Guest chirs3 Report post Posted July 14, 2002 Reign of Fire Starring: Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey (sp?), and some girl who, from the previews, I could have sworn was Vanessa Angel... but it wasn't. Story: In... 2008 I think, during an underground excavation project in London, a dormant species of dragons is awakened. And of course they're pissed off (otherwise there wouldn't be a movie), so they go tearassing around London, England, Europe, That Hemisphere, the other hemisphere... long story short, about the year 2020, the Earth is pretty much fucked over. Cut to Quin. He and a few hundred people are living in a run down castle type place, in post-apocalyptic Town-Near-London. A few of the citizens are getting restless and rebellious, and they end up paying for it when they sneak out of the community to take in the harvest early. They and their tomato crop get frizzied. Weep, weep. Suddenly, a bunch of tanks and trucks come a'strolling down to their front door. Out pops "the only thing worse than a dragon... an American." Van Zan, a self-proclaimed Dragon Slayer. Quin reluctantly allows them in, because they need shelter and rest for a while. In that while, a dragon attacks, and Van Zan's kick-assishness saves the day. But Quin isn't happy with their disruptive presence, and demands to know why they're here. And Van Zan reveals that he and his men are heading for London - through a lot of scientific guesstimation (nothing they have is proven fact), they presume that there is a single male, and a shite-load of females with whom he mates. Kill the male - kill the species. Let the hunt begin. Good: A hell of a lot, actually. I'm gonna put it in list form, because I like lists. 1) CGI Dragons = incredibly cool. 2) McConaughey = incredibly cool. 3) NO COMIC RELIEF! I can't count the number of action movies that have been chock full with attempted (and usually failed) comic relief. This movie just doesn't use any, and I loooooved it. 4) Another problem with many recent action movies is they were either too short, or they felt too short. This was about an hour and forty minutes, and it felt like the perfect length. 5) Action sequences = godly, especially the unfortunately too short skydiving scene. 6) Everything was really reall dark and grey and dingy and... well duh, I know it's post-apocalyptic, but it still looked cool. Bad: The list... part two! 1) A dozen plotholes, but duh, it's an action movie. Mostly forgiveable. 2) Occasionaly an overly-hokey scene. 3) I think it would have been better on a smaller scale - saving the whole world the way they did seemed a little off. 4) OVERLY LOUD in some spots, and mostly it's the music. If Van Zan's tank rolls by the camera, the music feels the need to be louder than it, and does so. Gets to be a bit much at times. Overall: Not quite the perfect summer movie, but as close as we'll ever get. This guy should keep doing action movies, because he seems to make them better than anyone else right now. chirs3 gives "Reign of Fire" eight and a half infinitely-fueled helicopters out of ten.
