Guest Jerome Drake Report post Posted July 15, 2002 NOTE: I'm no Maple Leafs fan, but I do respect Pat Quinn. He lead Canada to a Gold Medal. "Maple Leafs head coach/general manager Pat Quinn was fined $100,000 by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for his comments on recent free-agent signings around the league, the New York Post and TSN reported. Quinn last week bashed teams for shelling out big bucks this offseason, and predicted a lockout in 2004. "What's happened in this business? Where's the money coming from? When's it going to stop?'' Quinn said. "And then we come into a year like this where we get five-year contracts -- (at) $9 million (per year). There are ways to run a business and that's why there's going to be a lockout. Because we're not running the business well." Quinn was specifically outraged by the big free-agent contracts signed by Darius Kasparaitis, Bill Guerin and Bobby Holik. "What blew everyone away was the length of the contracts . . . we had no clue that was going to happen," Quinn said, "the fourth and fifth years were very, very scary." Kasparaitis signed for a six-year deal with the Rangers, while Holik (also with the free-spending Rangers) and Guerin (Stars) committed to five-year contracts. This is the second time in three months Quinn has been fined by the NHL. He was previously docked $30,000 for his criticism of referees following his team's first-round playoff series against the Islanders." FROM ESPN. Ok, fine the man for saying the damn fucking truth. This is bullshit. They are always fining Quinn because the man is speaking the damn truth. What are your opinions?
Guest chirs3 Report post Posted July 15, 2002 I know absolutely nothing about sports... ... but you can get fined just for saying your opinion? He was fined 100,000 for criticizing ridiculous contracts and predicting a lockout? Damn... Gary Bettman sucks.
Guest Jerome Drake Report post Posted July 15, 2002 Thats the NHL for ya, it costs ya 100,000 for stating your opinion.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted July 15, 2002 How dare they go and fine the best coach in NHL history. I ought to go out, find Gary Bettman, and kick his ass (as long as he doesn't try to hold my hand like he did to Ron MacLean).
Guest Jerome Drake Report post Posted July 15, 2002 Although, i like Pat Quinn, I wouldnt tall him the best coach in NHL history. Scotty Bowman is.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted July 15, 2002 Damn, players/coaches get fined for saying anything negative. Perhaps if Quinn got his wife/sibiling to say these things instead of him he'd be a bit heavier in the wallet right now...
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 16, 2002 How dare they go and fine the best coach in NHL history. Thats so funny, because he doesn't have a ring to back it up. He's not as good as Scotty Bowman, Punch Imlach, Toe Blake, Dick Irvin Sr.
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted July 16, 2002 The same thing would have happened in any other league. You can say your opinion, just not publicly. Look at Mark Cuban, he's been fined a couple million and I think he's only owned a team for 2 years.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted July 16, 2002 >How dare they go and fine the best coach in NHL history. I assume that's hyperbole on Treble Charged's part, because it's either Dick Irvin, Sr or Scotty Bowman. >Damn, players/coaches get fined for saying anything negative. Perhaps if Quinn got his wife/sibiling to say these things instead of him he'd be a bit heavier in the wallet right now... I'm shocked that Bettman's knee-jerk reaction wasn't to fine Brett Hull. He always seems to get fined for saying what's on his mind...

It's bullshit that someone can be fined for stating their opinion, but that's pro-sports for you. I think it's bullshit, I'm not only expected but also required to take any shit that someone wants to dump on me for doing my job, and take it with a smile. Pro sports leagues see it as damaging to the league's image to have insiders criticize it. Personally, I see it as damaging to the league to have a bunch of mindless drones spouting off "everything is fine, the league is in great shape" when it's so obvious that it's not. I'd rather have the occasional coach or player spout off about the state of the game, rather than having the commissioner make a sudden announcement of 28 out of 30 teams lost money last year. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 16, 2002 In baseball, the players union is allowed to view the real numbers, but can't comment on them publicly. As for the baseball owners, speaking out on labor matters is a $1 million fine. Selectively enforced of course.
