Guest El Hijo Del Lunatic Report post Posted July 16, 2002 So I was playing Major League Baseball for my NES (yes, the LJN 1988 version), and as I was putting my customary NL All-Star team together, I lined up Eric Davis third, Dale Murphy fourth, and Howard Johnson fifth. Which was odd, because I never play HoJo ... oh, wait, that's not why it was odd. I noticed that I had three 30-30 guys hitting back-to-back-to-back. Dale Murphy had his 30-30 season in 1983, when he hit 36 homers and stole 30 bases. Eric Davis stole FIFTY bases and hit 37 homers in 1987, and Howard Johnson pulled a thirty-thirty THREE times in five years (1987, 1989, and 1991). Obviously I didn't know dates and stuff off the top of my head - I did some checking. You know, you never hear about a guy pulling a 30-30 anymore. I don't know why that is; it's just as rare now as it was in the late 80's an early 90's. I don't think there've ever been more than 5 people to join the 30-30 club in the same year, though I really didn't go back ridiculously far ... but I dgireess. My point is this: does anybody know who made the 30-30 club lately? So here's the big trivia question: who are the last ten men to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season? I was thinking it might be a cool way to get some baseball talk going if people started taking guesses at this. Just whoever comes to mind off the top of your head. I'll give you two hints: The ten men all did it in the last five years, and two men did it twice in that span. Oh, I think I'll know if you cheat, because I was SHOCKED at a few of these names, especially the two guys who did it twice. So take a shot. Ten guys. I figure I could keep it going by telling you how many out of ten you got right, but not WHICH guys you got right. And at the very least, maybe we get some good general baseball talk going. LUNATIC - Pimpin' ho's and you know the rest.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Sweet, cause I was thinking of doing something like this too. OK I'll give it a shot. A-Rod had a 40-40 season in 98. Jeff Bagwell Barry Bonds Sammy Sosa Bobby Abreu Moises Alou Dante Bichette Ellis Burks Gary Sheffield Larry Walker Damn, it was harder than I thought. Mostly cause power hitters are really, really BIG nowdays and don't have the speed a guy like Eric Davis used to have.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Preston Wilson Jeff Bagwell Alex Rodriguez Bobby Abreu Barry Bonds Richard Hidalgo Sammy Sosa Darrin Erstad Jose Cruz, Jr. Vladimir Guerrero Alfonso Soriano (this year) This was tough.
Guest DrEvil Report post Posted July 16, 2002 1. Shawn Green (1st Toronto player ever) 2. Jose Cruz Jr. 3. Alex Rodriguez 4. Larry Walker 5. Jeff (Buff) Bagwell (shocked me for a 1st baseman) 6. Vladimir Guerrero 7. Barry Bonds 8. Raul Mondesi (I think with Toronto) 9. Dante Bichette 10. Ellis Burks (can't remember how long ago, but it shocked me because his career looked like it was over before pulling this off)
Guest El Hijo Del Lunatic Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Let's see: phoenixrising has got 5 of them, Vern's got 7, and DrEvil's got 8. Doing better than I thought you would be. A couple of guys that are on these lists DID join the 30-30 club, but they weren't one of the last ten men to do so. And if anyone wants to guess on who the guys who did it TWICE in the five years were, go right ahead.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Nomar Garciapara (i think)
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Vladimir Guerrero Bobby Abreu Jose Cruz Jr. Preston Wilson Jeff Bagwell Raul Mondesi Alex Rodriguez Shawn Green Larry Walker Barry Bonds Last five years, Bagwell and Mondesi have done it twice. Bonds has gone 30-30 FIVE times, in 97, 96, 95, 92 and 90.

Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 16, 2002 That's what happens when you select trivia that any idiot can check on baseball-reference.com in five minutes. :-D
Guest El Hijo Del Lunatic Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Well, way to be an idiot, then. Apparently you missed the point of this.
Guest Jerome Drake Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Shit i problay could of got 6 atleast. Anyway, next question.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 17, 2002 I thought the point was to get the correct answer. Sure ruins the idea of trivia I'm afraid.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted July 17, 2002 That's what happens when you select trivia that any idiot can check on baseball-reference.com in five minutes. :-D That site has saved me money buying baseball encyclopedias. Why spend $20 or more when I can just jump online and look it up?
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Anyway, I have a baseball trivia book so I'll pull some questions out of it. And I can think of some off the top of my head as well. I'll post the name along with the answers so if you want you can check it out. I'll post the answers tomorrow evening. Here we go... 1. What player has more than 3,000 hits but no batting crown, and has the most home runs for a player who has never won a home run crown outright (that is, he alone never led the league in homers)? 2. What pitchers have won Cy Youngs in the National League and the American League? 3. Name the only batting champion that was traded to the other league in the same year he won the batting title. 4. What starting infield unit holds the record for most seasons played together? 5. What team holds the record for most homers hit in a single season?
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 17, 2002 I'm gonna play along and not look up the answers....... 1. I can't remember if Eddie Murray had 3,000 hits. If he did, I think its him. 2. Pedro of course. I would think maybe Jim Bunning. Nolan Ryan? 3. Willie McGee. 1990, he played for the Cardinals, hit about .335, and was traded mid-year for Felix Jose. I'm a Cards fan, so I remember stuff like that. 4. Wow. Tough one. I'll take a stab and say the Dodgers infield of Garvey, Lopes, Wills and Cey. 5. Isn't it one of the late 90s Oriole teams? Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted July 17, 2002 I'll just agree with alkeiper. More Trivia Name the 8 players who have won 5 or more batting titles. Hint: 4 in each league. Name the 5 pitchers to league the league in Earned Run Average, with an ERA of over 3.00 3 in the N.L., 2 in A.L. The most recent was last year.

El Hijo Del Lunatic SEZ: I was thinking it might be a cool way to get some baseball talk going if people started taking guesses at this. You're right, that's not very clear. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 17, 2002 I was thinking it might be a cool way to get some baseball talk going if people started taking guesses at this. You're right, that's not very clear. That's right. You stated what you were thinking. It wasn't an implicet directive.
Guest El Hijo Del Lunatic Report post Posted July 18, 2002 That's "implicit". I-M-P-L-I-C-I-T. What, you can fuck around with semantics, but *I* can't point out spelling mistakes?
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 18, 2002 I never said you couldn't point out spelling mistakes, but I think blasting me for something that wasn't clear earlier is entirely different.
Guest Jerome Drake Report post Posted July 18, 2002 BOTH OF YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP. Who cares if alkeiper cheated. Move on!
Guest El Hijo Del Lunatic Report post Posted July 18, 2002 I thought it was clear. I mean, I did go on for a couple of paragraphs about the whole 30-30 thing. I mention that I was hoping to get some baseball talk going. I mention that I had to look this shit up because I didn't know it. I mention that I'd know if you cheated. I ask you to put down just "whoever comes to mind, off the top of your head". Besides, it's not clear that you shouldn't cheat? I mean, I recognize that most people here have opposable thumbs and COULD cheat, but since my point was the stat itself and not the question, I figured it was pretty clear that you shouldn't cheat. I guess I shouldn't have assumed you read the post before you responded, eh? BOTH OF YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP. Who cares if alkeiper cheated. Move on! He spoiled my fun from before. Gotta find a different way to do it now. LUNATIC - You know my steez.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted July 18, 2002 Ok, here are the answers. 1. Yup, it's Eddie Murray. 2. There have been three: Gaylord Perry (1972 w/ Cleveland, 1978 w/ San Diego. Pedro Martinez (1997 w/ Montreal, 1999 and 2000 with Boston) Randy Johnson (1995 w/ Seattle, 1999-2001 w/ Arizona) 3. Yup it's Willie McGee, in 1989. 4. So close Alkeiper. It was Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey. 5. 1996 Orioles (257)

Name the 5 pitchers to league the league in Earned Run Average, with an ERA of over 3.00 3 in the N.L., 2 in A.L. The most recent was last year. OK...good one by the way. American League - Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Rod Carew National League - Honus Wagner, Stan Musial, Bill Terry, Pete Rose As for pitchers... National - Dazzy Vance way back in the 20's. That one is tough...I'd like to see the answers.

Guest BillyBump Report post Posted July 19, 2002 My guess is that it would be Pete Rose, although I think that that is wrong.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 19, 2002 Nope, Rose won 3 batting titles, all for the Reds. He didn't join the Phillies until he was 38.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 19, 2002 Here's another trivia question. No one has ever gone 50/50 in a season, but two players have hit 50 home runs and stolen 50 bases in seperate years. Name them.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 20, 2002 Ken Griffey Jr? Micky Mantle? i'm really guessing.
