Guest phoenixrising Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 Neither of them. Unless you're DrTom, one of them will likely surprise you. Then I'm pretty sure the first player is Brady Anderson. I'd say Barry Bonds is the second guy. And I know the answer to Vern's question, but disqualify me cause I looked it up.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 Bingo. Bonds and Anderson are correct.
Guest DrTom Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 Damnit, I knew Bonds and Anderson, too. With Anderson being the very obscure choice, obviously. Too bad it's been answered already, but oh well. As for the double-duty batting title thing, I really don't know. It was probably before my time, and I don't want to cheat by going to look it up.
Guest phoenixrising Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 Well, until Vern posts the answer, I got another question. Who is the only player to hold the highest single-season batting average record for more than one team ?
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 Bill Madlock with Chicago and Pittsburgh.
Guest phoenixrising Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 See, this surprised me, cause you never hear Madlock's name come up when you speak of great hitters. Yet, the guy won four batting titles. My guess would be because he played on a horrible team (Chicago) and was overshadowed in Pittsburgh by Willie Stargell and Dave Parker.
Guest CanadianChris Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 Well, until Vern posts the answer, I got another question. Who is the only player to hold the highest single-season batting average record for more than one team ? I'd guess John Olerud.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 20, 2002 Report Posted July 20, 2002 That's correct. Here's an interesting one I ran across while checking around. 9 out of the 10 top single season batting averages in San Diego Padre history were set by Tony Gwynn. Who has the 10th one?
Guest CanadianChris Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 Let me just say, after looking up the answer, that NO ONE is going to get it by recollection alone.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 I will say that he is an active player.
Guest phoenixrising Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 Actually the answer I was angling for was Rogers Hornsby, who holds the single seasons batting marks for St. Louis (.424 in 1924), the Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (.387 in 1928), and the Cubs (.380 in 1929). I'm pretty sure Olerud has the highest single season batting average for Toronto, would have to check if he does for Seattle or the Mets.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 Olerud does indeed hold the single season batting record for both the Blue Jays and the Mets. Hornsby does hold the record for all 3 teams, provided you discount the stats of the 1800s. Gary Sheffield is correct. His .330 average in 1992 ranks 10th in Padre history, behind 9 different seasons of Tony Gwynn. Ok, lets try a few more trivia questions....... 1. Who held the single season home run title before Babe Ruth? 2. Who broke Walter Johnson's strikeout record in 1983? 3. Who held the all time hit record before Ty Cobb and Pete Rose? 4. Who was the last non-reliever to win a Cy Young award with less than 15 wins? 5. Most know that Wally Pipp was the Yankee 1st baseman before Lou Gehrig. But who replaced Gehrig?
Guest DrTom Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 Some of these are going to be pure guesses. 1. Frank "Home Run" Baker 2. Steve Carlton 3. Um... Tris Speaker? 4. Some Guy 5. Babe Dahlberg

Thanks for the info on Olerud and Hornsby. I remembered Sheffield, cause in 1992 he was on a Triple Crown pace, which was pretty rare at the time. As for your questions... 1. Ned Williamson had 27 back before the turn of the century. I think Ruth broke his record with 29 in his last year with the Red Sox, then hit 54 in his first season as a Yankee. 2. Steve Carlton 3. Willie Keeler 4. I have a feeling this happened during 1994...Greg Maddux? 5. Babe Dahlgren
Guest DrTom Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 Dahlgren, damnit, that's it. I knew it was Babe Dahl-something.
Guest King_TIL Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 1. Who were the last pitchers in each league to win the MVP? 2. Before Ichiro, who was the only rookie ever to win the MVP? 3. Can you name the five pitchers who have won 100 or more games in each league? 4. Name the six pitchers who played after WWII who threw 5,000 career innings. 5. What player had the highest single-season batting average, but failed to win the batting title? (hint: lost to Ty Cobb)

Guest phoenixrising Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 5. I think Shoeless Joe Jackson hit over .400 one year...and finished second to Cobb. First 30/30 player was...Willie Mays
Guest alkeiper Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 To wrap mine up..... 1. Ned Williamson is correct. 2. Steve Carlton is correct. 3. Cap Anson actually 4. Fernando Valenzuela, during the 1981 strike. 5. Babe Dahlgren is correct. As for the new questions, I don't see any reason to differ from Verne's answers on the 1st four, but 5. is Napoleon Lajoie, who lost the batting crwon to Ty Cobb on a hugely controversial race. Lajoie picked up 7 bunt hits on the final day when the St. Louis Browns manager ordered his 3rd baseman to play back just to spite Cobb.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 Ugh, misread the 5th question. Yeah, its Joe Jackson then.
Guest CanadianChris Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 For #3, I know one is Dennis Martinez. So I think there are actually 6.
Guest King_TIL Posted July 21, 2002 Report Posted July 21, 2002 1. Who were the last pitchers in each league to win the MVP? 2. Before Ichiro, who was the only rookie ever to win the MVP? 3. Cy Young, Jim Bunning, Gaylord Perry, Fergie Jenkins, Nolan Ryan, AND Dennis Martinez (sorry) 4. Phil Niekro, Nolan Ryan, Gaylord Perry, Don Sutton, Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton 5. Joe Jackson
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 22, 2002 Report Posted July 22, 2002 The first 30/30 man was Ken Williams in '22 You know both Greg Maddux in 1995 and Doc Gooden in 1985 should been the MVP. They had much better numbers than Barry Larkin and Willie McGee.
