What the hell is Gretzky talking about

Recommended Posts

Guest Vern Gagne

Did anyone see Gretzky's quote about the U.S. and other countries rooting against Canada's hockey team. Does he really not get that the people criticizing the Canadian hockey team are Canadians.

Wayne Bretzky is more like it. How long until we hear "Gretzky screwed Gretzky"?

Im not quite sure how you can say Canadians are the ones criticizing Team Canada?  Canadians are very loyal hockey fans.  And Gretzky's point is very good.  In Nagano, not much was mentioned when Canada went 4-0 before losing in that shootout to the Czechs.  NBC didn't talk a whole lot about it, they talked more about Team USA's failures.  I didn't know Canada was 4-0 before that loss until last night.  But now, Canada is underachieving greatly, and thats all we hear about it.  Its crap, and I hope the Canadians shove it in everyone's face.

I just hope that the Canadians were playing possum in the round robin, getting everyone to take them lightly.

BTW, Gretzky's speech was one of the coolest things I've ever heard.  I'm sick of American Propoganda, too!

Why would another country be rooting for Canada?

Wouldn't they be rooting for there own country?

Gretzky is paranoid because he's afraid that Team Canada will see an early ejection from the olympics.

Teemu Selanne actually admitted that the Euro teams are gunning for the Canadians.

And for the record, Gretzky was aiming the venom at Jim Lampley, who I suppose was mocking the Canadian hockey team.  I guess criticism is okay, but mocking is verboten.

And this is why the covers of Time, Newsweek, and practically every newspaper in the country in the past week have prominently featured Sale & Pelletier?

I don't care the chick is hot.

Gee let's see...an olympic conspiracy covered on US magazines...while the olympics are in the US...

hmmm...

this is a tough one.

Trust me I live in Buffalo (roughly a stone's throw from Canada)...Canada is only used for 4 things in the US:

1.  Strip Clubs

2.  Casinos

3.  Beer

4.  Punchlines

Canada is sick and tired of being America's baby brother but know What? Canada brought it on themselfs...Toughen up and stop being sissies and crying when you lose a Hockey team...why don't Canada create their own Hockey leauge so they won't be humilated each year. Seriously, two years ago DALLAS TEXAS won the Cup...What does that say about Hockey when the native country who created that sport getting laid out by a city almost in Mexico.

See that's why America is smart with it's Football and Baseball teams...We don't let Toronto and Calgary have NFL teams A). Shitty Canadian Exchange rate. B). No Major cities outside of Toronto. C.) No crediblity.

Canada and it's ring leader need to shut up, you're not proving anything to anyone by bitching about it, You wanna end the snickering? FUCKING WIN the God Damn thing and then maybe people will notice.

First of all, why should we make our own league?  We started the league, it was run by us up until a few years ago, and most of the American teams don't have a following.  Does anyone in Atlanta give a shit about the Thrashers?  Also, if we do make a new league, the Stanley Cup comes with us, it was donated by a Canadian, so we keep it.

Lets look at the history of Canadian teams in the NHL:

-Toronto, Montreal (original members)

-Vancouver (expansion team when exchange rate was better)

-Quebec, Edmonton, Winnipeg (teams absorbed by league after WHA folds.  Exchange rate is better, plus the teams are the only ones [plus Hartford] who had any fan following.

-Calgary (team relocates from Atlanta [who doesn't care about any pro sports IMO], when exchange rate was more favourable

-Ottawa (league comes back to city after 60+ years without team, exchange rate not as favourable as it was before, but still better than it is now)

All I have to say is that those damn shootouts have done us in in the last 2 Olympics.  We could have possible won 2 Golds in a row, but we didn't.  We needed Gretzky's comments to wake us up.

1. Given the power of the "morailty police" in the US that's not a bad thing.

2. Casino Windsor lost a lot of gamblers when the three casinos in Detroit opened.  I suppose that after you factor in the no taxes on winnings and exchange rate, it works out the same.  And you'll still reek of cigarettes when you leave.

3. The funny part about this is that we actually export the shitty beer (Canadian, Blue) to the US.  We keep the good stuff to ourselves.

4. Buffalonians only feel that way because they're the BUTT of jokes across North America.  Most Americans don't know enough about Canada to joke about us.

I have nothing against Canada, but one export I wish you'd take back is Tom Green.

You can take back back Bryan Adams and that bitch Anne Murray too.

Hey I love Canada.

I go up a couple times a month.

I made my girlfriend go to Toronto for a couple Blue Jays games for our anniversary.

That being said...I don't take them seriously as a country.

That's a direct result of being raised so close to it.

Bryan lives in England.  They can have him.  And you think Anne Murray is a bitch?  I was in the same school as her daughter for a couple of years.  Now SHE was a stuck-up little bitch.

I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad for her :)
