Guest HollyandTestMark Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Where the hell did she come from? I'd never heard of her up until, like, a month ago, and now she's everywhere. Also, aside from the trademark HIDEOUSLY OVERPLAYED MTV SINGLE OF DOOM~! she has out now, does she have any talent?
Guest chirs3 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 I've never heard her or heard of her... but someone on the boards has a picture of her in their sig, and it looks like she wants to kill me...
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Yes. At least in my opinion as I love her CD. Most people will say no...she's pop..blah blah blah. But I know pop music...and this ain't it. She writes her own lyrics...plays guitar...that alone puts her above the pop crowd. Plus...I think the album (with the exception of about 2 songs) is terrific. But my musical tastes are odd.
Guest Kinetic Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 I've only heard the one song and it didn't do anything for me. There seem to be an awful lot of these 18 year old singer/songwriters cropping up all of the sudden, so I think it's time to dispel the rumor that the ability to write a song makes you talented. It doesn't. Anyone can write a bad song that, with the proper marketing and Hot Topic wardrobe, can become a big hit single. Really. Am I the only one who's seen "Josie and the Pussycats" around here?
Guest Vyce Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Yep, she's Canadian. And her music's catchy. And she's hot as HELL. That's all you really need to know, right? Just do like we do, and listen to her music while you slowly masturbate. Or maybe that's just my preference. I love Michelle Branch more, but I'm becoming a fan of Lavigne.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 HAving heard the album several times...it's time to dispell the rumor that Avril is one of those untalented people. Notice I didn't say that doing those things makes you talented in my previous post...I said that it makes you better than the pop stars.
Guest chirs3 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 She still looks like she wants to kill me. Can't you find a more user-friendly pic?
Guest KingOfOldSchool Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 I've only heard that one song on MTV, I didn't like it. And I can't be bothered to search for some mp3s of what I assume would be her better songs. But speaking from a guy's point of view, IMO, she's pretty damn hot; which is just enough for me to sit through her video/s.
Guest chirs3 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Can't tell if you're joking, so I'll just say you don't have to find a new one. Seriously, though, she looks pissed off, psychotic slightly. Anywho, I've got Kazaa fired up - someone recommend some songs of hers.
Guest Kinetic Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 She writes her own lyrics...plays guitar...that alone puts her above the pop crowd. You're right. You didn't say she was talented. My point is that the ability to play a guitar and write some trite lyrics does not neccesarily make you any better than, say, Britney Spears. At least she has the decency to be forthcoming about her vacuousness. But, then, I haven't heard the album.
Guest Flyboy Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Anywho, I've got Kazaa fired up - someone recommend some songs of hers. Damnit, I was just about to ask that! So bps.. recommend some songs of hers that you like. Odd taste? You like GNR, you're good in my book. And, BAH GAWD~!, I find "Complicated" a very.. erm.... catchy song.
Guest TheDames7 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Just for the record, I think she's cute, but DAMN she's got some sharp teeth and wears some dark ass eye make up to make her look EEEEVIL~! Dames
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Alright...without the cd case in my hand (it's in the car) I can tell you that track #6 is my friends favorite (and he really doesn't like her much...but he admits the potential is there) I personally like #8 (after the first line...which is horrible) and #9 (even though it is sappy...screw you...well..if you laughed at me anyway) As for the names of these songs to help you out... lessee.. #8 is "Ordinary"...something or other...but the word ordinary is in the title #9 is "Things I'll never say" CAn't remember the name to #6 for the life of me...
Guest Flyboy Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Track listings: 1. Losing Grip 2. Complicated 3. Sk8er Boi 4. I'm With You 5. Mobile 6. Unwanted 7. Tomorrow 8. Anything But Ordinary 9. Things I'll Never Say 10. My World 11. Nobody's Fool 12. Too Much To Ask 13. Naked 14. Complicated (The Matrix Mix) (Bonus Track) C'mon bps.. use the resources! *points to amazon.com*
Guest chirs3 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 "Anything but Ordinary". Not quite my cup of tea, nor is the other. To each his own, I suppose. ... would it kill her to smile? *ducks bps21's clothesline attempt and runs away*
Guest Kinetic Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Intrigued by this thread, I decided to go look up some Avril Lavigne lyrics. After spelling her last name incorrectly and coming across a bunch of mildy entertaining web journals, I hit paydirt. Here, ladies and gentlemen, are the lyrics to "Naked": I wake up in the morning Put on my face The one that's gonna get me Through another day Doesn't really matter How I feel inside 'Cause life is like a game sometimes But then you came around me The walls just disappeared Nothing to surround me And keep me from my fears I'm unprotected See how I've opened up Oh, you've made me trust Because I've nver felt like this before I'm naked Around you Does it show? You see right through me And I can't hide I'm naked Around you And it feels so right I'm tyring to remember Why I was afraid To be myself and let the Covers fall away I guess I never had someone like you To help me, to help me fit In my skin I never felt like this before I'm naked Around you Does it show? You see right through me And I can't hide I'm naked Around you And it feels so right I'm naked Oh oh yeah Does it show? Yeah, I'm naked Oh oh, yeah yeah I'm so naked around you And I can't hide You're gonna see right through, baby I take it all back.
Guest red_file Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Not to quibble about this too much, but she didn't write any of the songs on the album. She co-wrote them. Granted, she did have a hand in crafting the songs, but I would certainly question how much of the songs is hers and how much is from the pen of the professional songwriter. But whether or not she actually writes the songs has nothing to do with whether or not they're any good. I tend to like her stuff. I'd have to disagree slightly with bps21 and say that her music is most assuredly pop. Most of the songs are light and have good hooks and are generally pleasant to listen to.
Guest Flyboy Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Whoa... she reminds me of Alanis SORT OF.. so therefore... she's okay in my book.
Guest Kinetic Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Oh, man. This one's my favorite. "Sk8tr Boi" He was a boy She was a girl Can i make it any more obvious He was a punk She did ballet What more can i say He wanted her She'd never tell secretly she wanted him as well But all of her friends Stuck up their nose They had a problem with his baggy clothes He was a skater boy She said see you later boy He wasn't good enough for her She had a pretty face But her head was up in space She needed to come back down to earth 5 years from now She sits at home Feeding the baby she's all alone She turns on tv Guess who she sees Skater boy rockin up MTV She calls up her friends They already know And they've all got Tickets to see his show She tags along Stands in the crowd Looks up at the man that she turned down He was a skater boy She said see you later boy He wasn't good enough for her Now he's a super star Slamming on his guitar Does your pretty face see what he's worth? He was a skater boy She said see you later boy He wasn't good enough for her Now he's a super star Slamming on his guitar Does your pretty face see what he's worth? Sorry girl but you missed out Well tough luck that boy's mine now We are more than just good friends This is how the story ends Too bad that you couldn't see, See the man that boy could be There is more that meets the eye I see the soul that is inside He's just a boy And Im just a girl Can I make it any more obvious We are in love Haven't you heard How we rock eachothers world I'm with the skater boy I said see you later boy I'll be back stage after the show I'll be at the studio Singing the song we wrote About a girl you used to know I'm with the skater boy I said see you later boy I'll be back stage after the show I'll be at the studio Singing the song we wrote About a girl you used to know
Guest thefrenchargel Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Fuck smiling and looking all nice and shit, she looks HOT in that picture. Her music sucks though.
Guest starvenger Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 I've only heard the one song and it didn't do anything for me. I saw it, and I know what you're talking about. She's probably not the next DeJour, though, if that's what you're implying. You should probably all know by now that once an artist gets hot (i.e. Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys, That Slut Britney, even the Beatles), a bunch of other similar-talent artists get fast tracked to take advantage of the craze. So what's so different about Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton et al getting their shots at stardom?
Guest Zack Malibu Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Having seen Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton all in concert about a month and a half ago, I can tell you that Avril and Michelle Branch obviously have staying power, but Vanessa Carlton, unless she has a GREAT second album, will most likely be remembered for that one song. Everything else she did stunk IMO. (and I didn't mind her song before I heard it 18 times in a 2 hour span).
Guest Incandenza Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Assuming she's still making music in a couple of years, I wonder if Lavigne will look back on this time and cringe in embrassment over her hopelessly shallow lyrics.
Guest chirs3 Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 Well, at least she doesn't look like she wants to stab me anymore. Thanks bps.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Posted July 17, 2002 Report Posted July 17, 2002 I personally enjoy the stabber chick look. Although I don't really see it in Avril, she's a bit too cute for it all. I don't necessarily mean cute in the "I wanna stick a plunger inside of her" way either, I mean the cute in the "Awwww! She's only 12!" way. But yes, i'd still do her. WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS ABOUT THE MUSIC?! Feh!
Guest chirs3 Posted July 18, 2002 Report Posted July 18, 2002 Well, you missed bps21's old picture. She wanted to kill me, I swear!
Guest treble charged Posted July 18, 2002 Report Posted July 18, 2002 I like her new single "Losing Grip". That, along with "Complicated" (which I also like) and "Sk8r Boi" (which I don't like) are the only songs of her's that I've heard. And she's from Napanee, Ontario, which is about 1 1/2 hours from where I live, which means stations from around here play the fuck out of her. Anyone who thinks that she is hot (myself included) would be wise to search for the video of her performance from the MuchMusic Video Awards, where her ass makes an appearance.
