Guest Stuart Report post Posted July 17, 2002 All Japan ran it's big Osaka Prefectural Budokan tour climax today. The undercard was very uneventful, with the only real notable happening being Ka Shin's second defense of the AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Title. Ka Shin said that he and Hayashi agreed in Mexico that Kaz will be the next challenger, which is probably the biggest chance of a title change at this point. The AJPW World Tag Team Title hit an all-time low when Brian Adams & Bryan Clark, AKA Kronik, defeated Muto & Kea to win the belts, Clark pinning Muto. The show finished on a high note for workrate though, with Tenryu successfully defending the Triple Crown, defeating Satoshi Kojima for the second straight time. Sounded like a great match, with lots of big moves like a plancha from Kojima and full nelson suplex from Tenryu. Tenryu kicked out of Kojima's new Western lariat, before hitting a powerbomb for the win. Nothing else on the show sounded good. The show didn't sell out, drawing 5,400 (200 more than New Japan on 6/7) in the 6,700 or so seat building. AJPW, 7/17/02 (PPV/GAORA TV) Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium 5,400 Fans 1. Masanobu Fuchi & Kazushi Miyamoto beat Shigeo Okumura & Hideki Hosaka (6:40) when Fuchi used an inside cradle on Hosaka. 2. George Hines, Kaz Hayashi & Jimmy Yang beat Johnny Smith, Ryuji Hijikata & Gran Naniwa (11:26) when Hayashi used the Final Cut on Naniwa. 3. Steve Williams, Mike Rotundo & Yuto Aijima beat Arashi, Nobutaka Araya & Nobukazu Hirai (7:05) when Williams used a homicidal backdrop driver on Araya. 4. AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Title: Kendo Ka Shin © beat Gran Hamada (11:38) with a cross armbreaker (2nd defense). 5. 30th Anniversary Special Match in Osaka: Mil Mascaras & Dos Caras beat Abdullah The Butcher & Yoji Anjo (8:20) when Mascaras used a diving body attack on Anjo. 6. Mike Barton & Jim Steele beat Mitsuya Nagai & Tomoaki Honma (5:52) when Steele used the Turbo Drop II on Honma. 7. AJPW World Tag Team Title: Brian Adams & Bryan Clark beat Keiji Muto & Taiyo Kea © (14:59) when Clark used a modified avalanche hold on Muto to become the 46th champions. 8. Triple Crown: Genichiro Tenryu © beat Satoshi Kojima (28:55) with a powerbomb (1st defense). --- - Chono is auctioning off Silva vs. Singh to other promotions. He put a minimum price tag of 4,600,000 yen (close to US$40,000) on the match, and possibilities for it's host include K-1's 8/28 National Stadium and UFO's 8/8 Tokyo Dome shows. Chono's logic behind the price was their size times the two of them, so 230 x 2 x 10,000 yen = 4,600,000. - During the IWGP Jr. Title match signing ceremony, Koji Kanemoto promised to become a priest if he doesn't win the belt from Minoru Tanaka. - Returning from some special training, Tadao Yasuda laughed and remarked at how easily he'll beat President Tatsumi Fujinami in Sapporo on 7/19. - New Japan head scout, Kengo Kimura, sent a love-call to national judo star, Hidehiko Yoshida, who is going to compete on the big MMA 8/28 National Stadium show. Yoshida was quite open to the idea of entering New Japan for some matches, saying he's a big fan of Yuji Nagata and Manabu Nakanishi, both former amateur stars, and would like to face either one. - Yoshihiro Takayama, after his upset six man tag loss on yesterday's NOAH show, has challenged Yoshinari Ogawa (should he beat Rikio) to a GHC Heavyweight Title match. If it happens, it'll probably be on NOAH's next tour, which takes place after New Japan's G1 Climax (so no chance of Takayama entering the tournament as champion). - Naoya Ogawa's opponent on UFO's 8/8 Tokyo Dome show will be one of Alexander Karelin's rivals, Matt Gaffari. Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Unless Chono is booking like Mutoh, bet on a new IWGP Jr Champion on 7/19, NJ doesn't need the Reverend Koji.
Guest BigTim2002 Report post Posted July 17, 2002 YEah.........um, KRONIK? Whoa...Keiji, watch the Kronik vs. UT/Kane match boy...you have to be fucking kidding me. Kea n Mutoh hold the belts for almost a year and they job them to...FUCKING KRONIK?
Guest PlatypusFool Report post Posted July 17, 2002 I'm slightly angered by Tenryu kicking out of the Kojima's newly westernised lariat. There was lots of build for the power of this 'new' move and the first time Kojima hit it, someone kicked out of it. Why? What does this do to help anyone? If Tenryu was booked to win the match then show him to be desperate to avoid the 'new' lariat. If he's desperate to avoid the lariat then it keeps the finisher strong without anyone losing anything. Guest The Son of Sting Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Here is what Meltzer said about the main events ------ *Kronic b Keiji Muto & Taiyo Kea to win the Double tag titles with the high times on Muto. Okay, as hideous as Kronic is, give Muto credit for understanding how to make new stars instead of how WWE doesn't do it *Genichiro Tenryu b Satoshi Kojima to keep Triple Crown. We got several reports on this show and people raved about this match and how incredible Tenryu looked (Kojima is really one of the best) overall a good show. ------
Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted July 18, 2002 I thought Kanemoto said he was going to shave his head if he didn't win against Tanaka.
Guest Stuart Report post Posted July 18, 2002 I thought Kanemoto said he was going to shave his head if he didn't win against Tanaka. That's what he means about becoming a priest. They shave their heads in Japan. He probably doesn't literally mean he'll become a priest, but will make himself look like one via head-shaving.
Guest Your Olympic Hero Report post Posted July 18, 2002 Ahahaa just like I posted in the NJPW results thread, where Rick Steiner main evented... Puro is becoming just as bad off as North America, now that Kronik are the tag champs. Think of the people who have held those belts: Kawada, Misawa, Kobashi, Taue, Muto, and... Adam Bomb? LOL
Guest deadbeater Report post Posted July 18, 2002 Kronik? Kronik going over in Japan?? Now I know wrestling has hit a lull.
Guest Stuart Report post Posted July 19, 2002 There is no real defense for the Kronik debacle, but there are for the Steiner thing. The Steiners still have some big name power in Japan. Their segment on the 5/2 Tokyo Dome show drew something like an 11.2 rating, showing that they still draw as a unit. Since Scott isn't healthy enough to work tours, Rick is being built up for the match later on today. Rick has been on a winning streak and pinned Tenzan yesterday. This more than likely means he and Scott will lose to Chono and Tenzan, as they (or Rick at least, Scott on 5/2 though) have been logically built up to job to Chono and Tenzan, thus pushing the native tag unit. It's logic and Chono books with logic, unlike his crackhead buddy Muto, which is why you won't see the Steiners win the belts later on (if they do, I'll publically admit I was wrong, right here on TheSmarks forum). Guest NoSelfWorth Report post Posted July 20, 2002 Kronik suck. Why not drop the tag belts to a native team ?
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted July 20, 2002 Kronik suck. Why not drop the tag belts to a native team ? Mutoh wants to get over in America, or so it seems. However, what native team is there to drop them to? This is also a product of Mutoh's crack-head booking, but pretty much everyone has been turned into either a clone of the top guys, part of the War contingent, or is a foreigner and treated accordingly. I guess he's trying to make new stars. Fuck, at least the Varsity Club has their reputation going for them.
