Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted July 17, 2002 How about Christy Matthewson in place of Spahn? (Quick comparison)More wins than Spahn (and higher winning %), lower ERA, 81 fewer K's (in 4 fewer seasons). Went 5-5 in the WS w/ a 1.06 ERA. Plus, he was in the 1st HOF class. Matthewson's stats Spahn's stats
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 17, 2002 C -Johnny Bench 1B-Lou Gehrig 2B-Joe Morgan SS-Honus Wagner 3B-Mike Schmidt LF-Ted Williams CF-Willie Mays RF-Babe Ruth SP-Lefty Grove SP-Walter Johnson SP-Warren Spahn SP-Grover Alexander Closer-Sandy Koufax Spiff, I would note that Mathewson played in a much better era for pitchers. Otherwise, its very close.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Fair enough, but what about Steve Carlton? 2nd only to Spahn for wins by a lefty, and has the 2nd highest K total all-time. And *4* Cy Young Awards.

Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Warren Spahn was 35 when the Cy Young award was instituted. Had they given the Cy Young in his prime, he surely would've won more than his share.

Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted July 18, 2002 I'm going to have to think a bit more about this one. The out field is loaded, but I'm surprised no one has included Barry Bonds. At least in my opinion he's one of the top 5-10 players ever.
