Guest EricMM Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Because originally it was founded so that if the people decided the government was rebellion-worthy they could rebel right? Like we did to King of England. But IMO right now if we dicided that Bush, Congress, and The Supreme Court were corrupt, we couldn't oust them because the Army is too powerful. I mean we can be the minutemen all we want but our arms will no longer match the govt.'s... I'm not even saying it's a good or bad amendment, but it's useless! Guest ScorpionDanceofDeath Report post Posted July 17, 2002 It's useless in that sense, yes. But in the sense that we have the right to bear arms for personal protection, it's quite handy. Though too many people use it for wrong-doing.. This is a sick world we live in.

Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted July 18, 2002 I am not one to tell someone they can't own a gun, but the FACT of the matter is the 2nd amendment was created when the USA was still under heavy fear of being invaded by England in order to conquer the land, thus you had the right to protect your home from invaders. 2nd amendment wasn't made up so the NRA could go around talking about how great it is to tree mountain lions and shoot them up until the bleed to death and fall out of the tree for sheer amusement. I honestly have no problem with people who hunt for the sake of food, hell I had elk meat and it was damn good, I would eat it again in a second, yet I would never, and I mean NEVER, shoot a dear for the sake of hanging a pair of antlers on my mantle piece, and call myself a bigger man for it. Guest red_file Report post Posted July 18, 2002 It's always struck me as strange that the 2nd amendment was meant to give the citizens a means to protect themselves from a government that could become tyrannical, but when a group of citizens who believe the government to have become tyrannical start stockpiling guns and making plans to depose the current administration they're viewed as anarchists. Which is not to say that I sympathize with those types of people, just that it doesn't quite seem in keeping with the spirit of the document.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted July 18, 2002 "... but when a group of citizens who believe the government to have become tyrannical start stockpiling guns and making plans to depose the current administration they're viewed as anarchists." I don't view folks in the militia movement as anarchists; I view them as irrational, delusional cretins. I've had the displeasure of discussing things with people like this before. They distrust the government (which isn't a bad thing in and of itself), but they do so to such a ridiculous degree that anything the government does is part of some Grand Conspiracy to kill all its citizens and take away their property. The group I talked to claimed America perpetrated the 9/11 attacks on itself (and they had "proof," of course), then perpetrated the Anthrax scare to keep people quiet about 9/11. Anyone who disagreed with them was generally referred to as a Nazi and shouted down with farcical assumptions and gross misrepresentations of fact. People like that are just plain stupid, and they frustrate me enough to make me wish you had to pass an intelligence test to do anything of consequence in this country. Guest red_file Report post Posted July 19, 2002 People like that are just plain stupid, and they frustrate me enough to make me wish you had to pass an intelligence test to do anything of consequence in this country. I couldn't agree more. While I disagree with a lot of the pathos of Huxley's Brave New World, I think his idea of a society run solely by the intelligent few while the unitelligent masses are kept fat, dump, happy and voiceless is a sound one. One thing that's always astounded me about our government is how often people with intelligence are treated as second-class citizens in favour of a teeming mass of ignorant savages who happen to scream the loudest.
