Guest mesepher Posted July 24, 2002 Report Posted July 24, 2002 Classic rock radio has killed a lot of bands for me like. Prime examples include Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Pink Floyd. I respect the accomplishments of each of these bands, but if their catalogues were to be forever banished from Earth I probably wouldn't protest much. and everyone knows the entire Pink Floyd catologue has been played on the radio. most people don't even know who Roger Barrett is.... the greatest works of music aren't found on a radio.
Guest Dmann2000 Posted July 24, 2002 Report Posted July 24, 2002 Hmmm, Interesting no one mentioned The Eagles until midway. I'm telling you, if that Greatest Hits album had been a single album from those guys it could easily be called one of the greatest records ever. Unlike some greatest hits albums, every one of those songs is great. Give me "Take it to the Limit" or "One of These Nights" any day, I grew up on that music.
Guest Dmann2000 Posted July 24, 2002 Report Posted July 24, 2002 Dude, either you mixed up Roger Waters and Syd Barret, or you knew Syd's real name was Roger, or you didn't know and deliberately mixed their names up to make a point.
Guest thefrenchargel Posted July 24, 2002 Report Posted July 24, 2002 I've got one of Syd's solo albums The Madcap Laughs on vinyl...that's a weird motherfucker.

Guest FeArHaVoC Posted July 24, 2002 Report Posted July 24, 2002 I think, if you're looking at Music and success as a whole, then No other American Rock Band can touch Aerosmith.
Guest Alice_In_Chains_Chick Posted July 27, 2002 Report Posted July 27, 2002 Metallica or Alice in Chains
Guest nl5xsk1 Posted August 2, 2002 Report Posted August 2, 2002 the second way is by influence. What American band has had the most influence on music today? I don't mean to you personally, I mean on a bigger world scale. At The Drive-In is my favorite band ever and has had more influence on me than any other band, but does that mean it had that same influence on the rest of the world and made an impact? Of course not. The greatest American band had to have a huge impact on the world with their music that is still felt today. I can't think of any band that qualifies for this title right now, but I'm sure at least one existed or still exists. I think the most influential band would have to be the MC5 ... the were playing what became known as metal (and punk and hardcore) back in the 60s and 70s, back when everyone else was playing psychadelia. If you listen to Kick Out the Jams, it seems like it's 20 years ahead of schedule.
Guest Celtic Jobber Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 Definitely NIRVANA. One of the few bands that doesn't suck. B)
Guest saturnmark4life Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 i dunno about greatest ever, but my FAVOURITES are melvins tool butthole surfers NOFX ANDREW WK~! 70'S KISS pixies but i don't consider them to be the 'best' as such. Well, tool, melvins and pixies are up there.
Guest snuffbox Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 Right now Aerosmith is probably the greatest American band, based on their 25+ year catalog. Nirvana is probably the primary competition at the top, but unfortunately they will never be able to add new songs to their legacy. Smashing Pumpkins and Janes Addiction definitly had the opportunity to become the greatest american band but a breakup and inactivity respectively have shut them down. One band that is certainly nearing the top is Stone Temple Pilots. Their early cds are all very good and their latest, Shangri La De Da, was maybe their best effort yet, despite its lackluster sales and radioplay. If the next cd churns out a couple more hits and they continue to stay active on the road and in the studio I think Stone Temple Pilots could be Americas greatest band ever within the next 5 years.
