Who IS the greatest technichal wrestler

Of course we all know that Chris Benoit's heel persona claimed to be the greatest technical wrestler of all time when he challenged the rock, but who is, in your opinion the greatest technical wrestler of all time.

Thesz and Brisco are going to be near the top of any all time list.

 

For the 80s i will go with Flair or Steamboat and for 90s its between Bret,Owen,Benoit and Malenko.

For the last 15 years...Bret Hart, no doubt...beyond that, it's all about Malenko and Benoit. Nobody really comes close to Bret though...except for MAYBE Owen...I've seen all the great matches they've put on...and it's really scary to see how much they are really alike.

What is "technical wrestling"? The problem is, a lot of people have different definitions of it. Some say it's strict mat/submission based stuff ala Malenko, others go for the suplex/reversals/submission based stuff ala Benoit.

 

Me, I'd go for Malenko. The guy is a wizard on that mat, invented lots of submissions and can counter basically any hold.

1990's: Bret Hart, Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, Owen Hart, Steve Austin (before Attitude)

 

2000's: Kurt Angle

 

I'm sure there are more I can think of, but as of right now, these guys I've named have put on brilliant technical matches, despite some of the wrestlers also being in the "Brawl brawl brawl" Attitude era.

For the modern era, Dean Malenko blows away everyone, including the Harts, Benoit, Flair, and Angle. His skill with holds and reversals is unmatched on this continent. He's the best since Bob Backlund, and that covers a lot of ground.

I always saw Dean Malenko as the most pure technical wrestler, but Benoit as the best combination of power and technical prowess. I didn't see enough of Brett Hart to make a judgement.

i don't see this...i know kawada's one of (if not THE) greatest wrestlers in the world, but that's mostly through his selling and ability to tell a story. what i've seen of 90s AJPW style relies a lot on striking moves and fighting out of/over power moves. not a lot of chain wrestling, submissions, reversals, anything like that.

 

although i've never seen thesz wrestle, my vote goes to flair & steamboat. bret would get it, but his selling of submission holds hurts him. he always did the standard wwf-style selling of rest holds, which is to just lie there and act hurt. not only did flair & steamboat act hurt, they also looked like they were struggling to get out of the hold or find a way to slip out of/reverse the hold. just seems more technically pure to me.

Kiyoshi Tamura and Volk Han. There aren't anybody close. I remember reading the Observer in 1998 when Tamura was at his peak, and Meltzer said that he makes Dean Malenko look like Jim Duggan on the mat. So there.

 

Honorable mention goes to the Arsion True Heart herself, Mariko Yoshida (in 1999 anyway). The best female mat wrestler I've ever seen.

Yeah, but Tamura's and Han's matches are so close to being shoots that I'm not sure if they count or not. If you want to bring foreign names into it, hell, half the T2P roster smokes everyone in America.

Hogan does display tech (small package, drop kick, Inziguri(!!), a variety of suplexes), but the WWF style won't let him bust out those moves all the time.

Well, Hogan DID do those up to about ten years ago, mostly in Japan, but he's so degenerated now that I don't think he can do most of those any more.
