What is the Brass Knuckles title?

While reading about wrestling in the 60's and 70's, I've come across several titles called the Brass Knuckles (or Knux) title in serveral different territories.  I assume that this was some early predecessor to Hardcore titles, but I'm not sure.  Could someone give me a definative answer?

I'm pretty sure it was just another word for a lower title.

 

FMW used it...and ICW in Detroit used it...I'm pretty sure it wasn't a gimmick belt, just another belt with a cooler name.

 

And where did you find the clip of JYD gettin down?

That cartoon with JYD dancing around is priceless.I think it is kind of weird naming a belt the Brass Knuckles Title, thats like naming a belt the Steel Chair Title,kind of weird.

I *think* that at least some of the Brass Knuckles Titles were gimmick belts.  On wrestlingobserver.com today, there was a recap of a Detroit show from 1976, here is Brass Knuckles Title defense:

 

3. The Brute (w/ Sir Dudley Clemens) defeats Hank "Money Man" James by knockout to retain the Brass Knuckles title.

 

Decent brawl. James outfit is made for color TV (outrageous floral pattern). Brute is an ugly bald man, in the mold of George "The Animal" Steele. Brute finally KO's James with a chair for a ten-count to win the match. Bobo Brazil then comes in for the save.

 

That leads me to believe that it had rules similar to the Texas Deathmatch.

 

There was also a Brass Knuckles title in Texas from 53-87 (Title History) and as far as I can tell, it was mostly held by brawlers such as Bruiser Brody and Johnny Valentine.

World Class had a Brass Knuckles title at least briefly because I have a match with Terry Gordy defending the title against Kerry.

Was there any rule changes that would make the name Brass Knuckles title make any sense?
