Favorite Movie Ending Sequence/Shot.....

Word. I'd classify the ending sequence as the last 5 or so minutes of the movie, unless it's a long-ass action sequence.

 

Mine would definetly have to be the final 5 minutes of Heat. *SPOILERS AHEAD*. It involves the frantic chase by Pacino and Deniro trying to get the fuck out of dodge. The standoff occurs and Pacino does what he has to do. We then get the closing line by Deniro that sums up his entire feelings about the justice system: "Told ya I'm never goin' back." Pacino, instead of being a dick, comforts Deniro in the closing seconds of his life by extend his hand and holding Bobby D's hand as he makes his journey to meet St.Peter and the pearly gates. Then comes the sounds of "God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters" by Moby and see Pacino standing against the backdrop of LAX. Beautiful, beautiful shit.

 

Honourable mention goes to the final 5 minutes of Last of The Mohicans, Vanilla Sky and Braveheart.

lost highway: bill pullman presses the buzzer to tell himself that dick laurent is dead, and is chased by the cops into the night. he starts to transform in the car, but before we see the result of it, lynch cuts to the same shot and sound at the beginning of the movie: an empty road, accompanied by 'i'm deranged'.

 

taxi driver: de niro is driving his cab; he spots his own face in the rear view mirror, the musical score suddenly comes up loud, & he quickly adjusts the mirror away, as if he's afraid of seeing himself.

 

waking life: wiley wiggins just floats away.

 

the godfather: the door closing on diane keaton.

 

the blair witch project: michael is shown standing in a corner, and the camera drops.

 

the godfather part II: the flashback of the family (sans vito) at the table (with at least 3 people who are dead now, 2 because of michael), then the close-up of al pacino: forever regretting what he's done, yet unwilling to change.

I think an ending that doesn't get enough justice is the ending of Unbreakable. I found it cool that M.Night chose not to make Samuel L Jacksons character feel justified in his actions and not an angry bastard. I almost felt sorry for Sam after seeing how he pulled it off.

Kudos to Lord of the Curry for his excellent taste in having viewed Heat. Not only did it have a great ending, it had one of the best bank jobs I've ever seen in film. But now to state what I'm here for. Best ending:

 

Way of the Gun: Ryan Phillipe and Benicio Del Toro lying bleeding in an old Mexican town.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: Johnny Depp driving a beat to shit convertible in to the desert, US flag flapping behind him.

The Hunted: (last 20 minutes) That is one BADASS ninja swordfight.

Unforgiven: Clint Eastwood discovers he hasn't changed at all and shoots up a bar.

The Day of the Jackal: (last 10 minutes) Can we say SUSPENSE???

godthedog shows commendable taste inmovies--particularly in his selection of Magnolia.

 

One of my all-time favorite endings comes from a small, unassuming film called Kicking and Screaming. It's a multi-character piece, but the film's central couple is seeing their relationship on the rocks (for reasons too long to get into here). Anyway, throughout several points in the film, we keep seeing flashbacks to happier times for the two, and the final scene, quoted here, is absolutely perfect:

 

Grover: Ok, the way I see it, if we were an old couple, dated for years, graduated, away from all these scholastic complications, and I reached over and kissed you, you wouldn't say a word, you'd be delighted, probably, but if I was to do that now it'd be quite forward, and if I did it the first time we ever met you probably would hit me.

Jane: What do you mean?

Grover: I just wish we were an old couple so I could do that.

 

The dialogue doesn't quite have the same punch here on your computer screen--though it's still very, very good--but in the film everything is delivered so pitch perfectly that I cannot help but love it.

As far as twists go, I would have to say the ending to Unbreakable. Usually, I can figure out the ending long before it occurs (Usual Suspects, Sixth Sense, etc), but I was legit suprised at Elijah Price being the villain. Watching it a second time, I caught things that should have tipped me off, but they didn't register during the first watch.

 

Overall ending is the Truman Show. Not because of what happens, but because it is just so visually stunning. Truman standing against a painted backdrop of the sky, except for the exit door, which opens to blackness (you can't see anything outside). Christof speaks to Truman as if he were God, with the fantastic soundtrack playing the whole time. It really is one of the underappreciated endings of all time.

I know, that really has nothing to do with the topic. It's just this flick has a pretty solid soundtrack.

 

Se7en & Fight Club are favorites of mine.

 

Unbreakable was *okay*. It would have been a great deal better if they had left out the text on the screen at the end. Not EVERYTHING needs a happy ending.

The Deer Hunter-one of the greatest endings ever. This movie made me a huge DeNiro and Walken fan.

 

Goodfellas-Can't even describe how great it was.

 

Training Day-when Alonzo stopped at that light and looked around slightly, you just knew that HE knew he was going to die. When he was shot to all hell much like Sonny Corleone, he still tried to cling to life. And Jake just "casually" walking up to his house after a hard day of work was great.

I really like the ending sequence in Se7en, with Detective Mills just struggling back and forth with his urge to take revenge. Good shit.

 

Of course, there's always the Godfather, where Al Pacino has become the new Don and Diane Keaton can only watch as his new business associates flank around him and the door slowly closes.

The end to Higher Learning has always been a favorite of mine. Seeing Malik(Omar Epps) get his hands on Remy (Micheal Rappaport) was an image movie wise that i cant seem to forget.

 

I also like the end to Predator. Arnold at his best, i think he killed like 8 guys in about 30 minutes and it took him the rest of the movie to kill Arnold. I loved that, and Predator 2 really killed that movie for me.

 

Young Guns part 1 was good for its ending, that something that when i see it on cable nowadays it still leaves me shook.

Agreed.

 

Another great ending from british horror cinema was the ending for Witchfinder General. I thought it was just absolutely chilling.

 

The ending to Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is another favorite of mine.

 

But my absolute favorite is the ending to Werner Herzog's Aguirre - the Wrath of God. The whole long tracking shot of Aguirre on the raft, surrounded by corpses, while still plotting about his new kingdom while the hypnotic soundtrack playing is one of the most powerful images I have ever come across in any movie.
