The Scourge Redux

Marvel in 80s had brutally clever idea of the Scourge of the Underworld who wiped out the vast majority of C and D grade villains, and even some of the goofier B grade. It was a wonderfully simplistic way of cleaning out bad jokes, bad ideas and dead ends.

I was thinking about this last night while I was painting models, about whether they need to do something like this again. Its been almost twenty years, and alot of crap has floated down the line since then.

If they did (not neccessarily the Scourge again, but a similar idea), who needs to be taken out with extreme prejudice so that no writer ever considers using a character again?

A few names like Gatling pop up, but I was out of superhero comics for a few years in the 90s, so I missed alot of the bad ideas.

I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of these kinds of massive character purges. Who knows, in the right hands, perhaps Turner D. Century could have been turned into a really cool character. OK, that wasn't a good example, but still...I think Limbo is an appropriate enough fate for stupid characters. If say, Geoff Johns or Kurt Busiek or someone like that wants to revive a lame character in order to make them interesting, more power to them. (Nearly all of the original Thunderbolts were B or C grade villains, and could easily have been part of Scourge's massacre).

If they continue to mess with her then Rouge needs to be killed off. I mean, they just screwed her up with all those changes in her powers, she almost deserves the same fate as Psylocke who also got mercifully killed after her 234535th powers change.

Sorry Rouge fans, I like her but not the way she is now.

I'm soooo glad I dropped X-Treme X-Men. That way I don't ever have to deal with Rogue's wacky powers or the annoying on-again / off-again romance between her & Gambit.

If you were going to do a Scourge storyline, I say start with the X universe. There's a lot of mutants running around that could get offed. They tried to do it with Nova a few months back, but the majority of those deaths were either "offscreen" or of meaningless mutants.

Well, they did get rid of a lot of mutants when Genosha got... whatever the hell happened there, I don't read X-Men regularly anymore. The Legacy Virus got rid of some more mutants as well.

Yet still there are 15 million mutants in the Marvel Universe. In-fucking-credible. Where would you start?

Heh, actually, I think Scourge eventually got kicked down to that C and D level of characters in the Marvel Universe. I have a hazy memory of a Captain America comic where the Red Skull had summoned a lot of hired goons from the Marvel Universe to break stuff...and Scourge was there.

If I remember right, Scourge was introduced as "Scourge, the fourth member of the respected line, and somebody I'm sure most of you know"...which I guess means that the first three Scourges were killed. Either way, Scourge was essentially treated like a bitch in that particular comic.

If Scourge would pop the new Angel (and the old one, for that matter) right in the face, i'd be a happy man. It won't happen though, since no X-Man will ever die again 'cuz mr "plot device from hell", Xorn, would save them/

Given that I haven't read X-Men comics in a while...I really want to ask.

But at the same time, I'm not sure I want to know the answer anyway.

Grant Morrison introduced Xorn in New X-Men Annual 2001. His ability is that he can heal basically anything. He recently gave Professor X his ability to walk back... again.

Let me make sure I got this straight - Prof got his legs crushed sometime after his first meeting with the Shadow King (and Ororo Munroe), was healed by the Morlock Healer (?), got his legs crushed again by ?, was infected by the Brood and put into a cloned body, and got THOSE legs crushed by Shadow King(?), and now can walk again?

Geez. If I were Xavier, I'd keep the handicapped license plates - he's gonna need 'em in a year or two...

His original legs were crushed by Lucifer, but I can't remember how he got back his legs pre-Brood.
