Who should be Baseball Commissioner

The commissioner is nothing more than the owners' represenative. If I had a choice though, I would go with writer Bill James, of whom I've read more practical solutions than any other writer. Don't think he'd accept it though.

I voted for Giuliani, but unless the commissioner is given more authority to act independent of the owners, it wouldn't matter if you installed King Solomon into the post. I like some of Costas' old-school ideas, but I think Rudy G would be more assertive and get more results, even if he only does it by trading on his September 2001 reputation.

In an ideal world Curt Schilling would be a good choice when he is done. Whenever he talks baseball the ideas he comes up with are usually great but he is such a hardliner when it comes to players union stuff he would not be much different than Selig sadly.

Hall of Famer and U.S. senator Jim Bunning. He's a former Phillies star ( a plus for me), a passionate baseball man, and best of all, he thinks Bud Selig is doing a shitty job. That works for me.

Selig has no speaking skills and that hurts him a lot. He comes across as distant and uncaring when he is not from what I've read.

 

Schilling would be a disaster, he is way too much of a Union guy. The owners would never vote someone in who hates them.

 

Maybe President Bush would be ok after 2008, but who knows?

Robonson became a Facist dictator when it came to dishing out suspensions last year, so I don't think giving him the comishinership would be all that good. Robonson went nut suspending pitchers for pitching inside, perhaps because he got hit so much becasue he hung way out over the plate? How can one be sure that he wouldn't unfairly treat the owners or players who he doesn't like or agree with?

I agree. Who is there right now that knows the game well enough and is at least somewhat impartial?

 

Peter Gammons? I don't think so.

Jesse Ventura? I don't think he has enough knoweldge of the game. He's more of a Football guy isn't he?

Most reporters tend to be very anti-owner and pro-Union. Plus they tend to make enemies with certain players who don't like them.

 

I'd rule out any former player or owner becaue of the inherant biases thay would have. But who's left?

You need a commisioner to make sure the interests of the game are pursued. And I think Selig is doing a fine job, as he seems genuinely interested in restoring some competitive balance in baseball so it can have the success the NFL is having now.

-Taking every oppurtunity to claim baseball is in serious financial trouble, diispite indepentant analysis to the contrary.

 

-Threatening cities that unless they build new baseball stadiums, they'll lose their teams. Never mind that money could've gone to education, and never mind that the owners will reap the profits, and never mind that tickets to these new parks will cost more.

 

-Allowing the man who destroyed the Expos the oppurtunity to buy another team which he is currently in the process of running into the ground as well, while leaving the Expos ownerless and still without any kind of television coverage whatsoever.

 

-Introduced the wild card, forever destroying divisional races.

 

-Presided over the biggest All Star Game disgrace in history.

 

-Continously lying to the fans about the game and its finances.

 

-Lying to congress, under oath, about the finances of the game.

 

-Threatening to contract two teams, but refusing to name the two teams, handicapping sales in 5-6 cities.

 

Need a go on? Selig is the absolute worse thing to happen to baseball since the Black Sox scandal. The man is a cancer on professional baseball and needs to be disposed of in the cheapest and most efficient manner.

Again I ask, what competitive balance problem? If baseball had the same 16 game schedule and single elimination playoff format, then they'd have the same competitive balance the NFL has. When's the last time baseball had a team lose 90% of their games? Football has one about every year. In baseball, the absolute worst team EVER still won 25% of their games. That's a competitive balance problem? In 2000, no team finished over .600 or under .400. The Brewers keep losing? It's not because of the system, its because they suck. Sure, lets make baseball like football. Lets give charity for incompetance. God. If you want baseball to be like football, then go watch football. Baseball will never be football, and that's perfectly ok with me.

Peter Gammons.

We all know that he has a great head for the game, and a creative mind, but he has one bigger qualification.

He loves Baseball above all else. When it came down to it, you know he would do what's best for the game.

I doubt Gammons would take the job. But he might be a decent choice. Gammons has every Baseball fans dream job, he gets paid to watch, talk, and write about MLB, why would he want the problems of the commisher's office, when he has it made?
