I don't know how you people feel, but I have personally always felt that Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins was overrated, and while it may not be the best, it certainly deserves some recognition as one of the best...

wow, my dream topic. here goes, this is going to be long:

nevermind, nirvana: gotta be here, at least for historical value. i like the album & can definitely listen to it all the way through, but not one of my favorites.

in utero, ibid: my favorite nirvana album, my favorite alternative album. for the most part the lyrics make no sense, but i don't really care because the sound is so raw.

unplugged in new york, ibid: great, great album (and a member of my 'holy trinity' of 1994). velvet underground's grey album for the 90s.

godWEENsatan, ween: debut album of my favorite band that's still together. they're geniuses, capable of capturing almost any genre, funny as hell, and great songwriters. this album is a little inconsistent, but it's bound to be when there's 26 tracks.

the pod, ween: i firmly believe that this is one of the greatest albums ever. no 2 songs sound alike AT ALL; everything manages to be catchy, funny and somehow disturbing all at the same time. except 'white light/white heat', this is the ultimate lo-fi album. plus the inspiration for my avatar and sub-name.

the mollusk, ween: through the years, they've been moving farther away from toilet humor and satirizing music, and closer to just making good music. this is about the midway point, where they could write great legitimate music and still be funny.

the whole 90s pearl jam catalog (minus 'yield'): i'm lumping them all together because, to me, each of the albums is about as good as another. which is to say, really fucking good.

under the pink, tori amos: a couple of slightly meandering tracks keep this album from true greatness, but it comes damn close. a little less pop than 'little earthquakes', and a little more simple piano-playing intensity. i don't know how i forgot 'yes, anastasia' from my list of top 5 final tracks.

boys for pele, ibid: tori's only great album, and her peak as an artist. production is kept as sparse as possible, and the focus is where it should be: on the piano and the voice. and you can't lose with the photo of tori breast-feeding a pig in the liner notes.

from the choirgirl hotel, ibid: a move away from the naked & intense style tori's known for, experimenting more with guitars and electronic music. doesn't work as well as 'pele', but still very good.

superunknown, soundgarden: i'd call this the ultimate grunge album, cause the guitars are heavier and more 'muddy' than any nirvana or pearl jam album. second member of the 94 holy trinity. great riffs, nice vocals, not a single weak track.

so tonight that i might see, mazzy star: it's too bad that this group is only remembered for 'fade into you', cause this was a damn good album. hope sandoval is a goddess. the sound seems to alternate between stripped, homely songs and hollow, pseudo-psychedelic guitar sound. very laid back.

anthology 3, the beatles: all 3 anthologies have great tracks, but this is the only one i love in its entireity. most people wouldn't consider the anthologies 90s albums, but fuck them. the anthologies HAVE to be mentioned if you're gonna cover the 90s, since a) they were so good, and b ) they made the beatles the best-selling band of 1996.

dry, pj harvey: fucked up, very unique sound. sadly, in my opinion it all went downhill from here.

exile in guyville, liz phair: the apex of chick rock in the 90s. nothing really mind-blowing on the album, just lots of really really good songs about phair's life and insecurities. and you can't lose with phair's nipple on the cover.

wildflowers, tom petty: basically an unplugged album featuring all new songs. lots of credit to rick rubin for making it sound so good.

sleeps with angels, neil young and crazy horse: an explanation as to why i love this album escapes me for the moment, so we'll just leave it at "i love this album."

live through this, hole: you know you bought this along with everybody else in 94, and you know you loved it till courtney love suddenly wasn't cool anymore. those who say love has no talent seem to forget this.

dookie, green day: overrated, but short and lots of fun.

dummy, portishead: this group was at least partially responsible for the trip-hop explosion in the late 90s, and they sounded unlike anything else at the time. the whole album is just oozing with atmosphere.

naveed, our lady peace: no new ground broken, nothing really original, just a bunch of good rock songs.

rage against the machine, rage against the machine: this is how rap-rock SHOULD be. lyrics that are actually MEANINGFUL, set against music that actually ROCKS. there is so much angry energy in this record it's unbelievable. this could very well be the most pissed off record ever.

automatic for the people, r.e.m.: best album these guys ever did.

monster, r.e.m.: lots of r.e.m. fans don't like this album, but they were trying something different and i think it mostly worked.

mellow gold, beck: funny album, good sound, weird-ass lyrics.

aenima, tool: sometimes long-winded, but doesn't sound like anyone else, and maynard has a beautiful voice.

grace, jeff buckley: last of the holy trinity. jeff had unlimited potential as a songwriter (though he was still self-conscious about his ability, as this album has its share of covers), and could use his voice better than anyone else on this list.

the bends and ok computer, radiohead: bunched together because i think they're equal in terms of near-greatness. the latter is more experimental, the former has better songs.

fumbling towards ecstasy, sarah mclachlan: my favorite album of the 90s. my best friend and i used to go to sleep to this record when i spent the night at his house. sarah mclachlan showed some potential before this record, then sucked afterwards. every element of this album just...comes together perfectly, i can't describe it. her voice and the instruments together make it seem like each song could just float away. the songwriting is bare and very personal, and the result is the runner-up for most emotionally powerful record i've ever heard.

shit that took a long time.

EDIT: double shit. i forgot 'siamese dream' and 'jar of flies'.

My picks of the 90's.

U2 - Achtung, Baby. The best U2 album, deeply influential, and a nearly perfect song cycle. One of few albums that I recommend to anyone, one of few albums that can be listened from start to finish, and something that was actually pretty far ahead of its time, finally bringing arena rock and some electronic influences together. So. Damn. Good.

Depeche Mode - Violator. Another from the very beginning of the 90's, and another that is absolutely flawless from start to finish. All 9 songs are absolutely perfect--there's not an inch of fat on this 45 minute album. You can dance to it, you can cuddle to it, you can think to it, you can sleep to it. You can do whatever. In the dark, truly an experience.

Tool - Aenima. Epic, prog as hell, and draining, but chilling and beautiful. Best-played album I've heard almost period in terms of flat-out musicianship. Blend that with strange, sensory songwriting and a whole gamut of emotions from Maynard James Keenan, prettiest and most brutal vocalist in mainstream rock all at the same time, and you have a masterpiece. "Eulogy" and "Third Eye" alone each have 6-7 distinct movements, and yet they never feel long. Another pretty much flawless album in my eyes.

Weezer - Pinkerton. Produced rough, written rough, performed rough--who'da thought that guys who worked with Ric Ocasek could do this? It's short at 32 minutes, but not a second is wasted: 10 fantastic, thick, churning songs, deeply personal, specific, depressing, and at the same time, all done with a sense of wit. This is what sets this originator apart from the dozens of emo shite groups that followed: the wit, the honesty, and the kick-ass musicianship.

I'd talk about Boys For Pele, but it seems that goddie has done it for me. Those are all I can type about now...but man, for the shit it spewed, the 90's were a preeeeetty solid decade.

That's werid, I was going to make a post like this today. Anyway:

Eminem-The Slim Shady LP:C'mom, this album is a fucking classic. The production and lyrics was good. Before the media got to him,

Every song on his album was little story's(Except Track 15 and 20) and

had meaning. As The World Turns will be his Best. Song. Ever.

99's Illmatic? I think so.

Staind-Dysfunction:Hey, Laugh all you want. This album was the best

Rock album in the late-90's.Infect, This is thier only good album. Aaron voice

is amazing, the riffs are heavy as fuck. Every song on the album is good, but the best song is Raw

System Of A Down-S/T:How can you guys forget this album. I guess

becuse it's not their best. But it stills rules, Suite-Pee, Sugar, War?, and

P.L.U.C.K. (Politically Lying, Unholy, Cowardly Killers) are all good songs.

Tool- All thier albums.

Pearl Jam- All thier albums

Kid N' Play-Face the Nation:HHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, No one listens to that crap.

Hulk Hogan and The Wrestling Boot Camp-Hulk Rules:C'mon, You know Beach Potral and Hulkster's Back rules. Whoop there it is, check it out check it in, you be sixth feet deep if you touch my girlfriend.

Now that's fucking gold!

AIC-Dirt: I Just love this album. I'm am the only one that thinks Angry Chair is a underrated song.

AIC-S/T:Great Album.

Notorious B.I.G.-Life After Death

Nas-Illmatic: What need's to be said? Classic Hip-Hop album. This is the way Hip-Hip sould be.

Smashing Pumpkins-Siamese Dream

Now damn. All these 90's talk got me into playing all those cd's. And I'm going to start a 90's thered in the C.E. board.

Oh yeah, I Forgot.

Amen-Amen:My favorite songs on here are Down Human, Coma America, When a Man Dies a Woman, Unclean, Everything is Untrue and TV Womb. If you don't have this CD, you seriously have no idea what you are missing.

I was disconnected in the middle of writing up a long, detailed explanation for why these are my favorite records of the 90s. So, to hell with it. Here's a list...

Beck- Odelay & Mutations

Fiona Apple- When the Pawn...

Belle and Sebastian- Tigermilk & If You're Feeling Sinister...

Built to Spill- There's Nothing Wrong With Love & Perfect From Now On & Keep It Like A Secret

The Flaming Lips- The Soft Bulletin

My Bloody Valentine- Loveless

Nirvana- In Utero

Pavement- Slanted and Enchanted & Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Liz Phair- Exile In Guyville

Portishead- Dummy & Portishead(fucking criminally ignored, as it's just as good or better than the first one)

R.E.M.- Automatic for the People

Elliot Smith- Either/Or & XO

Spoon- A Series of Sneaks (again criminally ignored. This is a great rock record.)

Wilco- Being There & Summerteeth

Seems like there's no respect for U2 on this board. I can understand why people hate Bono though. He constantly has to be saving the world and showing his preening mug everywhere. I wish he would take a lesson from Edge, Larry, and Adam and just stick to the music. I'm a huge fan of U2, but Bono does drive me up the wall most of the time. I like the Bends over Ok Computer with regards to Radiohead. Ben Folds Five's debut is their best work and a great listen all the way through.

Ok, this is something some of us have done before, but it's a good thing to see every few months. As my colleague MiB did, I am going to list a top 30 of the 90s (in no particular order).

The Cure--Wish

The Afghan Whigs--1965

The Afghan Whigs--Gentlemen

Portishead--Portishead

Counting Crows--August & Everything After

Therapy?--Infernal Love

Therapy?--Troublegum

PJ Harvey--To Bring You My Love

Skyclad--The Answer Machine?

Elliott Smith--XO

Placebo--Black Market Music

Weezer--Pinkerton

New Order--Get Ready

Tori Amos--Little Earthquakes

Garbage--Garbage

Faith No More--Angel Dust

Bjork--Homogenic

Alice In Chains--Dirt

Pearl Jam--Vs.

Fear Factory--Demanufacture

Morrissey--Vauxhall & I

Massive Attack--Mezzanine

Peter Gabriel--Us

Depeche Mode--Violator

Depeche Mode--Songs Of Faith & Devotion

Bad Religion--Generator

Tool--Undertow

Sarah McLachlan--Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

Blue Rodeo--Five Days In July

Oasis--Definitely Maybe

Ok, and now a couple of responses to random comments:

dry, pj harvey: fucked up, very unique sound. sadly, in my opinion it all went downhill from here

Actually, IMO, it went uphill until she hit the wall that was Is This Desire?. But okey dokey.

IMO the best album on the list is Carcass-Heartwork. IMO The greatest metal album of all time.

I'd have to disagree. Heartwork was decent, but Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious was far superior, IMO. It had a much better flow, and the songwriting was more intriguing. And the best metal album of all time is Mercyful Fate's Don't Break The Oath. Well, for my money, anyway.

EDIT: I wasn't paying attention and listed Peter Gabriel's So, which is pretty clever since it was released in 1986. I replaced it with Massive Attack's Mezzanine.

Actually Treb, hearing this album is what *makes* most people Tool fans.

This is their pinnacle work...and what I think he was saying with that is: it doesn't sound like anyone else. It sounds like something wonderful and unique. It's not a great album because it doesn't sound like anything else...it's a great album because that unique sound, presentation, and music is so out-of-this-world amazing.

Really, this album will make you a Tool fan. One sitting, start to finish, chilled my spine, raised and lowered my spirits, and was enough to get me hooked.

But my feeling- as long as he puts out great albumd and performs great concerts he's still awesome with me
