"Tokyo Dome October 9, 2001"

One of the worst shows i've ever seen.

Only the main event is worth going out of your way to see.

The opening jr. 6 man tag was decent enough but could and should have been alot better. I HATE mma/shoot type crap so the inclusion of about 3-4 matches done in that style is not a good thing. The Silva/Singh vs Inoue/Tanahasi/Suzuki/Yoshie match is crap too and everything else that's left while not bad isn't worth getting the tape for either.

The 6/6 PPV has some decent stuff and some terribly disappointing stuff.  Mutoh/Hase is pretty bad, Barton/Nakanishi is...well, Barton/Nakanishi, the Nagai/Iizuka has a badly botched ending, and Tanaka/Kakihara is something of a farcical match.  A lot of the rest is average - however, Kawada/Kojima is quite good, and the main event is even better as it's one of the few times Inoki's hybrid ideals came to fruition.  Those 2 matches are a grand total of about 28 minutes, though, so you could probably put them on a comp and be just as happy.

I recommend you getting the 6/6 PPV. Barton/Nakanishi wasn't good by any means and the rookie match was very basic but the rest of the show is worth checking it out.

Samurai and Fuchi pick up the psychology of Fuchi vs Kikuchi matches from 1993 in their finish and although it seems to be quite lame, it isn't.

Nagai vs Iizuka is stiff as hell. Nagai knocks Iizuka out by accident at the end of the match and hurts him big time.

Kawada vs Kojima isn't as great as you would expect it to be - but it's *** 1/2 material and so there can't be said anything bad about it. These two would tear the house down when getting used to each other.

Mutoh vs Hase depends on you - I've read ratings going from * to ****. If you appreciate long (read: extremely long) basics, that'll be your cup of tea.

Fujita and Nagata do the best worked shoot match up to this time and work a *** 1/2 which is kinda hard to find in case of Fujita.

I can appreciate the basics and this old school wrestling (ex. the 1969 draw between Destroyer and Giant Baba which is better than any WWF match in 2001) but the Mutoh/Hase was just utter bullshit.  The "Wrestling Love" and "Tribute to Old School Wrestling" was more "Let's lay on the mat so it looks old school and not really lay out a match that might seem like the 70's to foll the fans".  But that has happened a lot with 2001 Mutoh.  Because he actually turned it up a little (which meant from being extremely lazy to just lazy in some aspects) he was noted as a top worker by some.  This match and his 4/14 match vs Kawada show that Mutoh and his "Wrestling Love" are about as true the typical WWF fans appreciation of real wrestling.

Everybody knows that Mutoh isn't the same wrestler he used to be in his prime. But I think that everybody who is that fucked, who shouldn't walk more than 300 steps a day and still wrestlers long matches which are nowhere near bad should be appreciated.

Yeah, maybe I am a Mutoh mark and maybe I rate his matches about half a star too high because his body has suffered so much and he still did not call it quits, but I think that you still underrate him.

The show is solid, there really isn't anything extraordinary outside of the main event and that match was very underwhelming considering the talent involved.

"G1 World PPV"

Um... this PPV is a little odd.  If you're one of those folks that gets a show for one or two matches (in this case it'd be Tenkoji vs Kawada/Nagai along with Nagata vs Nishmura) then grab it.  Otherwise it's a waste of your time and money.

"Tokyo Dome 1/4/02"

I don't have this on tape but I've downloaded all of the matches that are worth noting.  The six man junior match was great (as expected).  Fujinami/Nishmura vs Mutoh/Hase was a lot of fun (you've got to see that vaulting shining wizard).  Main event was rock solid wrestling.  Nothing overly special but still lots of fun.  I'd recommend picking this show up if you've got the spare cash.

"New Japan PPV 6/6/01"

I thought this was a very good show.  I'm in the group that likes mutoh vs Hase.  Tanaka vs Kakihara was a lot of fun, if a little too short.  Kawada vs Kojima was about as good as you'd expect for their first time out.  The main event is probably the best Fujita match that I've ever seen, which speaks volumes for Nagata's ability to carry someone.

I've reviewed three of these shows and 1/4/02 is on the way in a couple of weeks if Zach gets his act together (I know he's bogged down, I just like to bug him) and sends my tape (and 12/9 NOAH to boot).

Justin, all i have is the TV block of the 6/6/01 show - where the muto/hase match isn't even watchable because of the clipping. is it worth it to get the tape w/ the full matches?

If you want to see them laying around on the mat, it's worth it.  If you want to see some genuine 'old-school' work and some genuine 'pro-wrestling love', stay away and get Tsuruta vs. Terry Funk from 6/11/76.
