Guest Your Olympic Hero Report post Posted July 21, 2002 I'm not really into Puro yet, but would you say wrestling is more popular in the US or Japan?
Guest PlatypusFool Report post Posted July 21, 2002 At the moment I'd say that the percentage of people into wrestling is about equal in Japan and the US in proportion to their populations. Both countries are currently experiencing a slump in the amount of people into pro wrestling so its about the same I reckon.
Guest Nezbyte Report post Posted July 21, 2002 More in the states simply because there's more people in the states. Now, if we were to talk proportions - i'd have no idea.
Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted July 21, 2002 The highest gate for a US show is 93,173 (Wrestlemania III) The highest gate for a Japan show is 150,000 (NJPW show in korea) Nezbyte, your wrong. Japan is much larger than the US and is woefully over populated to the point of laws dictating how many children one couple can have.
Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted July 21, 2002 "The highest gate for a Japan show is 150,000 (NJPW show in korea)" That would be a Korean show Lets face it, they were probly all let in for free anyway.
Guest art_vandelay Report post Posted July 21, 2002 How is wrestling treated in the mainstream in Japan? Does it get any coverage in the news? Is a wrestler as big a celebrity as a movie star or other athletes?
Guest wolverine Report post Posted July 21, 2002 "The highest gate for a US show is 93,173 (Wrestlemania III)" It's pretty common knowledge that the acutal attendance was 78,000.
Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted July 21, 2002 According to Zach Arnold, the G-1 Climax and 1/4/00 Tokyo Dome shows are often front page news in newspapers.
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted July 22, 2002 Overall, Japan has roughly half of America's population. In simple attendance figures, the WWE kicks Japan's collective asses, with New Japan, All Japan, and NOAH all barely drawing even 5000 people to some of their big shows. On the other hand, wrestling gets a lot more media attention in Japan and isn't considered the lowbrow joke that it is in the States.
Guest wolverine Report post Posted July 22, 2002 "Overall, Japan has roughly half of America's population." Which is pretty unbelievable, considering Japan is the nearly geographical equivalent of my home state of California.
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted July 22, 2002 Yep. And to make it even worse, the vast majority of the people are crammed together in the cities, while the countryside is sparsely populated by comparison. They're the single most crowded country on earth.
