Back when Cobb played...players played for their owner...or not at all. He was the first player good enough and a big enough draw for the Tigers that he was the first to negotiate his own contract. In fact, Cobb was the first big name to come out in favor of a players union. He was even called in by MLB to testify in his last years about a players union. That's how he got the ball rolling.
