No, the man that set free agency as we know it now in motion would be Curt Flood back in the 1970's. He was to be traded from the Cardinals to the Phillies, but refused to report to Philadelphia. As for making players rich, Cobb may have done that by giving them investment tips, not by his play on the field. Babe Ruth was the highest paid player of their time, making more than President Hoover for a while. As for those who think Cobb could beat the Babe in a fight, it may have happened, but Ty Cobb would have had his ass handed to him by the legendary Josh Gibson. Don't know who that is?
