How come everyone hates Blink 182?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that everyone is always flaming Blink 182. Why is that? I think they're ok

I often wonder that myself.

Maybe because they seem a little too mainstream? (Nothing wrong with that)

Enema Of The State was a great album.

I got no problem with their mainstreamness, I just think they suck a lot, what with the annoyingly poppy hooks and what not. They got on my bad side big time by constantly declaring how punk rock they are as well.

they aren't as blatently offensively bad as new found glory or sum 41, that's fer sure. Whilst i think some of their songs are *ok* their newer stuff all sounds the same and that 'stay together for the kids' one was laughable.

I've never been a big fan of punk, but the punk I do like I prefer to be of the dirty, nasty RAWK variety. Naturally, Blink 182's Playskool-style of punk doesn't do shit for me.

I like Blink-182 for what they are, nothing more. They are the best band of their "genre" although that's not saying much.

They're a one-trick pony, and that trick was played out before Enema Of The State was even an idea.

They put out good songs... just not consistently...

Two on this album, three on that album, only one on the next album...

And their newer stuff (that "Let's make this last forever" song, and another I don't know the name of) is just god-awful.

The tune pisses me off, the way they just hammer along on two chords, for the chorus. And it sounds like they're trying to be deep, which is impossible with their voices. AND it's basically a formula blink song slowed down. That bit in the middle with the drum rolls, the way it's exactly the same just really annoys me.

I still like Blink.

I just don't like the product as much as I use to. The new cd just seems like they said to themselves "Let's make a cd with 4 songs for TRL and the filler for out die hard fans"...I just don't like the Pants and Jacket cd at all. I don't mind them being mainstream at all...I just wished they still made the kind of music I liked

Bingo. I actually liked a couple of their songs from Dude Ranch, but the rest of their catalogue just sounds too much alike. You could say I hate them because they're so popular, but it's not even that, it's that they're so popular and yet don't sound unique in the slightest. They haven't even attempted to evolve their sound since that album, and that was 5 years ago.

But if they did "evolve", then everyone would accuse them of selling out. It's a lose/lose situation.

You sure that you don't have them mixed up with Weezer?

I've never seen Blink 182 wearing sweatervests.

Besides wearing sweatervests would actually be more punk then wearing the typical "punk clothes" which are now worn by mall kids.

Actually i thought they did evolve at some point. Didn't they use to have a "edge" to them before they got popular? I have no clue but seems like i've heard they softened up before they got popular.

I don't like them because they're not talented, their songs get on my nerves, and most of their fans are little tools that enjoy watered down pop punk.

I agree with you here. I think all 3 bands are good.

You've got a point here. Seems like the same thing happened to Green Day (my favorite band)

Exactly.

I disagree. I think the reason so many people call them sell-outs is because they've gotten popular without evolving (and, in some's eyes, de-evolving now that they're popular).

Green Day is a perfect example of a pop-punk band that evolved but maintained their popularity. Their roots in the East Bay was pure pop-punk, but by Dookie they had started to write songs about things other than love and girls and drugs. For Insomniac they developed a hard edge... too hard for some, and then on Nimrod they included songs that weren't by any means pop-punk, such as the acoustic ballad "Good Riddance (Time of your Life)" and the surf instrumental "Last Ride In". Finally, on Warning, they had pretty much abandoned the pop-punk style for more pop-alternative songs with much more mature lyrics. So, there's an example of a band that has certainly evolved while maintaining their popularity.

I use Green Day as an example because they and Blink 182 started out in the same boat, as pretty basic pop-punk bands. The only difference is, Green Day evolved and Blink 182 hasn't, which is why one is my favorite band and I can only stand a few songs from the other.

Because as kids in highschool we all loved Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch. Dammit is like... my highschool anthem and I can never have that song taken away from me.

Then they dropped a drummer. Who knows why? I choose to speculate that because they decided to go another direction for Enema of the State, they pissed him off and signed Travis.

Ben-wah balls is better than anything I've heard from them in years, and it's about a man and his daughter!!! Christ! The real downfall was enema of the state, whatever promted the release of that was just wrong. Although it sold millions, it fucking sucks.

If you like that kind of music, New Found Glory, The Ataris, and Millencolin do it much much better.

Much much much better.

I actually like the wussy emopunk like NFG and the Ataris and all that stuff...and I'm really into Greenday...I just think that Blink doesn't make great music anymore (granted, none is really great)...I think the 2 cds since Dude Ranch were just worse and worse
