Hulkamania

July 22,2002

When people first find out that I am a pro-wrestle I get asked one of three questions. I can now answer them all affirmatively. The first question is, of course, ”Is wrestling fake?”. While I dislike the use of that word an affirmative answer is more accurate than a negative one in describing the nature of this business. Another of these questions is, “Do I know the Rock?”. While Rock and I don’t actually hang out and party together, I’ve certainly talked with him enough to claim to know him. The last of the 3 questions is, “Have I ever wrestled Hulk Hogan?”. I’m not sure why they want to know if I “know” Rocky and if I’ve “wrestled” Hogan but at least now I can say yes to both.

Oddly enough I was never a Hulkamanic. No offense to the Hulkster, I was just never a fan of his. I always liked the more athletic types like, Randy Savage, The British Bulldogs, or Bret Hart. It also bothered me that as a Baby-Face he raked eyes, and relied so heavily on punching. Perhaps I like my wrestling far to Black and White. With that said it was still pretty cool getting to wrestle him. (I’m typing this Sat. before the PPV so I’m only commenting on our 6-man SmackDown match) I never thought I’d get to wrestle Hogan. I always figured by the time I’d moved up the ladder far enough to be in the ring with him, he’d be out of the picture. I always figured he’d be working main events or nothing so I didn’t think our paths would cross in ring. Fortunately for me Hogan is working with more guys and doing business in what is likely his last run. If not for this fact I would never have experienced Hulkamania.

Despite not being a Hulkamania fan, as a fan, I was in complete awe of the experience as a worker. Hogan has this “thing”, what ever it is that makes fans go crazy. He has a presence a charisma that is off the charts and unequaled in our sport. Being in the ring with him was like nothing I’d ever experienced. We could literally do know wrong. The crowd was so into him and thus so into our match that it was electric. You seldom, if ever, get that kind of heat in tag match anymore. The kind of heat where you can feel a crowd aching for that tag, and then exploding when it’s made. It was a complete joy for everyone involved.

It’s funny to, that as hokey as I’ve always thought his “Hulking Up” comeback was, I was really glad to be the one who got to feed it, for him. It was likely a once in a lifetime chance (maybe twice, depending on Sunday at the PPV) that really has no equal. I even got email from friends of mine from High School who were shocked and amazed to see me in the ring with the Hulkster. I think it was the shot the drove the nail home for them, that I had in fact made it. In my High School yearbook, my graduating year, they listed my “Probable Destination” as: “WWF Heavy Weight Champ”. I don’t think the yearbook staff ever thought there prediction would be this accurate. I’m not the Champ and they’ve gotten the “F” out since then, but I’m a lot closer than they probably ever thought possible.

Thanks Hulk,

Lance Storm

P.S. You take a hell of a Super Kick!

Lance Storm is definitely one of the coolest guys in wrestling. He's a smark at heart, and he understands and respects the past. Tur, he's gotten a few lousy breaks, but he sounds like a great guy.

When I met Lance last summer, he wasn't really a nice guy....but he seems it on his columns and site. I feel happy for him he got to wrestle Hogan and people he knew years back (who probably thought it was stupid he was going to be a pro wrestler) give him his props of being one.

Lance probably was in a hurry or just having a bad day.

I feel betrayed by Hogan. He never did the Hulk-a-Swanton

Or the corner-to-corner Hulk-a-terminator.

I feel compelled, as ever, to mention the Shooting Hulk Press.

Or do that Hulk-ziguri. Probably he is saving his Japan arsenal for his last match.

Good for Lance Storm, the man from Calgary.....................................Alberta, Canada. Now wouldn't it be funky for him to do a walk-in like Booker saying that.
