Guest areacode212 Report post Posted July 23, 2002 I once met a hot girl from Utah on a train to NYC. She said she looked up some youth hostels on the internet, and found a decent place. You may want to follow her example. You can't get much cheaper than Gray's Papaya on 72nd & Broadway. Their hot dogs were 50 cents each at one point, but thanks to inflation, they're a whopping $0.75. You can't miss it--it has a huge "We love Sarah Jessica Parker" sign in front. I'm sure you'd want to try more than just fucking hot dogs when you're here. Check out the New York boards at http://www.chowhound.com, and ask there. Guest areacode212 Report post Posted July 23, 2002 If you're going to see Ground Zero (though there's really nothing to look at now), there's a really good (and cheap) Thai restaurant a few blocks north called Mangez Avec Moi, on West Broadway between Murray & Warren St. And a little further north and west, there's a good Indian place called Salaam Bombay, on Greenwich St. b/w Duane & Reade Sts. Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted July 23, 2002 just out of question areacode, why would anyone want to see ground zero...i remember my school being about a mile away, and yet hearing it all, and seeing it a week or so later
Guest areacode212 Report post Posted July 23, 2002 Times Square sucks...it's too crowded and it's really not much fun. But I guess you should go, just to see what it's like. If you're artistically inclined, there's the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue around 80th St. Even if you're not the biggest art fan, there are a lot of things to see, and you can just pay whatever admission you want. If you don't have a lot of cash, it's fun to just wander around, say, the Village, or some other neighborhoods just to get the feel of the city. In Manhattan, you won't ever be more than a few blocks from a subway station so you don't have to worry about getting lost or anything. It'll probably be more fun than going to the usual overpriced touristy places (Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, etc).

I was in the neighborhood a couple of weeks ago to take my Real Estate Agent exam, and there were still mobs of people snapping pictures & shit.
Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted July 23, 2002 thats why Lazer Park in times square is the way to go, its off time square and covered in scaffolding so its cheap, but dont go bowling in NYC its waaaay too expensive, go into brooklyn or queens if you do
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted July 24, 2002 I highly recommend bumming around the Village. Chances are you'll find something interesting going on in Washington Square. I can't endorse Times Square, however. Go once just to say you've been. The place is an eyesore. If you find yourself in Brooklyn, you must hit Coney Island.
