Heroic Moments in Wrestling

Recommended Posts

Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly

What heroic deeds do you remember that made you mark out? I think my favorite memory has to be when Macho Man was being jumped by the Hart Foundation and the Honky Tonk Man. Elizabeth couldn't do anything, so she went into the back and got Hulk Hogan. That was a huge markout moment for me. Back then that stuff didn't happen alot, so it was huge for it to happen.

My heroic moment was when Molly worked with Trish on Raw one week after The Jackie match. She could have easily stiffed Trish, or do a shoot promo dressing down Trish on how she is not even near her in skill, or how she exposed the business, and Molly would be probably right to do either. Instead she worked a very good match without saying a word, and probably saved Trish's career as a wrestler as a result. Women like Trish are a dime a dozen. People like Molly are uncut diamonds in the rough.

The day after WM X-Seven with Austin vs. Rock in a steel cage. Austin absolutely destroys The Rock and the fans are rabid. Then Triple H, Austin's long-time rival, runs to the ring, sledgehammer in hand and the crowd goes nuts hoping that he will safe Rocky. That moment was sooo cool and it would have been an awesome face turn for HHH, so of course they ruined it by creating the two man power trip.

Hulk Hogan singlehandedly ending the Gulf War, the Cold War, and other assorted foreign menaces.

Or Mankind winning the title.

As corny as it may be, I kinda dug Austin running in to save Steph from being "married" the Undertaker during the ministry era. JR made that show with his calls too...

" Stone Cold isn't doing this because of Vince Macmahon, he isn't doing it because he likes Stephanie, he's doing it because it's the right thing to do!" (something like that)

On Nitro a long time ago, back in 1997. The nWo was just DESTROYING DDP and Roddy Piper, and then suddenly fake Stings started to appear. The nWo kept taking care of fake Sting after fake Sting, but then the REAL Sting dropped down from the rafters when all of their backs were turned, took off his harnace, took out his bat, and went to town. Major mark-out moment, man.

Notice how many involve Steve Austin...

-- Steve Austin saving Stephanie from marrying The Undertaker

-- Steve Austin helping The Rock beat Triple H at Backlash 2000

-- Steve Austin helping Mankind beat The Rock for his 1st title

-- Steve Austin beating down almost all of ECW and WCW before InVasion

Others...

-- Kane coming back to help after that 10-man tag match involving Foley, Rock, Too Cool, the Radicalz, etc.

-- Whenever The Rock has a tag match and comes down late

Uncensored 97 - Sting coming down from the rafters and destroying the nWo. Sounds silly but my eyes water a bit when i watch that.

Sting beating Hogan at Starrcade 97 would be one if Sting beat Hulk clean in 5mins.

Foley winning the belt for the first time.

Elizabeth chasing of Sheri at WM7 and her and Savage making up.

My 4 favorite moments was when Bret Hart won the WWF Intercontinetal Title at WWF WrestleMania VIII,I am a fan of Rowdy Piper I was a big Bret Hart fan back then.Another was when Hulk Hogan defeated Yokozuna for the WWF Title at WWF WrestleMania IX.Another one was the Ladder Match at WWF WrestleMania X for the WWF Intercontinetal Title between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels. The last was the match between The Rock and Hulk Hogan at WWF WrestleMania X8,it was just awesome to see the crowd cheering for Hulk Hogan, during the match did anyone see the person who had that same Hulk Hogan sign that the guy had at WWF WrestleMania VI,that was pretty cool.

Thanks.

A few come to mind...

- Hogan bodyslamming Andre at WMIII

- Savage winning four matches to win his first title at WMIV

- Elizabeth coming to Savage's aid at WMVII

- Ric Flair going an hour to win Royal Rumble 92

- The Hart Foundation coming back to Calgary during the anti-America angle (The pop they got before the match gave me chills.)

- Bret Hart's speech the next night in Edmonton ("Thank you for letting me still be your hero...")

- Foley's first title win

- Austin coming down to give Rocky the win at Backlash 2000

WM 13: Austin breaks the Sharpshooter.

Watching that STILL gives me chills. It's just the pure emotion etched on his face, as he does the impossible. Of course, Bret never actually let go, and cinched the hold back in a second later, but still. For the moment that Bret actually falls over, Austin is superman.

Bob Backlund during RR '93.

For those unaware, Bob was #2, and was one of the final 3. He managed to get everyone behind him along the way, all rooting for the underdog. There's moments where Bob just kinda looks around with a "I can't fucking believe I made it this far" look on his face, and the crowd is going ballistic for the guy. Good stuff.

KOTR '98: Mankind climbs back up the cell.

More then any other moment, I think this is truely the most heroic moment of the entire match. Everything has just stopped dead, and suddenly, Mankind is back in his feet, with a smile on his face, shoving the ref out of the way and holding onto his shoulder. And yet, he climbs back up. It's just so incredible to see.

I think that's all I have...for now, at least.

I marked out like crazy when Mankind headed back up the cage. That was courageous and crazy at the same time.

When Shane Douglas hit Terry Funk w/ the ECW Title belt and saved Cactus Jack from Funk and the Sandman

I forget when it was specifically but when Vince sent the WWF down to the ring to fight the Ministry of Darkness

Almost forgot...Cactus Jack gets back up at NWO '00.

After that back body drop through the cell, he got back up. EVERYONE went nuts for that.

Though I still say the match would have been much better if the ending went more along these lines...

HHH hits the Pedigree after Cactus climbs out of the hole. Cactus kicks out. HHH goes BALLISTIC. Tries to pin him again. Kick out. Again. Kick out. Again. Kick out.

By this point, everyone is totally freaking out. So HHH waits for Cactus to get back to his feet, and hits ANOTHER Pedigree. Then he drags him back up, and hits ANOTHER Pedigree. At this point, JR is proclaiming Foley to be dead, and this is just un-necessary brutality. HHH responds with ANOTHER Pedigree. Then, after 3 Pedigrees in quick succession, he rolls Cactus over for the three.

I dunno...just the "HOLY SHIT"-ness of Cactus kicking out of the first Pedigree, combined with HHH going uber-heel and destroying the man seems like it woulda been a great idea.

But, ah well...

No matter how many times I seem to watch this match, I still can think about the time where I was wearing my "Austin 3:16" shirt, and screaming every time Austin would get the upper-hand in that match. Of course, Bret was declared the winner(for some reason, I NEVER liked Bret Hart), but then the Chicago fans chanting his name when Austin walked out made me chant along. I still am never bored by this match.

So here are my top 10 Heroic Wrestling Moments:

1. Steve Austin becomes a true icon at WM 13

2. Ultimate Warrior pins Hogan to win both the World and IC Titles at WM 6

3. Shawn Michaels superkicks Bret Hart twice to win the World Title at WM 12

4. Mike Tyson raising Austin's hand as the new WWF Champion at WM 14

5. Steve Austin chairshots The Rock to help Mankind win his first WWF Title

6. Steve Austin rolls up Owen Hart to win the IC Title at Summerslam 97, even though in God-awful pain

7. Randy Savage deafeats Ric Flair at WM 8 for his second and final WWF Title

8. Ultimate Warrior returns to help Hogan fend off Sid and Papa Shango at WM 8

9. Steve Austin's Coronation speech at King of the Ring 1996 (He looked like a hero to me that night)

10. Steve Austin returns to kick Angle and McMahon out of the ring, and Ric Flair hands Austin his WWF Championship and they toast to beer

I totally agree on the HHH/Cactus HIAC match. When he came out of that hole...jesus, EVERYONE lost it. He should have taken repeated pedigrees and just kept coming before finally after a half dozen or so (dammit! I want drama and lots of it) pedigrees, he finally succumbs. Uber heel HHH, unstoppable monster Foley. It works.

I also consider Owen Hart/Austin at SS 97 a heroic moment. It's the saddest roll up in history, but the fact that the man got that AND walked out with his title says a lot about how tough he really is.
