Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted July 24, 2002 Sumo Hall, Japan - April 16, 1994 4/16/94 was a big day to be a wrestling fan:Toshiaki Kawada and Steve Williams were competing in AJPW Champions Carnival Final...and NJPW put on the greatest one night wrestling tournament in history-the Super J Cup 1994.The Super J Cup is a tournament involving Jr Heavyweight wrestlers from many different organisations. The Participants are:Masayoshi Motegi (SPWF), Hayabusa (FMW), Ricky Fuji (FMW), Gedo (WAR), Super Delfin (Michinoku Pro), TAKA Michinoku (Michinoku Pro), The Great Sasuke (Michinoku Pro), Negro Casas (NJPW), Dean Malenko (NJPW), Black Tiger(Eddie Guerrero-NJPW), Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit-NJPW), Shinjiro Otani (NJPW), El Samurai (NJPW) and Jushin Thunder Liger (NJPW). Pegasus and Sasuke have byes into the second round, and i don't know or care why, lets get it on!!!! Gedo vs. Dean Malenko–For starters i don't really like Gedo in this tournament.Since this he has improved a lot.Lots of ground stuff, they do some nice reversals, with Malenko going after the arm.Malenko chooses a body part and fucking hammers it, in this case its the arm.Malenko hits a couple of good moves(flying cross-body&Jackhammer) but its Gedo who picks up the win, with a sudden powerslam.Malenko carried the match and should have won.solid.:**1/2 Shinjiro Otani vs. Super Delfin-Ohtani is another who likes to pick a body part and nail it. Delfin is a decent worker, with a really horrible costume.Otani goes straight for Delfin's left knee,HA HA.The big move in this match is Delphin's delayed vertical brainbuster, which is pretty nasty. The finish to the match is poor.Delfin hits a Tornado DDT, and then pins Ohtani with the 'Delfin Clutch'.For the record, the Delfin Clutch is the worst finisher ever.Apart from that, the action is good-however,instead of seeing Malenko Vs Ohtani in the next round we get Gedo V Delfin.:*** TAKA Michinoku vs. Black Tiger-TAKA looks really young here.Black Tiger is Eddie Guerrero. This match is probably the most enjoyable so far.Its more of a spot fest compared to the other two. There is a superb spot when TAKA goes for a hurracanrana but gets KILLED with a powerbomb.TAKA shows some great agility several times.Eddie hits a brainbuster and a tornado DDT for the win.:***1/2 El Samurai vs. Masayoshi Motegi-I like Samurai.I don't know much about Motegi, but he looks a bit fatter than the average cruiser. He attempts a plancha early, but falls off the turnbuckle.Samurai hits some nice Powerbombs, and-to be fair-Motegi did some nice moves too.Samurai rightly goes over with the Samurai bomb.Nothing wrong with this.:**3/4 Negro Casas vs. Ricky Fuji-ugh...Fuji has some interesting music.Casas looks old.The matwork is quite good but it gets worse after that. This match is rather dull.Casas misses a senton, and Fuji finishes with a few kicks, and a Tiger Driver.I do not like.:*1/2 Jushin Thunder Lyger vs. Hayabusa-Hayabusa is virtually an unknown here, but goes on to become a great worker.Lyger is the best Jr. Heavyweight ever. This should be good.Hayabusa starts of quickly with a sweet somersault plancha.Once back in the ring, thingsslow down a LOT.Lyger goes to leg work.Hayabusa is pretty green at this point, he fucks up a top-rope jumping spinning rana thing and a Shooting Star Press.Lyger hits a Lyger bomb and a fishermans buster for the 123.Very good, without the blown spots:*** Round 2 Gedo vs. Super Delfin-Why?They go into a chopfest to begin. The crowd seems a little subdued hear.Gedo hits the powerslam (which he defeated Dean with) but only gets a 2 count.Delfin hits the DDT and goes for the *shudder* Delfin clutch, but its reversed by Gedo for the 123.HA HA!Actually pretty good.:*** Wild Pegasus vs. Black Tiger-Ah yes, this is much better-Benoit V Guerrero.Nice spot early on when Eddie goes for the brainbuster but it’s reversed into a reverse suplex. Benoit hits Eddie with a German suplex.Eddie finally hits his brainbuster and goes up top.Eddie jumps off but gets caught with Powerslam/Arm drag an its over. They have had better matches, but considering this only went 9:36 its pretty awesome.:***3/4 The Great Sasuke vs. El Samurai-Sasuke (along with Pegasus) got byes into this round, so he's fresh.Sasuke is OVER with the crowd. They do some real nice matwork and the Sasuke uncorks the Space Flying Tiger Drop-which is really a thing of beauty.A really cool spot takes place when Sasuke goes up top for a moonsault but Samurai cuts him off and Sasuke on his shoulders, however Sasuke reverses that into a sunset flip,it only gets a 2 count though.Samurai unleashes the Samurai bomb for a close near fall, and goes for a rana, but Sasuke rolls thru into a sunset flip for the 3 count.A Great match, the best so far.:****1/4 Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Ricky Fuji-Well if anyone can carry Fuji its Lyger.Theres no way Fuji is going over here.Fuji starts on offence as he gives Lyger apowerbomb on the floor.Lyger of course comes back, and takes the mediocre match with a top-rope frankensteiner.:**1/2 Semi Finals! Wild Pegasus vs. Gedo-What is Gedo still doing here? They trade slaps, then Benoit decides to kick shit out of Gedo.To his credit,Gedo hits a nice moonsault on the outside. The match is rather good actually.Gedo goes for a Diving Headbutt, and misses.Benoit hits his own Diving Headbutt for the victory. This was a good match, but i have to belive Benoit V Malenko or Ohtani would have been better.:*** Jushin Thunder Lyger vs. The Great Sasuke-This is a fuckin superb match. The matwork to begin is a bit slow at times but that is the only bad thing i can say about this match. The crowd is goin nuts.Sasuke does his using high flying offence, like a nice somersault plancha.Lyger hits a nasty German suplex, which Sasuke kicks out of and rolls to the outside.Sasuke then attempts the finish (springboard Hurracanrana) but slips and lands at Lyger's feet. oops. Lyger starts laughing at Sasuke-who suddenly pops up and hits the Hurracanrana for the 3 count.Excellent.:****3/4 Final The Great Sasuke vs. Wild Pegasus-The crowd is extremely hot. The matwork at the start of this is superb.Sasuke is jumping around doing handsprings and the like, even though he has already wrestled 30 minutes already. The last 5-10 mins of this match is "off the charts". Sasuke does all manner of crazy shit, while Benoit kills him with his usual ferocity. Sasuke goes up top,but Benoit cuts him off and hits a top-rope Gutwrench Superplex for the 123 and the Super J Cup.This is one of the best matches ever. The Best Jr.Heavyweight match i've seen.:***** Pegasus collects his trophy and a really bad gold jacket. This could be the greatest card of wrestling everbut it could have been even better if Malenko & Ohtani had advanced, but who am I to complain?two of the best matches ever and another great match-all involving Sasuke-are on this tape!.I suggest everybody buys this.
