Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted July 26, 2002 Okay, I've been away from these forums for the last 4 weeks, watching old tapes of any match with any sort of reputation or memory of being a great match. I basically watched the '89 NWA stuff, 92-present WWF, 95-01 WCW, and 97-01 ECW, plus any and all matches on their comp DVDs. After hours upon hours, days upon days of great professional wrestling matches, I have composed a list of the top 50 matches from these periods that I have seen. The only matches that I HAVE seen, but don't have on tape, that I think would make the list are Benoit vs. Bret from Nitro in the Owen Memorial match, and Benoit/Jericho vs. Austin/HHH from May of last year. Oh well. I also wish I had Steamboat vs. Savage from Mania III, but alas. So, without further ado... ***** Matches 1.) Flair vs. Steamboat, WrestleWar ‘89 What more needs to be said? 2.) Bret vs. Owen, WrestleMania X Best opener ever, best Mania match ever, best WWF match ever, best match of the '90s... 3.) Flair vs. Steamboat, Clash VI Would be higher, but the ambiguous finish wasn't really what I was looking for. 4.) Bret vs. Austin, Survivor Series ‘96 How people rate the Mania rematch as better I'll never know. PERFECT match, SUCH deep psychology, and only hurt a TEENY bit by a slower pace at times. 5.) HHH vs. Cactus, Rumble ‘00 The Perfect Brawl. The Rocky interference doesn't hurt a bit, since it's mid-match AND it plays off past psychology (Rocky basically apologizes to Mick for Rumble '99 by helping him out of a sick move that he proably inspired HHH to do). Easily the best match of the '00s, and it happened in the first month. Wouldn't it be funny if it lasted the whole decade? 6.) HBK vs. Razor, WrestleMania X Still the best Ladder match ever. Perfectly paced. ****3/4 Matches 7.) Rey vs. Eddie, Havoc ‘97 Best WCW match ever. So good on so many levels. Psychology, Workrate, Pace, Angle...what's not to love? 8.) Bret vs. Austin, WrestleMania XIII While I feel the first match is better, this one is still REALLY good. 9.) Steamboat vs. Luger, GAB ‘89 I might have this match this high just because I was amazed at how good a Luger match could be. Flawless match until the cop-out (but understandable in the storyline context) ending. 10.) HBK vs. Mankind, IYH 10 Same as #9, Flawless match with even MORE of a cop-out ending. Damn. 11.) HHH vs. Jericho, Fully Loaded ‘00 Easily Jericho's best match. Best job I've ever seen of a veteran putting a new guy over but still winning, outside of maybe Bret/Austin 2. 12.) Austin vs. Angle, Summerslam ‘01 Angle's greatest match in a short career full of good-great matches. Angle is downright SCARY in this match. Truly a match you can feel. The DQ ending is painful, but logical. Austin was TRYING so hard to get one. 13.) HBK vs. Undertaker, IYH 18 Formerly my favorite match of all time, but I honestly can't say that it is with the Kane run-in. Still excellent though. 14.) Austin vs. Rock, WrestleMania XVII One of the best examples of using the past to build suspense for a match. 15.) Flair vs. Funk, GAB ‘89 Call me crazy, but I liked this one BETTER than the I Quit match. 16.) HHH vs. Rock, Judgment Day ‘00 Barely better than Bret/HBK Iron Man, but better nonetheless. 17.) Bret vs. Bulldog, Summerslam ‘92 A slightly overrated match in my opinion, but still awesome. 18.) Flair vs. Savage, WrestleMania VIII Another match carried by emotional intensity, plus an A+ sell-job by Savage. 19.) Flair vs. Steamboat, Chi-Town Rumble ‘89 My least favorite of the Flair/Steamboat series, but maybe I need to watch it again. It WAS the first match I watched for this list, and by the time I was done I understood SO much more about good wrestling, so I dunno. ****1/2 Matches 20.) Rock vs. Jericho, No Mercy ‘01 Go Jericho Go! It's interesting how this match evolves to the point where you can tell that Rock really feels that he CAN'T beat Jericho. 21.) Benoit vs. Jericho, Rumble ‘01 My favorite Benoit match. Second best Ladder match. Completely logical, which is really all the psychology you need to have a good ladder match. 22.) Bret vs. HBK, WrestleMania XII A little slow at times, but near-constant work for an hour by two of the best. 23.) Hardyz vs. Dudleyz vs. Edge & Christian, Summerslam ‘00 By FAR the best of the Tag Ladder/TLC series. Only one spot comes off as the least bit contrived, which, compared to the others, is a miracle. 24.) Bret vs. Perfect, KotR ‘93 Best KotR match ever, which really isn't saying much, but still. 25.) Malenko vs. Rey, Havoc ‘96 The second-best WCW match ever, and like the other one, it's at Halloween Havoc, for the Cruiserweight title, and having to do with Rey's mask. 26.) Angle vs. Shane, KotR ‘01 If you ignore the fact that Shane shouldn't be outwrestling Angle at all, this is quite the brutal and emotional street fight. 27.) Savage vs. Warrior, Summerslam ‘92 By far the best Warrior match I've seen, although I haven't seen Savage vs. Warrior from Mania VII. Tells a terrific story about trust and betrayal. 28.) Benoit vs. Jericho, Judgment Day ‘00 The Submission match. Judgment Day '00 was a very good PPV. 29.) Bret vs. Bulldog, IYH 5 Not as good as the first one, but still really good. Was there another blade-job at ALL in '95 WWF? 30.) Benoit vs. Sullivan, GAB ‘96 Still an outstanding brawl, even after all the imitators. 31.) Hardyz vs. Edge & Christian, No Mercy ‘99 The other great match in the Tag Ladder/TLC series. 32.) Benoit vs. Jericho, Summerslam ‘00 2 out of 3 falls. A lesson in being TOO focused. Benoit is focused completely on Jericho's shoulder, so he forgets that the rest of Jericho is 100%, and that costs him a fall. It's only when he holds down the RIGHT shoulder that he is able to win. 33.) Bret vs. Owen, Summerslam ‘94 Best normal cage match ever. They establish why they can't escape through the door (The other one ALWAYS gets them first), which is GENIUS. 34.) Austin vs. Dude Love, IYH 22 Another great brawl. Builds to a great ending. 35.) WWF vs. WCW/ECW, Survivor Series ‘01 If you suspend disbelief enough to pretend that this match means what it really should have meant, this is SUCH a dramatic match, especially at the end when the entire fate of the wrestling world comes down to Rock vs. Austin. 36.) Storm vs. Lynn, Anarchy Rulz ‘99 Hands down the best ECW match I've seen, although I haven't seen a lot. 37.) Royal Rumble, Royal Rumble ‘92 Whooooooooo! 38.) Austin vs. HHH, No Way Out ‘01 A bit overrated, and it really does start to fall apart, and there are a good number of minor flaws, but still a really intense 45 minutes. 39.) Angle vs. Edge, Backlash ‘02 MotY so far. So much better than any other match they've had. 40.) WCW vs. nWo, Fall Brawl ‘96 Best WarGames I've seen, but I've only seen '89, '96, '97, and '98. Drama, drama, drama. 41.) HBK vs. Razor, Summerslam ‘95 Ladder Match #2. Starts out GREAT, but the last third is pretty bad, INCLUDING HBK just completely forgetting to sell his injured leg that Razor had been working on for over 10 minutes. 42.) Flair vs. Funk, Clash IX Here's the I Quit match. I dunno, I liked it, just not as much as most people. 43.) HHH vs. Benoit, No Mercy ‘00 VERY interesting, as HHH finds the secret to the Crossface: If Benoit can't lock your arm in his legs, he can't pull your shoulder, so Weaken His Legs! In the end, they turn out to be evenly matched technicians, so HHH wins by cheating. And he was a face/tweener at the time. And the crowd cheers. Go figure. 44.) Rock vs. Jericho, Vengeance ‘01 Not anywhere near as cool as their No Mercy match, but still excellent, and with a relatively CLEAN (I consider distractions that don't fight back to be clean) win for Y2J! 45.) Malenko vs. Rey, GAB ‘96 Best straight up, no angle match I can think of. Dean's the champ, this new guy wants it I guess, but that's never established. 46.) Bret vs. Piper, WrestleMania VIII An emotional face vs. face match that, to my surprise when I re-watched it, was the first occurrence that I know of of the "Bret counters the sleeper by walking the turnbuckles, flipping over, and pinning the guy who won't let go." move later used against Austin by Bret, Rock, and Angle. ****1/4 Matches 47.) Benoit vs. Angle, WrestleMania XVII What a story. Mat wrestling, Brawling, Suplexes, Submission holds, Aerial moves--Every category of wrestling that Angle tries, Benoit one-ups him. Except Cheating, that is. Chalk one up for Intelligence! 48.) Benoit vs. Jericho, Backlash ‘00 Quite possibly their best match, but a DQ ending REALLY hurts it. Benoit sure does like to work the gut/ribs for a guy with no finishers that target that region. 49.) Jericho vs. Rock, Royal Rumble ‘02 Second best match this year. Jericho BARELY edges out a win with every heel trick known to man. 50.) Benoit vs. Jarrett, Starrcade ‘99 An often-overlooked, but still excellent, Ladder match. Well, that's it. Any thoughts? Guest godthedog Report post Posted July 26, 2002 good top 50, light years better than what the damn crackhead put down (the supposed workrate freak who put hogan/andre in the top 10). i think bret/owen from summerslam was too far down on the list (my favorite match ever personally). lots of wcw stuff on the list i can't comment on, as i haven't seen it. one suggestion: go to ebay, or golden boy tapes, or wherever, and pick up some japanese wrestling. i used to be a freak for north american wrestling, but i got 2 90s all-japan tapes & it changed my life. Guest I Fear Hogans Air Guitair Report post Posted July 26, 2002 Dude that list rocks although I would of added Bret VS Perfect and RVD vs Eddy ladder match in there.
Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted July 27, 2002 As far as the ECW Matches go, the only match on your list that's above Storm vs. Lynn that I've seen is the Raven/Richards vs. Pitbulls 2 out of 3 falls match, and while I did see how masterfully booked it was, since I wasn't watching ECW at the time, I couldn't fully get the mark-out impact of the genius overbooking. It was on my list for awhile though, I think until I started going through WWF 2000. I Fear Hogan's Air Guitar--I assume you're referring to Bret vs. Perfect from Summerslam '91, since the one from KotR '93 IS on my list, at #24. I agree that, if I HAD Bret vs. Perfect from Summerslam '91 on tape and could watch it again, it probably would make the list. It's the match that made me a die-hard fan, and made Bret Hart my favorite wrestler for life. As far as the Eddy vs. RVD Ladder match goes, I give it ***3/4, and have it currently ranked as the 6th best match of the Year thus far in 2002, but that's just not good enough for me to make it onto the list. Too much prop failure, and the commercial break both kinda hurt it for me. A great match for Free Television though, one of the best since the era of many PPVs began. Honestly, though, I feel that their Judgment Day match was even better, and I have it at ****, as the 4th best match of the year so far. Oh, and I mark for the '96 WarGames since I was REALLY buying the nWo angle back then, I was able to convince my mark side that they were actually trying to take over, and marking like HELL for Sting when he showed up and kicked ass, only to almost start crying and cursing the other WCW guys for not trusting Sting when he left. If they had condensed the entire nWo angle to end at Starrcade '96, like I think they should have, I think it would have been even bigger, since the stuff from the Memorial Day Nitro through Fall Brawl is all really solid stuff. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 28, 2002 Maybe that's because a match with Bigelow doesn't belong on a top 50 list...decient match and all...just didn't break my top 50...if I ever do a top 100 it might peak around 80ish

Guest Downhome Report post Posted July 28, 2002 11.) HHH vs. Jericho, Fully Loaded ‘00 Easily Jericho's best match. Best job I've ever seen of a veteran putting a new guy over but still winning, outside of maybe Bret/Austin 2. I can only assume you haven't seen too many Chris Jericho matches, lol. :P Also, since we are talking best 50 in the main feds in the US, where in the world is Owen/Bulldog for the first ever Euro title? That match is pure gold in my eyes!
Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted July 28, 2002 11.) HHH vs. Jericho, Fully Loaded ‘00 Easily Jericho's best match. Best job I've ever seen of a veteran putting a new guy over but still winning, outside of maybe Bret/Austin 2. WTF?? who exactly was the "veteran". If your talking about HHH, then thats nuts. What did HHH do to put him over? Very good match, but no way was it better than Hart/Austin WM13. Sorry, but i really disagree with a lot on that list. I realize its your opinion and your entitled to it, but heres mine: I]5.) HHH vs. Cactus, Rumble ‘00 [/i] I like the match, but i dont think its better than about 10 others on that list. The beginning was quite dull, then it really picks up...a great match for sure but, i dunno about 5. 15.) Flair vs. Funk, GAB ‘89 Call me crazy, but I liked this one BETTER than the I Quit match. Your crazy! 17.) Bret vs. Bulldog, Summerslam ‘92 I thought the InYourHouse 5 match was better. 18.) Flair vs. Savage, WrestleMania VIII No way is this better than the Flair/Steamboat Chi-Town Rumble match, IMO 26.) Angle vs. Shane, KotR ‘01 It was crazy in spots, but was it really a betterbrawl than (30.) Benoit vs. Sullivan, GAB ‘96??? 32.) Benoit vs. Jericho, Summerslam ‘00 I wouldn't put this in Benoit's top 50 35.) WWF vs. WCW/ECW, Survivor Series ‘01 I only saw this once, and didn't really like it-am i wrong?? is it that good? 36.) Storm vs. Lynn, Anarchy Rulz ‘99 I didn't even think this was the best match at anarchy Rulz 99 Theres more stuff, but i don't really wanna go through it all. I hop you don't think i was just being a dick and saying your list was shit, but you asked if we had any thoughts so... Why no puro?
Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted July 29, 2002 WTF?? who exactly was the "veteran". If your talking about HHH, then thats nuts. What did HHH do to put him over? Very good match, but no way was it better than Hart/Austin WM13. Maybe "veteran" was the wrong word, but IMO HHH did the best job that he could have done of putting Jericho over short of actually losing to him. There were many spots in that match where Jericho could have lost and no one would have blamed him, but he persevered enough to ALMOST get a draw. Remember, in the final count, HHH barely made it up for the 10 count, but fell down again immediately after, and both men were stretchered out if I recall. 35.) WWF vs. WCW/ECW, Survivor Series ‘01 I only saw this once, and didn't really like it-am i wrong?? is it that good? I can see how one might dislike it, but I watched this match in COMPLETE mark-mode, watching the match as if it meant what it supposedly did. Watching it in such a mode, how could you not enjoy it? The entire '90s Wrestling Wars come down to a 5-on-5 match, and eventually whittle down to Steve Austin vs. The Rock, WWF Champion vs. WCW Champion for the first time ever, with the futures of the 3 most dominant North American promotions on their backs. The match told a pretty decent story throughout, especially up until Shane's elimination, and the Jericho turn was one of the most selfish acts that a wrestling character has ever committed. To throw away the entire WWF and all of its history, just for some petty revenge against The Rock. And then Kurt Angle just completely saves the day, and reveals that he was an undercover agent in the Alliance (which is really the only way that his "heel turn" would have made sense anyway), and with one beltshot turns the tide to the WWF's side once and for all, and one Rock Bottom later WCW and ECW are dead, and The Rock has pinned Steve Austin for the first time (and, poetically enough, it would be the last time they ever fought). I like that in a grander, more romantic sense, in that The Rock is the ultimate embodiment of the WWF. He's completely home-grown, he's an entertainer, and his lineage is that of WWF wrestlers. Vince gets to gloat that his Ultimate Creation has allowed him to Eliminate the competition once and for all. I dunno, I just like to mark out. Why no puro? The closest thing to puro that I've seen is an M*Pro tape, and I wouldn't call that "puro" per se. Don't they call it "Lucharesu" or something to that effect. From reading about it, I think I'd really dig the All Japan style, and I will one day pick up some tapes. I just recently bought all of the great NWA stuff from '89, and some puro is next on the list, when I get some more cash. Also, since we are talking best 50 in the main feds in the US, where in the world is Owen/Bulldog for the first ever Euro title? That match is pure gold in my eyes! I saw it when it happened, but that was back when I taped Raw and watched it after Nitro, which means it was like 1 in the morning when I saw it, and I had to get up for school at 6 every morning, so I don't remember too much of it. Believe me, there are PLENTY of WWF/WCW/ECW free TV matches that I wish I had, including (but not limited to): Owen vs. Bulldog, Euro title finals Owen/Bulldog vs. HBK/Austin, Tag titles Benoit/Jericho vs. Austin/HHH, Tag titles TLC 3 (Actually, I DO have this one on tape somewhere, it's just not labeled.) Bret vs. Benoit, Owen Memorial match Awesome vs. Tanaka, 12/31/99 ECW on TNN A heck of a lot of WCW Cruiser stuff.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 29, 2002 I'd say veteran HHH is a little strong...since Jericho has been in the business longer.
Guest I Fear Hogans Air Guitair Report post Posted July 29, 2002 I Fear Hogan's Air Guitar--I assume you're referring to Bret vs. Perfect from Summerslam '91. As far as the Eddy vs. RVD Ladder match goes, I give it ***3/4, and have it currently ranked as the 6th best match of the Year thus far in 2002. You assume correct I was referring to there Summerslam 91 match. I actually haven't seen there 93 KOTR match but if it's better than there Summerslam match I will be sure to watch it. The RVD VS Eddy match on RAW in my oppoion was a **** star match making the best WWE match this year. As far as there Judgement Day match goes I agree it was one of the best this year.. This year I would say the best matches so far have been. 1. RVD VS Gurrerro Ladder match from RAW (Spot's, Spots and More Spot's.) 2. Jericho VS RVD KOTR (Very underated match with heaps of cool false finishe's) 3. RVD VS Gurrerro Judgement Day (Great match with cool spot's) 4. Rock VS Jericho Royal Rumble (Very Good Match although not as good as there No Mercy Match Last Year) 5. Angle VS Rock VS Taker Vengeance (Probably because it was so shocking that a Taker match was that good.) Keep in Mind I am a huge RVD mark.
Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted July 29, 2002 I'm not saying that the Bret/Perfect KotR '93 match was BETTER than the Summerslam '91 match. Since I haven't seen the Summerslam '91 match since it occurred, I can't accurately say, but the general consensus seems to be that the '91 match is better, while the '93 match is still great. Both matches stick out as oasises (What IS the plural of oasis?) of good wrestling in a year of WWF mediocrity otherwise, oddly enough. Since you started it, here's my top 10 matches of '02 thus far: 1.) Angle vs. Edge, Backlash ****1/2 2.) Rock vs. Jericho, Rumble ****1/4 3.) Taker vs. Rock vs. Angle, Vengeance **** 4.) Eddie vs. RVD, Judgment Day **** 5.) Austin vs. Angle, 1/28 Raw **** 6.) Eddie vs. RVD, 5/27 Raw, Ladder match ***3/4 7.) Angle vs. Edge, Judgment Day ***3/4 8.) Taker vs. Flair, WrestleMania XVIII ***1/2 9.) Eddie vs. RVD, Backlash ***1/2 10.) Royal Rumble ***1/2 (I guess) As far as the RVD/Jericho KotR match goes, I found it very sluggish for some reason. It seemed to me that RVD was moving in slow motion a lot fo the time. Still a good match, *** in my opinion, but I can't say I'd rather watch that match again than the Royal Rumble, my #10 match, so it doesn't make the list. I dunno how to rate a Rumble with stars, but since I'd say Eddie vs. RVD from Backlash at #9 is ***1/2, and the match that the Vengeance three-way knocked off was HHH vs. Jericho Hell in a Cell, also ***1/2 in my book, I'm gonna say the Rumble was ***1/2 too. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 29, 2002 The Eddy vs. RVD Judgment Day match is my MOTY Edge vs. Angle from Backlash is second. Jericho vs. Rock from Rumble is third. RVD vs. Eddy ladder match is fourth. After that everything starts running together. However...the X title match from week 2 on TNA is my overall MOTY so far. Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted July 29, 2002 I haven't seen NWA TNA X title match yet, although id bet it would be pretty good, what would you rate it? I think the overall MOTY is supposed (ALthough i havent seen it yet) to be Genichiro Tenryu Vs Satoshi Kojima which Meltzer rated ay ****3/
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 29, 2002 hmm...What would I rate it at... I'm not too good at this... I don't think the WWE has had a match this year that I would put at ****. The Edge/Angle Backlash and the Eddy/RVD JD match may have... But I'd say the X title match was a solid ****. If Edge/Angle and RVD/Eddy were **** then the X title was a little higher IMO. That's probably the best I can do.
Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted July 29, 2002 Cool, I'll have to watch it. On the RVD/Guerrero stuff. I was quite dissapointed by the two PPV matches...i mean i though the Judgement Day match was about ***1/2, and they could have done much better. The ladder match rocked though. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 30, 2002 I disagree. In fact...I think that the Judgment Day match was RVD's best wrestling match ever.
Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted July 30, 2002 I saw the NWA X-Title Round Robin match, and while it was good, it by no means blew me away. I wasn't enjoying the first 6 falls much at all, but the last fall (A.J. Styles vs. Jerry Lynn) was good. I call it ***1/2, and it just BARELY misses my overall MotY top 10 at #11. I also share the opinion that RVD vs. Eddie at JD is RVD's best match ever.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted July 30, 2002 random thoughts: most tend to agree that the bret/perfect KOR match was better than the summerslam match. the plural is oases, i think. edge/angle from judgment day is MOTY for me so far. the rvd/eddy ladder match (and any rvd ladder match in general) is overrated. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 30, 2002 Question For a match to be one of your favorites does it really have to fall into the rating system...can't you just like a fun match that doesn't have one of these overthought ratings?
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 30, 2002 The Angle vs. Edge match at Jedgment Day was the worst of their 3 matches IMO.

Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 31, 2002 Backlash was just so much better. JD and the cage are somewhere behind that

Guest I Fear Hogans Air Guitair Report post Posted July 31, 2002 Nah I gotta agree that the Backlash match was a shit load better plus Angle won I would say that it was the 5 best match this year. As for Judgement Day being RVD best Wrestling match ever I would say that it was pretty darn close and probably the most psycolagy you could get from an RVD match.
