Read the story here.

Wow, has there been any bigger flop in the NFL than Ryan Leaf? From #1 pick to fighting for the Seahawks starting job. Almost have to feel sorry for the guy.

He did make a good chunk of money though, so it's not too bad for him. He just never adapted to playing in the NFL.

About how much did he make? I mean is he well enough off to not have to worry about working? The guy really blew it in the NFL and really wasn't all that in college. tough break, but after that first year with the Chargers he really lost all hope.

It's not surprising - he's basically been damaged goods ever since he self-destructed in San Diego...I'd say it's a good career move for him to hang it up now while he still has some semblance of pride.

The league minimum has been slightly over $500,000 and he played what, 3 years? That would mean at least $1.5 million, but I'm sure the years with the Chargers he got more than that because a)he was a QB and b)he was the #2 pick overall. Most people don't make a million dollars in their life, as long as he never got into the rich guy lifestyle where he spends outrageous sums of money constantly he should be fine.

Oh, some guy currently in Indiana. You may have heard of him. He goes by the name of Peyton Manning (sp?).

I believe he was the first pick, Leaf was second.

In order to draft Leaf, the Chargers traded away two first round picks, 2 second round picks, Eric Metcalf, and Patrick Sapp. They then signed him to the highest money contract in Chargers history which included and $11.25 million signing bonus. The Chargers went as far as to say they would have taken him over Manning if they picked #1 and that "It's scary to think what the future would be like without him, you can go five to 10 years without getting a chance to draft a quarterback like this." Yeah, that team sure is scary. Leaf then said "I'm pretty darn happy. I really wanted to go to San Diego and play for those offensive masterminds. I'm looking forward to a 15-year career, a couple of trips to the Super Bowl and a parade through downtown San Diego." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Then Leaf became the first QB since Elway to win his first 2 starts. Following that he went 0-7 then lost the starting job. During that run he had several incidents cussing out camera men, reporters, and pretty much anyone else. At one point he got in a fight outside a bar, dumped a pitcher of beer on someone in the bar, and got kicked out of the bar while screaming "I could buy and sell every one of you" in just one night. That is so cool. He generally acted like an ass to everyone, skipped lots of practice, and pissed off the whole team. He played 0 games in 1999 and still made $1.2 million for each of the first 2 seasons. He went 0-2 as a starter in the beginning on 2000, then got benched. Then he injured his wrist while throwing an interception. He played a few more lackluster games due to an injury to the starting quarterback and the team finished 1-15. That ended his stay with the Chargers.

Uh, I don't think he's saying that Manning sucks - the point here is that one draft slot can make the difference between Pro Bowler and Professional Idiot.

I think I misunderstood him, so I modified the post to something that I was going to post anyway, but while I was writing it you responded to me. Oh well.

No, because the Chargers had Leaf rated higher than Manning on their draftboard. Had they had the top pick, Leaf would have been a #1 and an even bigger bust.

Look at when Tim Couch was drafted #1 and McNabb #2.

Well, no one has ever accused the Chargers scouts of being geniuses.

And, actually, I think Couch will have plenty of room to improve, with William Green to relieve pressure with the running game and, hopefully, a little more consistency out of second-year wideout Quincy Morgan.

Yeah, but Couch's team sucks, too. Mcnabb has more weapons to throw to, and is more mobile outside of the pocket.

A couple of other Ryan Leaf stories...

He had a rookie prank pulled on him where Junior Seau stole his credit card and Seau and a bunch of defensive players charged a bunch of expensive stuff on it. Instead of laughing it off Leaf threw a fit. Sure it was cruel but it alienated him from a bunch of teammates.

Story #2...Leaf had a horrible game in KC, I believe he was 1 of 15 for 4 yards and threw 4 picks...in the locker room after he went ballistic on the reporters, screaming loudly "GET OFF ME, ALL RIGHT!!! KNOCK IT OFF!!!"

Leaf is the classic case for why draft predictions are so iffy. I believe the standard thought at the time was that Manning would be the better QB immediately while Leaf was more of a future prospect. Well, Manning has a chance to be one of the best of all time, and Leaf is retired. A lot depends on how the player performs under pressure, what kind of talent is around him, etc. That's why a draft prediction is iffy.

As for Couch, he's had crappy talent around him, but this year he has some, if he plays well the Browns will win the AFC North.

Some guys just are not NFL quality QBs, excelent in college, shitty in the NFL...Charlie Batch, Andre Ware, Rodney Peete...and that's just Detroit

Too bad there's no more XFL...Cryin Leaf would make a solid 2nd stringer there

I used to go to several WSU games and I always thought it would've been better for ryan to come back his senior season. The problem was he sat on the bench for so long in san diego by the time he got his chance yeah he was going to be rusty. He didn't have a great start off the bat and all the negativity surrounding him after sitting for so long didn't help him. Was he a great guy with a postivie attitude? Some would say no but when you sit for so long and then get your shot and blow it and everyone comes down on you a lot of the time you falter. I don't think he was ever given a good shot as people always expected so much from teh start.

f you want to talk bust...Bengals will NEVER EVER forget the name...Klinger.

Sad about Ryan Leaf however, He had a world of talent and promise but San Diego instantly credited him as Future of S.D.

Who knows? I won't be shocked if he arrives to Washington Rskins training camp in two years looking for a return...but then again...I won't be shocked to hear him commiting suicide.

Sh*t, I'd be pissed off too. But then again I didn't get a multi-million dollar signing bonus at my job.

Didn't Carter get hurt on the first play in the pre-season, or was it the regular season?

Even better, Shaved Bear. Ryan Leaf: Valet Parker:

Manager: Ryan, that's the second car this week that you've scratched, now what's the deal?

Ryan: GODDAMMIT LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!

Manager: Ryan, I'm going to have to demote you.

Ryan: GODDAMMIT!

Manager: Your new job is to start cleaning up the future Peyton Manning wing.

It's weird thinking about athletes having to actually get jobs. Did Leaf ever get his degree?

I don't think he did. After leaving a year early and getting huge money up front with his signing bonus as well as making over $1 million per year he figured he didnt need it from what I read early on. Maybe he realized it wasnt working out and went and got it, but I never heard about it.

As someone who'se lived in Spokane all his life, I can not say enough how pleased I was to see Ryan Leaf flop. All I ever heard when he was at WSU was "Ryan Leaf is a god, he's gonna be the next Drew Bledsoe! Wsu turns out another star! He'll set the NFL on fire!!". Then he gets drafted #2 and everyone again says how great he'll be. I think draft day that year was the last time I ever heard anyone near WSU mention his name. Although I'll give the guy credit, I wish I could retire that young and have that kind of money.

Well I lived in spokane and outside of it in airway heights and I always thought he had it in him to be a good young stellar quarterback. I still say that leaving before his senior season and then sitting for two years before getting a shot almost 3 years caused this all. Even in spokane around the gonzaga and garfield area there weren't a lot of people that I knew of at least bragging about how great he would be. We just thought he has it in him to be a good qb. Such a shame what happend to him.
