Acknowledgement of Moves

Recommended Posts

Guest Trivia247

Usually WWF (e) Commentating usually makes up their own names of holds mostly unless the moves are Universally known and everyone would know names by heart. Dragon Suplex called Full Nelson Suplexes instead of Dragon Suplex, Head and Arm Suplex, Half Nelson Suplex, both apparently called Greco Roman Throws. Dragon Screws turn into Single leg trips, some moves aren't even named at all, If you go by JR everything a wrestler does is a Take down or Knock down Including Punches.

But lately.. you follow Tazz at Commentary two new Names which are the actual names surface

First the Tiger Bomb... Some Parts called the Tiger driver.. Before hand in the WWF they call it either the Pearl River Plunge, or a Double arm Powerbomb, Thanks JR

and the other, Tazz actually called an Electric Chair Suplex. Evidently Edge is picking this move up as a Signature because he been doing it lately since Tazz been calling it.

Kinda strange but guess I pick these things up.

A) It IS a Tiger Driver. Shouldn't be a Tiger Bomb. That was just some silly thing Joey Styles said when he was in ECW.

B) It's not the announcers fault that they don't know that much...blame Vince on wanting everyone to work a similar style...

Please. Tazz called a suplex an "Inverted powerbomb type thing"

Still better than JR's WHAT a Hellacious move that was.

Michael Cole would have just screwed up the whole thing, a powerbomb would have been a back slam or something stupid

Well of course. Tazz was already correcting Cole's "DDT!" call, but that's not the point.

Cole would probably call it "Wow!" or "look at that!" or something to that effect.

You wanna know who's even sadder than Cole and Tazz?

Don West on NWA-TNA. But then again he has zero experience, so he gets a little slide. But it's damn painful to listen to Don West announce. Then again it's downright pitiful when Tenay and Ferrarra blow Cole and Tazz out of the water as far as being an announce team.

I assume the WWE announcers come up with their own names for the moves because they have no idea what they actually are. I'm still in shock over the fact that JR has gotten "German suplex" down, I thought "Belly to back suplex with a bridge!" would live forever.

I've been noticing the WWE announcers refering to huricanranas as "Frankensteiners" again

Take a look a Wrestlecrap this week and you will see just who used "Look at that!"

Belly to back suplex is basically the saame as a German Suplex... Correct? Cause everytime a WCW wrestler would do a back drop, Schiovane would call it a belly to back. But then again Schiovane always called a spine buster a side walk slam.

A belly-to-back suplex is different than a German Suplex. A belly-to-back suplex is in essence what used to be called a back drop (not to be confused with a back body drop) where the person executing the move would have their head under his opponents arm. Lift. Fall backwards. A German suplex is traditionally a waislock where the person executing the move is directly behind his opponent - pretty much parallel. The person taking the move is hoisted up and over to land on the back of his neck.

I'm a stickler for suplexes which is why it pisses me off that Taz (the so-called Human Suplex Machine) can't even call some of the suplexes correctly. I can't even count how many times he's called a wristlock supex, a "northern lights suplex." Dumbass.

Well I guess I'm wrong here. I get most of my knowledge of the suplexes off of Fire Pro Wrestling, so I guess I'll have to go and look at them again. So they never refer to it as a back drop anymore. Goddamn Schiovane was right for a change.

I found it hilarious listening to Cole on SmackDown. When a big move was hit he would literally have no idea what to say, so he would just go: "WOW!" and wait for Tazz to give him a move name so he could say it afterwards and pretend he knew it all along. However bad people think Tazz is he is much better than Cole. The only person Michael Cole is better than is Marc Lloyd. The both suffer from the Vince McMahon Disease of "Whatamanuver" and "Fugetaboutit".

Yeah, BigTim is right. There is no such move as the Tiger Bomb (apart from Tiger Ali Singhs finisher, but that was called the Tiger bomb because his name is Tiger :) )

I do think the names of all these throws and suplexes are in the back of Tazz's mind somewhere, but since he came to the WWF he's basically gotten lazy and deteriorated in all aspects. And from sticking around Michael Cole all this time, he's contracted the same stupidity virus.

Still though, Tazz is multiple times better than Cole when it comes to calling moves. But the thing is, Tazz SHOULD know this stuff, and it's disappointing when he doesn't at least come through on commentary.

Either all of the above is the reason, or the WWF simply has their announce teams dumb down move names for the general audience; and the end result being that the announcers don't know how to compensate, so they just throw out whatever half-assed shit they can, eventually to the point where it's "normal".

tazz isn't great or anything but he can call most moves 10X better than the other announcers. I doubt JR king or cole would have picked up on the 'reverse key locke' like he did. And he explains WHY they are doing such moves. To the casual fan that's important. Sadly, such moves are few and far between in the good 'ol spinebustin' WWE.

Val Venis's Borrowed Blue Thunder. JR called it a Gutwrench Powerbomb for some reason, Cole doesn't even call it.

And don't forget

Side Slam, turned into a Sidewalk Suplex.

You can forgive Gorilla Monsoon calling the Side slam a Side Suplex, for Dino Bravo. But JR calls a Side Slam a Sidewalk Slam its nutz! JRRRR Bah GAWG Your Clubbering the Move's Name JR your Clubbering it! thank ya Dusty

*Is to lazy to go through the topic and see if anyone missed any mistakes, but they all seem to have been picked up*

It does start getting a little complex once you get into bell to back/shoulder to back suplexes.... whoopie.

The fact they can't call reverse and inverted right is something everyone here can see.

It doesn't matter about teh calling of Huricanrana or Frankensteiner.

There is only a difference if you want to nit pick like hell, and the difference doesn't matter, apart from in some lucha.

While we are talking about moves, what the hell is cattle mutilation? Is it when you take a chainsaw next to the cow that is your opponent and go zzzz-zzzzz-zzzzzt on it?

Well, judging from the one time I've seen it, it's one of those moves that has nothing to do with its name.

It's usually applied as a standing double chickenwing. The attacker forces the opponent down to the mat on his stomach, and then kicks over into a back bridge, which he holds for the submission.

You'd think that, being as how their JOB revolves around calling matches, they'd be sure to learn names for all the moves.

Hell, even if they don't learn the RIGHT ones, at least have a name for everything. That way, when someone does something, they never have to say "Whattamaneuver!". They have something to call it.

Personally, I say make Heyman an announcer again. If nothing else, he was A) A heel and B) He called psychology of matches. Watch Benoit/Angle from WM X-7, as he points out that Angle couldn't out-wrestle Benoit, so he had to make it a fight. Good stuff.

on Velocity somebody called a Shinning Wizard during the Gay team vs 2 Count. If its just a kick with the knee?

Metal Maniac, I agree with you, I loved Heyman's role as a commentator. He would bring up past histories of wrestlers, call the right moves and provide insight on ring psychology. I wish he was replacing Tazz on SmackDown!.

For the most part, Cole picks up on the names of moves once he hears them once or twice. He's usually the first pbp guy in the WWE that uses the nicknames of signature moves. I think Cole knows he doesn't know that many moves, you can tell he gets all his knowledge from Tazz and JR.

Tazz called it first on SD a few weeks back, and it was Helms' idea to keep the name. What really surprised me tonight on Velocity was Marc Loyd actually using the word "Exploder" to describe Noble's Exploder '98. Maybe Noble's been talking to Loyd backstage or *gasp*, he may be watchin' some NOAH in his spare time.

And Tazz was wrong too.

Oh well.

The namw Cattle Mutilation has nothing to do with the move cuz it's a gimmick name.

The Origianl name is WAR Special.

And the technical name is grounded bridging double chickenwing. Which does relate to the move of course.

I meant it was Helms' idea to keep the name the same as the Japanese Version, so he basically told Tazz to call it the "Japanese Shining Wizard," even though we know it isn't techincally the Shining Wizard.

Well its not like anyone is gonna correct them, Probably won't be seeing a Japanese tour go through the WWE. Unfortunatley.
