Attn: Randy Orton now a better wrestler...

Recommended Posts

Guest thebigjig

According to Randy Orton's grandfather on Confidential last night, Randy is now a better grappler than the second greatest NWA champion of all time.

Just thought I would let everyone know about this absolutely startling revelation

Why stop at Thesz? In my opinion, he's better than Gotch & Hackenschmidt too.

Oh, and he's better looking then George Clooney too ya know.

And in other news...

Anglesault gets laid (jk Sault), pigs fly, Hogan executes a corkscrew plancha with expert precision, and the second coming of Christ occurs, but takes a backseat to the news that Austin Powers: Goldmember shattered the July box office record, taking in $71.5 million this weekend

Don't forget HHH jobbed clean to Jericho in a meaningful PPV match. That's one you can't miss on this board.

Just out of curiosity, how many of us have actually seen Lou Thesz wrestle?

Honestly, to tell you the truth, I've seen older wrestling (60's/70's), and found it incredibly boring.

I've seen several of his matches from various sources. They're not incredibly hard to find. WrestlingClassics.com has some tapes with some of Thesz matches on them.

Most older wrestling that I've seen is somewhat boring... but for some reason Thesz's matches, at least from the ones I've seen, were always good

I'm just wondering, since his grandfather was probably speaking of the two in terms of wrestling ability, and with the way things have evolved since the time of Thesz, I don't think it's that impossible Randy may be ahead of him.

I think you need to adjust for inflation, or something.

It hard to compare such different time periods in any sport. For example, you take the great Yankee teams from the '20's and put them up against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and TB would kill them.

It's unfair to compare the different styles & levels of athleticism.

I guess it's POSSIBLE, but we haven't seen enough of Randy Orton to make such a bold statement. Besides, Thesz's style wasn't really all that different from that of Jack Brisco's or Dory Funk's, and if you've seen any of the legendary Funk/Briscoe matches then you will see what I mean.

I wouldn't go that far. You have to remember, that even with the supposed steroids, the Rays blow. Ruth and the Iron Horse were not enhanced and played in larger stadiums, and were still able to belt them out. It might be somewhat more even, but I still think the '23 Yanks beat the 2002 Rays

A better comparison might be football, where you could take any team from today against a team from the 20's. Today's team would win because it's players are bigger, faster, stronger, more rested due to not having to play both ways, etc. Now if you were able to adjust each team to give it a level playing field, then a comparison is possible.

Hmmm....

Are we talking Thesz NOW or Thesz back in the day?

Cause Orton is better NOW...

Well, don't forget how prone proud parents and grandparents are to overexaggerate their kids' accomplishments...

But Ruth, Gehrig, etc. would be going up against today's pitchers, most of whom throw harder than pitchers in the '20's. Add in relievers, which weren't as prevalent back then, so Ruth & etc. wouldn't be facing the same pitcher for the entire 9 innings.

Today's players are bigger, faster, stronger than in Ruth's day, which is why I don't think it would be that outrageous that athletes/teams from back then would not fare well against even today's bad teams.

But the Rays still suck!

When it comes to the pitchers of today and yesteryear, there is not all that much of a difference. It isn't like the pitchers in the 20's could only throw 70 miles per hour. And unless Tampa Bay suddenly traded for Randy Johnson, the Ruths, and Gehrigs would prey on Tampa's shitty rotation.

Aside:

Does Orton have a finisher? I mean, besides the Oklahoma Roll a.k.a. the Cop-out Pinning Move of Choice as of late? I've watched a few of his matches and I've yet to see him finish an opponent with anything.

And I don't mean anything he used in OVW? I mean, something he's used in the WW_ that actually led to a pinfall...

I think he used a flying crossbody press, but that might have been one of the other new boys.

iirc Orton's been using a flying cross body with a frogsplash motion (frog press? Hell, just call it the Green Tambourine).

And my two cents...

When I hear "better wrestler," I don't think "better performer," "better promoer," "more over" or anything like that. I think in terms of flat-out wrestling ability with a bit of "ring general" ability included (as the two seem to go hand in hand). When you think of it that way, I think it's absurd that Thesz, one of the best hooker/shooters ever to step into a pro ring, is beaten out by...

Bob Orton's kid.

OMG! MEANESS TOWARD ORTON! NO HOLDS BARRED HO HOLDS BARRED! ::runs around like a chicked with it's head cut off::Why won't you OrtonHaters keep this blatant flaming of Randy Orton in No Holds Barred? That's what HHHaters are ordered to do.

Hey, I like Randy Orton. I think the kid's got great potential. I dissagree with most Orton bashing because I feel it's baseless... HOWEVER, saying he's better than Lou Thesz is slightly insulting to my intelligence

And what you just said is RAMPANT OrtonHate. If saying that Hunter's matches blow and he should be out of the Main event is inexcusable HHHate, this is NHB quality OrtonHate
