There are those who label Death Cab for Cutie emo, so I'll shill them. They're great. Start with We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, and then continue from there.

-Kicks everyone in the sack for not mentioning Dead Kennedys-

They're the shit and have the honor of being one of the illustrious 3 punk bands I like along with The Subhumans and Guttermouth.

I don't listen to any punk that's too obscure, and I know you listen to punk as it is Sebastian, so I doubt I could recommend something you haven't heard. But I'll throw in Jawbreaker, because I saw someone mention Jets To Brazil, and Jawbreaker is their frontman's former, much superior band.

Keep it coming... except when you name a band, name your favorite song by a band. I'm look for stuff like AND INCLUDING...

Alkaline Trio, newer Jawbreaker, Something Corporate, Juliana Theory, Slick Shoes, Sparta, Ben Kweller, Simple Plan, Sugarcult

Stuff like that.

Thanks.

I love you all!!!,

in no particular order, here and some of the most influential punk bands of all time... and stiff little fingers (just kidding)

the pixies (tame, allison)

iggy pop and the stooges (1969, football)

stiff little fingers (suspect device)

the clash (train in vein, londons calling)

black flag (tv party)

fugazi (cashout, waiting room)

dead kennedys (too drunk to fuck, kill the poor)

sex pistols (problems, god save the queen)

the motherfuckin' ramones (judy is a punk, blitzkrieg pop)

If you want some straight up emo, I'd go with the Desaparecidos, Mock Orange, The Owls, and Coheed and Cambria

If you want something alittle heavier there's My Bloddy Valentine, Hot Snakes, The Icarus Line, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and Q and not U.

If you want music thats more experimental there's Heroin, Cap'n Jazz, The Mars Volta, Les Savy Fav, Six Finger Satellite, The Detachment Kit, and Slint.

And anything by the Descendents is good.

if you're looking for punk bands, you should start with the true punk bands like the Ramones, Clash and Sex Pistols... and then you'll probably realize punk is dead nowadays and has been for a long time

I'm really into the Old School scene more than anything new, so I'm a bit biased:

Emo: Go for the ones who started it all, either Embrace (it's Ian Mackaye, after he left Minor Threat and before he formed Fugazi, playing with the band Faith ... which was actually his brother's band, but that's a whole different story) or Rites of Spring (Guy from Fugazi from before Fugazi existed.

Punk: Depends on what you like ... I recommend checking out a book called American Hardcore, which details every major punk scene from the 80s on. Some bands get whole chapters (DKs, Black Flag, Misfits, Bad Brains, Minor Threat) but most bands just get parts of a chapter. It's a wicked dope book, each chapter is dedicated to a particular scene (Southern Cali, Northern Cali, Boston, DC, NYC)

Personally, top 5 punk bands:

1) Dead Kennedys

2) Black Flag

3) Descendents

4) Subhumans (UK, not Canada)

5) Either the Circle Jerks or Minor Threat

I'm a sucker for the old school stuff as well - so yeah Embrace are stunning - though personaaly I prefer Dag Nasty in the emo stakes - their eponymous alkbum is great - especially 'here be values'

Black Flag r worth checking out as well, though /B]only[/b] with Herny Rollins on vocals - especially on the 'Damaged' Album. and get I against I by Bad Brains - Just get it.

On more modern lines- for punkier stuff get anything by Rancid, or take a pick of stuff on the epitaph or fat wreck chord labels - the new Strung Out album's very good and the Boucing Souls r worth investigating, as are the Suicide Machines.

With Emo - Desaparecidos are simply awesome, and ATDI,#s last albumwas good with Sparta sounding promising - MArs Volta scare me. Pretty much anything on the Vagrant or Victory Records labels is worth looking at. Hot Water Music r great and gruff- get 'A flight and a crash' =- if only for 'choked and separated.'

I dunno exactly what qualifies as punk or emo, other than sticking them in a genre for easy categorization, but one band I think might fit that I really really REALLY enjoy is Thursday. Especially the songs "Understanding in a Car Crash", "Paris in Flames", and "This Side of Brightness"

I definitely agree about Dag Nasty ... I can't believe I didn't think of them. But I do disagree with your suggesting to only get the Rollins-era Black Flag. Everything Went Black, with songs by Chavo, Keith Morris, and Dez, is up there with Damaged as my favorite Flag releases. Keith's stuff is a bit sketchy, but I've got no complaints with the Dez-era. And I've been pretty down on Bad Brains since I started hearing about all their negativity to the other bands in the scene.

speaking of bad brains, one of the bands they had a huge influence on is the beastie boys, who started out as a NYC hardcore group. if you want to check out their punk stuff, pick up either the "Some old bullshit" or "Aglio E Olio" EP's. both are pretty good.

I cannot believe someone mentioned the Desaparecidos!Their album was ridiculously great, and hopefully they're more than a one-shot from Conor. Also,if I may,I'd reccomend you d/l some Bright Eyes, which is the more permanent band of vocalist Conor Oberst.
