Question about the big five PPVs of wCw

Recommended Posts

Guest X-Factor Corperation

What were they? I think they're GAB, Starrcade but what are the other three?

And what were the gimick matches they had, if they had them, like WWF's KORT or the Surrivor Series.

They didn't really put any extra emphasis on anything but Starrcade and GAB, but I'd say Halloween Havoc and SuperBrawl for sure.  Maybe Slamboree as the fifth?

Back in the day, Havoc would be the one show with the gimmick matches (bring back Spin the Wheel Make the Deal), while Slamboree was a Legends Reunion for three years before becoming just another PPV.  Then they tried Uncensored, which always sucked.  Fall Brawl had War Games, and nothing else was all that entertaining.

I'd agree with Tony's list.  Bash at the Beach was treated as a really big one a few times, but other years it seemed to be just another.  Those five seemed to be the ones that were consistently big.

I have to go with more than 5

1.WCW SuperBrawl

2.WCW Slamboree

3.WCW Bash at the Beach/WCW Beach Blast

4.WCW Great American Bash

5.WCW Halloween Havoc

6.WCW Fall Brawl/WCW WrestleWar

7.WCW Starcade

Thanks.

That's kinda the tough part. Bash at the Beach had a lot of big things go down ie. Hall & Nash first match in WCW, Hogan heel turn, Rodman wrestling in a ring, Rodman & Malone wrestling, and Russo's shoot on Hogan. The Great American Bash died off in 1993 and wouldn't return until 1995. But if you go by NWA/WCW history, GAB is up there with the other 4 WCW PPV's (Superbrawl, Fall Brawl, Halloween Havoc & Starrcade).

I thought the first 3 WCW SuperBrawl's were just awesome, but it was a PPV that just died off in the new generation.I think the WCW was trying to make SuperBrawl into a WWF WrestleMania type of thing,I am only saying this because of the logo and the romanumerals.I still agree with my 7.

Thanks.

I don't belive that's the case. Starrcade was WCW's WrestleMania. Although, like you said. The original Superbrawl logo did look like WrestleMania's.

Yes,Starcade is WCW's "WrestleMania",but I just kind of thought it was a little weird that the first WCW SuperBrawl logo looked like the WWF WrestleMania logo and they had the romanumerals.

Thanks.

Bash at the Beach saw the formation of the NWO AND Hulk Hogan's debut vs. Ric Flair (which of course was his first WCW title)

It deserves some consideration

No. It's only 5. It's like what Foley wrote. The WWF had the big five then the WCW got big 5. Then WCW went to twelve and the WWF wrote to twelve.

The order of importance for WCW PPVs was this:

Starrcade

SuperBrawl

Fall Brawl

Slamboree

Halloween Havoc

Bash at the Beach

Spring Stampede

Great American Bash

Road Wild

Uncensored

World War III

Souled Out

Even though the Great American Bash didn't take place in 1993 and 1994 ('94 GAB was replaced by the 1st ever Spring Stampede), it still has got to rank as one of the top 5.  The Bash is the event where WarGames got its start back in 1987.

If you break it down a little more, just look at the years the big PPVs (big in my mind) were around...

Starrcade (1983-2000)

The Great American Bash (1985-1992, 1995-2000)

Halloween Havoc (1989-2000)

Superbrawl (1991-2001)

Bash at the Beach (1994-2000)

WrestleWar (1989-1992)/Fall Brawl (1993-2000)

So, I think half of WCW's PPVs were considered big shows

I wouldn't call UnCensored a "Big 5" show because they mostly were horrible as far as PPVs went.  The gimmick match thing never really panned out, and it just seemed like a lot of senseless overbooking at those shows.  Souled Out started as a horrible "nWo showcase" PPV in 1997, and was maybe mediocre at best from '98-'00.  Spring Stampede was just a filler PPV, much like most of the others that WCW ran.

Then again, in Tony Schiavone's mind, every WCW PPV was a big one and "the biggest pay-per-view in the history of our sport!"

Terry

There was only one excellent Souled Out PPV. That was in 1998. All the Souled Out PPV's sucked.

Starcade was always pushed as the biggest and BATB was the second.  From BATB 94 (the 1st Bash at the Beach, it was "Beach Blast" before that) to the last one it almost always had the biggest matches/events of the two shows.

Hogan vs. Flair (94), Hogan vs. Vader (95), nWo (96), Rodman (97), Rodman and Malone (98), 99 sucked, Russo's tirade and Booker's 1st world title.

Lets compare and contrast that with Starcade over the same period.

Hogan vs. Beefcake (94), Flair vs. Savage (95), Hogan vs. Piper (96), Hogan vs. Sting (97), Nash vs. Goldberg (98), Hart vs. Goldberg (99), Steiner vs. Sid (2000)

Bymy tally 94,5,6,8, and 2000 went to BATB, with 98 being very close, the mainstream media attention gives it to BATB.

5-2 BATB wins, I say it was the most important show of the Hogan era.
