Dogma: Take Three (and four)

July 31, 2002

For those of you who just can't get enough Kevin Smith, (and I know you’re out there). Lions Gate Entertainment has announced a third version of the film to hit shelves this fall.

After a fairly decent but barren initial release of the film for the casual viewer, Columbia released the film last year as an excellent special two disc special edition with enough legitimate features to keep anyone occupied. The one missing element was a controversial documentary explaining and in some ways defending the film to its detractors. In the end, the doc was deemed more controversial than the film itself and pulled last minute. The documentary has been restored for this new version and the film itself has been slightly lengthened, most likely with footage previously seen in the deleted scenes section of the existing DVD set. The new DVD will be made available both as the theatrical version or the lengthened version.

So once again, Dogma will hit shelves, this time with two releases from Lions Gate in the fall and with a suggested retail price of $24.95 each.

If Kevin Smith will personaly give me back my $25 that I spent on the 2nd Dogma release then I'll buy the 3rd one.

These money grubbing re-releases are really getting old

This Just In, Newsaskew.com says that it was false news...

Btw, The only Smith movie that's gonna be double dipped is the Clerks 10th Anniversary in 2004.

Well, that's a relief. Sorry to get everyone all excited/pissed off.

Even if it was true, what's the big deal? No one forces you to buy these new versions.

Good, because Dogma is one of my favorite movies, and I'd be pissed if I had to buy a new version. Well, I wouldn't, plain and simple.

And C.H.U.D., I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I always feel like I'm missing something knowing that there's more features and such that might better explain a movie or make it more enjoyable on a "double dip". The most extreme example of this is Memento - with all the commentaries on the re-release, and not one on my original "bare-bones" issue, I feel like I'm not getting the movie if I don't hear those commentaries, but no way am I wasting my money on some double-dipping scheme to take my money.

I have no problem buying a new version of a DVD I already own if I really like the movie and feel it's worth the upgrade. At least we are given the choice rather than being stuck with crappy versions only, like the original Memento disc. I bought the SE of that and sold my old one off without a second thought.

There are CD/video game/DVD stores that will buy old DVDs, so you can hock the old one and use the little cash you get to help purchase the new one. Or you can sell the old DVD to your friends. My buddy does that a lot.
