Why didn't the WWF push Owen/Bulldog...

Recommended Posts

Guest HartFan86

I was watching a clip of them winning the tag titles @ Mind Games and the place went nuts. I was just thinking for months (up until Bulldog/Owen joined Bret), fans would love these 2, yet the WWF didn't go out of their way to push them as baby faces. Of course, they were pushed (holding the tag titles for almost a year)...but that's not what I'm arguing. I mean...both guys could have played pranksters (just like they were out of the ring) and could be sorta comedy team...but at the same time awesome wrestlers.

Oh well...both guys are sadly gone, so ya really can't do much other than sit back and wish. :(

I always thought Owen made for a much better heel than face, although I have to admit I enjoyed his short stink as "The Blackhart" even though it got cut off at the knees. Anyway, the Bulldog/Owen combination made for a great heel team, even though they were up against guys that weren't any good (The Godwins) or people who weren't the least bit over (Furnas and LaFon). Who would they have faced off against as faces anyway? The New Rockers? Well, I guess that is better than the other options I just mentioned... well my mind just got changed. Forget I said anything.

Weren't they slowly turning the Bulldog face in the summer of '97?

Owen Hart was a hard guy to get over as a face (see late'97/early'98)

True for the most part. He was really over when he made his first appearance after Montreal. But he was definitely not over in his feud with HHH. Perhaps if they had had him feud with Shawn Michaels, he could've had more heat.

He was very over- he got a huge pop at WMXIV.

He just kept getting jobbed it seemed.

If the WWF had ANY fucking brains, Owen would of gone over HBK @ Mania...not Austin.

Not really since Austin was insanely over beyond belief and that begat Austin v. McMahon which made the WWF/E what it is today

In my opinion, saying that Owen deserved the world title is wishful thinking at best. I mean, yes, he was a great wrestler, but I feel that he lacked certain intangibles needed to be an effective upper-level wrestler. He just never really had the mass appeal of a Stone Cold or the Rock.

Owen would have fit in well in the NWA in days of yore, a great wrestler with a fairly bland persona.

People said that about Bret Hart at the beginning of his single's career, as well as Triple H. Look how THEY turned out. I think with a little more work, Owen could have been a top level performer. The perfect scenerio for Owen to move up was when he returned at In Your House: dX, when he attacked Shawn Michaels. They could have built up a great feud between those two, leading up to the next PPV being the Royal Rumble. Bring up the main point of the feud to obviously be, revenge for Bret and the Hart Family. The whole "Black Hart" gimmick would have worked on a few different levels. Shawn could have worked a program with Owen leading up to Wrestlemania XIV, then put him over at the biggest show of the year, thus making Owen the #1 face.

wishful thinking, of course..

I agree to an extent. Owen has a fanbase, but I think they overrate him when they say he was world champion material. He played a pretty good heel though.

If Owen had gone in a feud with HBK instead of HHH, he would have been more over than Austin and probably would have made more money because it was just THAT personal that people would want to see it.

...and btw, I'm a big of an Austin fan as most of you (I probably like him more too), but it's just that after the screwjob, Vince really could have made even more money off of it. Oh well, wishful thinking like the other guy said.
