Guest Some Guy Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 Get a phone book and look it up. Either that or wait for Dames to show up and tell you.
Guest TheDames7 Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 I'm not sure about a lot of it, but what I can tell you is this. Toy stores are everywhere, the biggest is the Toys R Us in Times Square, which is so big it has an operational ferris wheel INSIDE. As for comics, there's this well known place called Midtown Comics, but I don't remember where it is. Call information. What kind of movie stuff are you looking for? Dames
Guest the 1inch punch Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 I'm not looking for a toystore
Guest areacode212 Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 Midtown Comics (where I do most of my comics shopping) is on 40th & 7th Avenue, just below Times Square. Check them out at http://www.midtowncomics.com. They have excellent staff (nobody there acts like the Comic Book Guy) and a great selection (2 floors of stuff, including toys & custom-made statues). They're well worth checking out. I haven't been to Forbidden Planet in a while, but a few years ago, they moved to a smaller store a block away. They're on 13th St. & Broadway. The old store was an awesome huge cavern of geek heaven. The new one is kinda blah, but since you'll be in the area anyway (if you follow my advice in your other thread of hanging out in the Village), you might want to drop in and see what they have. For a bass guitar, the most well-known music instrument store in NYC is probably Sam Ash (160 West 48th St). I'm not sure how good their prices are, though...you might be able to find great deals there, or they might be one of those well-known, but overpriced tourist spots (e.g., Tavern on the Green). For bass guitar books, there's the Colony record store on Broadway and 49th Street, a few blocks west of Sam Ash. Again, they're well-known for being something of a rip-off place when it comes to movie posters and shit, but their tablature books selection should be pretty good (and I think those have a standard price).
Guest areacode212 Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 And if you are, in fact, looking for sex toys, there are a bunch of places like that along 8th Avenue in Midtown (between 34th and 50th). Errrr, or so I hear. If you want more advice on where to get crap in NYC (like guitars & shit), I direct you once again to the boards at http://www.chowhound.com. For non-food stuff, try asking at their Not Food board. There's a huge NYC contingent there, so they should be able to help you out.
Guest Shaved Bear Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 sex toys, and all sort of weird stuff...the village
Guest areacode212 Posted August 4, 2002 Report Posted August 4, 2002 Other comic stores I like: Village Comics (214 Sullivan St.) Cosmic Comics (36 E. 23rd, about a block east of the Flatiron Building) Well, fuck! I was just looking through my emails, and it looks like I just missed a huge sale at St. Marks Comics this week (Aug. 2-4). Everything was discounted 10-80%, and all back issues were 50% off. Dammit!!!!!!!!! Oh well, they're another great NYC comic store, located at 11 St. Marks Place in the Village. Lots of back issues and TPBs. And maybe toys, too (I never really look at those). If you're into video games & shit, there's a cool little store across the street called Multimedia 1.0, which sells a lot of cool imported games & accessories. Their prices are a little high though. St. Marks also has a smaller store on Chambers St., just east of West Broadway. The selection isn't so great (they didn't have From Hell when I went there), but again, if you followed my suggestions to eat at Mangez Avec Moi or Salaam Bombay, you'll be within two blocks of this place, so why not drop in? There's a pretty big Jim Hanley's Universe on 33rd St., across from the Empire State Building. The staff there are assholes, so don't patronize them. I only go there to play Tekken.
Guest Some Guy Posted August 5, 2002 Report Posted August 5, 2002 Are you looking for sex toys? Inquiring minds want to know.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted August 5, 2002 Report Posted August 5, 2002 Toys-R-Us? No-love-for-FAO-Schwartz?
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted August 5, 2002 Report Posted August 5, 2002 I-haven't-been-there-in-quite-some-time. It-was-cool-when-I-was-a-Young-One.
Guest areacode212 Posted August 5, 2002 Report Posted August 5, 2002 I was at FAO about a year ago for some kind of wine & cheese affair. I wasn't too impressed, but then again, we were only limited to one of the floors, which only had some toy cars & girly shit. There weren't any cool action figures or anything.
