"They left it all on the field"

"The (insert game) doesn't matter anymore"

...and my personal favorite. After any tragedy.

"Today's players are overpaid and lazy." They started that one in the 1880s.

"Pitching and Defense wins ballgames."

"it's the little things that win games."

"There goes Nagy's elbow again"

"We gave a 110% out there today"

I always hate the perspective one. Do they really think that I take my sports as a life or death thing anyway. If there were no sports tomorrow I would be seriously pissed but I wouldn't shoot myself or anything. I don't need announcers reminding me that it is only a game. I want sports as an escape from normal life so quit yapping and get back to the game dammit. Rant over.

Peter Gammons after the 9-11 Attacks

"There isn't going to be a strike after this"

Peter Gammons after Darryle Kile's Death

"There isn't going to be a strike after this"

Something tells me the players haven't learned their lesson yet.

About a player who can't hit his weight (like Tony Clark)

"He's a stand up guy, though"

"That one would have been out of Yellowstone."

"We'll get 'em next time"

"This guy could roll out of bed on Chraitmas day and hit" (Usually said about Manny Ramirez here)

Where's Jimy Williams when you need him? He was the king of using cliches to dodge questions.

BTW Bear it's "There's always next year." :)

well several other announcers on Telemudo, Univision, and every other channel do that. Plus some the ESPN guys even did it during the World Cup.

so what the diff between catch phrase and cliche?

A catchphrase is a specific saying an announcer will use for a call, such as a specific announcer's home run call. Usually it can be attributed to one person.

A cliche is something lots of people use to describe a generic situation. Its known primarily for its overuse and not really meaning anything.

John Sterling's home run call is ANNOYING!

No matter how fast the ball leaves, it's always "It's high! It is Deep! It is Gone!!!!!"

As far as cliches:

"Just take it one game at a time"

"Time to put the game face on"

"Take it to them all day long"

"This changes the whole complextion of the game."

"His motors always running"

"He's a coach on the field"

During any all-star game.

"This might be an exhibition, but when the game is on the line these players want to win"

"We beat ourselves out there"

Yup, the other team had nothing to do with it.

If you watch almost any Nascar race, then you're bound to hear this:

"It's just one of those racing deals"

In any kind of meeting by a team:

"Let's go out there and show them what we're made of!"
