Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted August 5, 2002 Well, the first week of August is here, and it's a killer. The next two weeks aren't as title heavy, but the last one is. I'll have to sell my blood just to pay for what's out this week (actually, I already picked up most of them on Saturday). Let's have a look. The AntiChrist The latest gorefest from my favourite company Anchor Bay. This movie was released on video in the 80's under the title The Tempter. This is the uncut version, and it features the "goat orgy scene". Care Bears: The Movie Don't laugh, I love this movie. If they release the sequel, I'll get that one as well. Care Bear power! Clash of the Titans Man, I have been waiting FOREVER for this movie to show up on DVD. I finally get to see it in widescreen, and it looks great. The price is low, so if you are a fan of this flick, you can't go wrong. Exorcist II: The Heretic This falls into the "bad movie/guilty pleasure" category. I love the original and part III, so at least this bomb will complete the trilogy on DVD. Hot Shots Classic slapstick, spoof comedy. If you are a fan of this film, this this is a no brainer purchase. Hot Shots: Part Deux See above. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring It's finally here. I loved this flick, and I can't wait for The Two Towers. As most people know, there is a 4 disc director's cut coming out in November, so you may want to wait for that one. Personally, I am getting both since I'd like to own both versions, plus the extra's on this disc won't be on the 4 disc. Nightmare City Zombie schlock gorefest, uncut and widescreen from Anchor Bay. Only for die hard fans of this stuff. Parasite Another guilty pleasure flick, remastered with bells and whistles from Anchor Bay. The Simpsons: Season Two It took a while to get here, but it was worth the wait. This is a great box set, although the menu's can appear annoying, you can skip past the animations with the menu button. This set is loaded with extras, and it's only $10 more than Season 1, and almost twice as many episodes. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Director's Cut SE Paramount has started re-releasing all the Star Trek films as 2 disc SE's, and this one is very nice. Fortunately, I didn't buy all the ones on the first release, so I won't be buying them twice. Unfortunately, this is one of the few I DID buy originally. Oh well, this one is worth the switch. The Swarm Classic "nature attacks" movie is presented in the uncut, international version with anamorphic widescreen. Best of all, it's a cheap title. Fans will love this disc. Them Another nature attacks, b-movie classic. This disc is worth buying for the cover art alone. Giant nuclear ants rock! Time After Time Fun, underrated flick about H.G. Wells chasing Jack the Ripper through time. The disc has a nice commentary, and looks great. On top of that, it's cheap. V: The Final Battle Man, I am a HUGE mark for V, and this is a great companion piece for the V: The Complete Miniseries DVD that was released last year. Wolfen Another great, underrated movie about super intelligent wolves stalking victims in the bronx. It sounds different, and it is, but for all the right reasons. It's totally original, and worth checking out. Well, that's enough for one week, hopefully there is something you will like. 'Till next week.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted August 5, 2002 There's no extras on the Parasite disc, but it is in widrescreen. I guess that falls under "bells & whistles". Anyway, about damn time Clash of the Titans and Them got DVD releases
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted August 5, 2002 I am so buying Simpsons season 2, Time After Time tomorrow. Unfortunately...I too love the first and third Exorcist movie... So Fuck me but my OCD tells me its time to buy Exorcist 2. Fuck.
Guest areacode212 Report post Posted August 5, 2002 I'll be on the Best Buy checkout line holding my Simpsons Season 2 tomorrow. Has it really been confirmed that the LOTR extras won't be on the 4 disc? Too bad V: The Final Battle doesn't have a commentary like the first one did. Oh, well, I'll still be getting it. Guest starvenger Report post Posted August 5, 2002 LotR and Simpsons season 2 are on pre-order from Futureshop.ca - they had free shipping to anywhere in Canada so I figured what the hell, I'll order it and pick it up when I visit my folks in T.O. in a couple of weeks. I actually enjoyed the Care Bears movie when I was a kid - it's actually quite a bit darker than the TV show. If you've got any little nieces or nephews, this would probably make a decent gift. Clash of the Titans, Hot Shots I/II and Trek II, I may get, depending on my finances.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted August 5, 2002 Hmm. I preordered the Simpsons DVDs and also finally got the Memento SE DVD set. Price for both - 48 bucks (I used a $5 off coupon and got free S&H at Amazon) Thats a steal considering the 2nd Season goes for 39.99 retail, (32.49 at Amazon) and the Memento SE DVD goes for 24.99 retail (20.49 at Amazon) Only downside is I have to wait a week longer for the Simpsons DVD to get here (est arrival is like the 15th) but I can wait.. EDIT Not to sound like Im pimping Amazon or anything, but they usually have good deals as it is on DVD Box Sets, even with shipping figured in(like 3 bucks), if you pay for shipping, over $49 gets free shipping. I know thats where Im gonna be getting the 24 Season 1 set, its only 44.98 as opposed to 59.99 and if I get a cheap DVD and use another $5 off coupon, I should be able to get them both for around 50 bucks.. Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted August 5, 2002 There's no extras on the Parasite disc, but it is in widrescreen. I guess that falls under "bells & whistles". Whoops. Well, it's in 5.1 as well, so that counts too.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted August 5, 2002 I dunno if you only do Movies on DVD (you did do the Simpsons..) but you missed Sanford and Son Season 1 on DVD that comes out tommorrow, its 2 Discs/ 14 episodes. I don't know anything about extras, but the show was mildly funny watching it on NaN and TV Land, although I dont know how it gets to be on DVD before some of the other shows of the 70s. I think I just don't like the Anchor Bay release of the disc because I found out about it the day after I bought the Full Moon one and I don't "double-dip" Also, how do they get 5.1 soundtracks for films that originally weren't in it? When they remaster it, how do they decide what goes on which channels?

GOD, I had no idea this was coming out. I MUST have this. Again, I loved this flick as a kid. Nothing beat giant evil ants.
Guest Karnage Report post Posted August 6, 2002 The Extended edition of LOTR in November will have extra scenes throughout the movie and different bonus features. All the documentaries and featurettes on the Theatrical LOTR disc won't be on the Extended edition.

I was aware of this release, but I only mention DVD's that interest me personally, and that one doesn't. I didn't mind the show, but I'm not interested in owning it on DVD. I'm sure there are titles every week that I don't mention, that have interest to other people.

I bought the Full Moon version last year for about $8, so I don't mind spending $23 on the new one, especially considering how crappy the FM disc is. As for the 5.1, I don't know what goes into remastering it. I'm sure the film was originally produced in stereo at best, and often when older movies are "re-mastered" in 5.1, they end up sounding worse than they did in their original sound format (like The Terminator SE). But then some remasters sound great, like the 5.1 track on The Car which was made in the 70's.

Yea, I was at Suncoast buying my friend a birthday present (off-topic, but WTF is up with Paramount bare-bones discs costing, like, $25?!?!) and looked at their $10 and under bin because they have lots of Full Moon stuff and even some old Anchor Bay stuff sometimes. So, I saw Full Moon's Parasite disc and was all, "oh tiss! I've never seen this one!" and it was their only copy left, so I picked it up. I look up Anchor Bay's website the next day since I hadn't in a while, check the upcoming releases section - BAM! Parasite (which is when I posted my original thread against the release... although knowing me I probably wouldn't have spent the extra cash for the Anchor Bay version without having seen it yet). Anyway, the Full Moon disc isn't THAT bad... although I admit I haven't gotten around to actually watching the film yet, but you can't beat the trailers for Petticoat Planet, Creepozoids, and Bimbo Movie Bash! Actually, the only thing that bothers me a lot about the Full Moon disc is that they promised a Charles Band commentary track on the back but didn't give up the goods in real life. Oh, I'm guessing by how you always talk about it the transfer's not too great either, so when I watch it and see that I can complain about that too I guess Of course it didn't help that I went (broke) the next day and saw not only Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity, but an Anchor Bay double-feature of Tombs of the Blind Dead and Return of the Blind Dead. DAMMIT! I hate when I end up making the wrong choice... oh well, I also bought Dr. Alien that day, so I didn't make ALL the wrong choices...

Guest TUS_02 Report post Posted August 6, 2002 I checked amazon.com and I don't know how reliable they are, but they say that Super Troopers also comes out today. I'm probably in the vast minority, but this is was a funny fucking film. Not up to level with National Lampoon, but this was their first (or second) film. And they can only get better. Man, I'd really like to get Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity, but I've had no luck finding it in Canada. The double-feature disc of the Blind Dead movies is great, considering how cheap it is. I wish they would release the other 2 so all 4 would be available.

All the documentaries and featurettes on the Theatrical LOTR disc won't be on the Extended edition. I see. I was in Best Buy today, picking up a few other DVDs (Clash of the Titans, and one of the best films ever made - Big Trouble in Little China!), and I just went ahead and bought LOTR. Good deal on it - 15.99, marked down from 19.99. Couldn't pass it up.

Dames Yea, but I looked up on Amazon and it said that there were "reissues" of the early films coming, that were available for a lot less. I also checked for a few other films and they had them on "pre-order", implying a "reissue". The problem is, I've never heard anything about any of these titles (others include some Full Moon stuff and Wishmaster 3) being reissued, so is Amazon just having some bugs in their system or are they somehow using the wait for them to be "released" as an excuse to say they're not selling enough to bring the price down? About Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity, that's odd that you can't find it in Canada, because the majority of Full Moon DVD's I own have "Product of Canada" stickers somewhere on the back. The only ones that don't are the ones I ordered direct from Tempe. Weird... About the Blind Dead double feature, I'm REALLY pissed at myself for not taking advantage of it now that I looked up on Anchor Bay's website and that sucker's out of print! I want to get to Suncoast SOON in the odd (or maybe not, it's in the under $10 bin with all those crappy Madacy and Diamond Entertainment discs) chance that it hasn't been picked up yet, because they had tons of Q: The Winged Serpent but only one of the Blind Dead double feature
