Square One

Square One was this old PBS show back in the day that I religiously watched. It was sort of like a sketch show, but all about math. One of their main bits was a Dragnet rip-off called Mathnet. You might also vaguely recall "Math Man" who was a pac man rip off. Now, I hadn't even thought of this show in years until a site I go to linked to this page.

Now, it's about 1 am and I've been studying all day. I stumble upon this site, and proceed to Mark the Fuck Out. I sat here and watched every single clip, and then emailed the webmaster and gushed about the site. Dammit, Mathnet kicked so much ass. And don't get me started on "The Mathematics of Love". Of course, now it's 3:30 am and sleep deprivation could be clouding my judgement. I doubt it though.

Thus, I declare Square One to the be the greatest (math related) show ever. Thank you and goodnight.

OMG, someone else knows Mathsnet, I used to watch it here in Australia every day at 11:30 in the morning about 6-7 years ago. Me and one of my friends always used to greet each other with "The story you are about to see is a fib, but it's short." Time for a major marking out about one of my old favourites.

I remember Sqaure One. I was a big fan back in the day, but I never cared for the Mathnet portion. I prefered the skits and songs.

...and the memories come flooding back. For me it's right up there with Great Space Coaster in terms of underappreciated kids shows...

Frank N. Steenbrener, and the robot that played baseball. I remember the Dirk guy that always wanted you to use your noodle.

And I remember when Mathman actually won, one time..I was like, what?

By the way, how many other math related shows have there been?

I vaguely recall that. To drag a wrestling analogy out of this, it was like seeing Barry Horowitz win a match. Very suprising.

And it's nice to see the Square One love in the house. I'm not alone! *sobs in joy*

I just remembered that sometimes they show parts of Square One on Noggin.

I remember seeing part of Mathnet one day as I was channel surfing..

the eternal question: Why the heck was Mathman wearing a Michigan Wolverines helmet? I think he was a big fan of the Steiners...or perhaps the show was based in Detroit...or maybe it meant absolutley nothing.

Also, the tornado thing that would attack him at the end used to crack me up...

I was really into Square One as a kid and reigns as the only educational program I ever watched regularly.

I liked how the tornado was basically a grumpy old man. And he'd always make these weird yoda-ish non-verbal sounds when Mathman got to a choice.

I really wonder how they came up with some of that stuff.

I thank Darwin that they did though. Eight Percent of My Love is so part of my daily listening now. I was even humming it during an exam.
