Guest TheDames7 Posted August 5, 2002 Report Posted August 5, 2002 The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations: 1. Signs, $60.3 million; 2. Austin Powers in Goldmember, $32.4 million; 3. The Master of Disguise, $13 million; 4. Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat, $7.5 million; 5.Road to Perdition, $6.6 million; 6. Stuart Little 2, $6 million; 7. Men in Black 2, $4.7 million; 8. My Big Fat Greek Wedding, $3.01 million; 9. (tie) K-19: The Widowmaker, $3 million; 9. (tie) The Country Bears, $3 million. Signs with 60 FUCKING MILLION!?!? WOW. I honestly didn't think it would beat AP3, let alone almost double it! Wow....Master of Disguise actually made money. Dames
Guest TheBlurricane Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 what the hell is "My big fat greek wedding"? and why is it above K19? and I thought Signs was great.....a good throw back to old school sci-fi horror movies!
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 My Big Fat Greek Wedding is an indy flick that has been out for a long time already. I can't understand how it's making that much after being out this long. It's been here in Buffalo for a couple months
Guest Bricks Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 My Big Fat Greek Wedding is an indy flick that has been out for a long time already. I can't understand how it's making that much after being out this long. It's been here in Buffalo for a couple months Didn't Tom Hanks produce it? So, I'm guessing it got the Tom Hanks rub, and the critics seem to like it so maybe word of mouth too. And I'm not really surprised Signs made $60 Million. Mel is pretty much a guaranteed #1 at the box office draw.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 Damn.I-had-high-hopes-for-RunTelDat.It was-a-good-Movie. $7.5-Million-isn't-too-bad-considering it-didn't-cost-must-to-make.
Guest C.H.U.D. Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 Although I was disappointed with Signs, I'm glad it did well, if anything, to solidify M.N.S.'s career as a director. Unbreakable was only a mild success, but with Signs doing so well, it shows he isn't a one hit wonder. It will be interesting to see if it quickly dies off, or if it will have legs at the box office.

I can't understand how it's making that much after being out this long. It's been here in Buffalo for a couple months Hype and it's just being released nationally. It's only been playing in a few theaters around the country for the past couple of months. Too many records are being broken these days. Gives me a headache.
Guest starvenger Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 >Too many records are being broken these days. Gives me a headache. Tell me about it. Largest opening for a non-sequel film not based on existing material (or something to that effect)? Talk about publicists reaching for hype. I mean, it did great numbers and people seemed to love the film. Do they really need to add more hype to that?
Guest Karnage Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 It's inflation that causes all these huge box office rates.
Guest C.H.U.D. Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 It's inflation that causes all these huge box office rates. Absolutely. If it weren't for the huge increase in ticket prices, these films wouldn't be making nearly as much. For example (these numbers aren't exact): Signs made $60 million this weekend, with todays ticket prices. If it had been release in 1980, it would have made about $20 million, which is still good, but you see the difference. On the other hand, if Friday the 13th had sold as many tickets at todays prices as it did in 1980 (it grossed about $40 million) it would have made about $120 million. These are rough estimates, I'm sure there is a website somewhere that can do it for you more officially.
Guest C.H.U.D. Posted August 6, 2002 Report Posted August 6, 2002 I found a list of the top 100+ movies of all time, and it adjusts the grosses by ticket price inflation, so you can see how much these movies would have made if they were released now. It's pretty interesting, especially some of the huge numbers they show. Box Office Inflation Results
