SmarkBoardComic News Report for the Week of 8/5/02

Daredevil/Bullseye: Target in November

From moviepoopshoot.com:

The Worst-Kept Secret in comics is out. Writer, film-maker and virtual Charles Foster Kane Kevin Smith will soon return to write a Dardevil title for Marvel Comics. But he won't be coming back to the monthly Marvel Knights title he so successfully helped relaunch a few years ago. Rather, he'll be writing a Daredvil mini-series entitled Daredevi/Bullseye: Target. And this time, handling the art chores will be none other than Preacher cover artist Glenn Fabry.

Here’s a synopsis (straight from Smith):

"The point of the mini is that it's not like the Batman/Joker relationship. Bullseye could give a shit about Daredevil, really. The guy's a hired gun; his face-offs with Daredevil shouldn't really be personal. If DD's anything to Bullseye, he's an obstruction to whatever hit he's currently working on; a distraction from the job he's being paid to do (unless the job he's being paid for is to fuck with DD, as in GUARDIAN DEVIL). But we're going to alter the dynamic of their relationship by mini's end, so that DD means much more to Bullseye. And we're not talking silly tie-in revisionist history here, like Bullseye's dad is the old man young Matt Murdock pushed out of the way of the oncoming truck or something. We're talking an understandable grudge; a reason for Bullseye to hate Daredevil, beyond his simply being a nuisance do-gooder.

Loeb/Sale announce Hulk:Gray miniseries

From Newsarama:

At the panel, Loeb said that the miniseries will take place between Hulk #1 and #2. The theme of the story will explore how the monster unleashes Bruce Banner’s inhibitions, but also ruins his life. As with Yellow and Blue, the women in the lives of the character, in this case, Betty Ross, will play a prominent role in the story.

Loeb also said that a key character in the miniseries would be Banner’s assistant at Desert Base, Igor Starsky, a Soviet agent who Banner instructed to delay the countdown of the bomb while he ran onto the test site to rescue Rick Jones.

The miniseries will launch just prior to the Hulk movie opening in theaters.

Dark Horse lands new comic lisenses

From Newsarama:

The first quarter of 2003 will see the Dark Horse prequel and sequel to the upcoming xXx (Triple X) film starring Vin Diesel. Along with the “before” and “after” projects, the publisher has plans to publish other xXx projects, starring characters from the film.

Also in early 2003, Dark Horse will debut its take on Reign of Fire, which is currently still in theaters. Set in the future, the film, and comic series will explore a world where fire-breathing dragons exist and rule the earth. As with xXx, Dark Horse will publish a Reign of Fire prequel and sequel.

Dark Horse will also publish comic adventures of Shrek (that’s the green, animated ogre voiced by Mike Myers, not the former Dark Horse, and current DC editor Bob Schreck). The publisher is promoting this book as an all-ages comic.

Joe Harris’ film, Tooth Fairy will also get the prequel treatment from Dark Horse. Both the prequel, entitled: The Tooth Fairy: The Tragic Life of Matilda Dixon and the horror film are slated for release this winter. According to the publisher, the comic will recount the century-old events that set a horrifying cycle of violence in motion. The movie stars Emma (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Caulfield.

Harris will write the prequel, while Charlie Adlard will illustrate.

Ssriously, though, is this in or out of continuity?

-Sgt. Rock: Between Hell and a Hard Place, by Brian Azzarello and Joe Kubert

-Zatanna: Everyday Magic, by Paul Dini and Rick Mays

-Beware the Creeper, by Jason Hall (Pistolwhip) and Cliff Chiang (Josie Mac). The Creeper returns in this miniseries.

OK, I realize that Vertigo is supposed to be the "mature readers" imprint, but Sgt. Rock? This isn't Marvel MAX - move him to Wildstorm, make it an Elseworlds/Hypertime, whatever. It just doesn't say "Vertigo" to me.

OTOH, Zatanna and The Creeper would probably work well in Vertigo.

There's a poll/pool that's just waiting to happen here...

-Wolverine has ditched the mask forever, pissing me off a great deal.

Yeah, that is kinda shitty. But at least the costumes right now are pretty decent. Remember the Jim Lee "original costumes" era with Forge, Banshee and Jubilee? Those were kinda shitty.

-Oliver Copeil (Legion) is the new regular Avengers artist.

I think this is a shitty move. Copiel is a decent, but not great artist. I dunno, maybe they'll pick up a decent inker to carry him.

-Robotech is to be relaunched by Wildstorm, with Jay Faerber and Udon Studios.

This should be decent, but to be honest, everything that really needed to be said about Robotech was either done in the series, in previous comics, or in the books by Daley and Luceno (as Jack McKinney).

- J. Scott Cambell's new project may be a five issue sci-fi mini-series for Wildstorm.

...and if he starts it now, we may see it in 2005.

Vertigo has "stolen" DCU characters like him before (The Human Target, Enemy Ace). If they're going to revive Sgt. Rock, Vertigo (which publishes titles which are more rooted in the "real world" than the regular DCU books) is probably the right place to do it in.

Most of those Vertigo titles/one-shots look really good, though I have no idea what Fight for Tomorrow is supposed to be.

This kicks ass!

I think Copeil is really underrated. He did a great job with "Legion of the Damned" and Legion Lost, and helped bring a sorely-needed dark, solemn feel to the LSH. That said, I don't really know if his style can mesh well with Johns' writing.
