Guest bob_barron Report post Posted August 6, 2002 A personal note to my WWE family by Paul Bearer Cancer. One of the most terrifying words in the English language. When you hear it associated with someone you love, its meaning amplifies and grows to paralyzing proportions. Shock, fear, confusion, and denial absorb your mind and body. There is no book or video to prepare you to know what to do or say, where to go for help, or how to be the most supportive to the love of your life. I knew immediately when we received my wife's diagnosis on July 19, 2001, that we were going into battle together. It would be a battle for her life. We turned to our faith first, then to our family. We didn't have to look very far to reach out to our true friends, because the telephone calls, cards and e-mails started arriving right away. You can never be properly prepared for a personal disaster like cancer. Unfortunately, we were right in the middle of switching insurance companies. What a wakeup call it was to find out that we were falling through the cracks, because we didn't have any medical insurance to assist us. Dianna's surgeries and treatments stripped us of everything we had saved during my 11 years with WWE. Believe me, I am not complaining. It was a small price to pay for her life. To say that we were physically, mentally, professionally and financially drained is an understatement. We needed some good news, and we needed it badly. On July 29, Dianna had the CT Scan that we have been so anxious about. This would be the one that would tell us exactly where we stood. We couldn't even muster the courage to discuss the subject last Thursday morning, August 1, as we drove to the hospital to receive the test results. Her doctor walked into the treatment room, sat down and paused for what seemed like a lifetime. I couldn't feel my fingers because the circulation was being cut off from Dianna squeezing my hand so tightly. "It's gone," her physician said. "Here is the radiologist's report, read it for yourself." I grabbed the papers, and there it was in black and white: "The mass is no longer identified" were the exact words. We didn't need an elevator to take us to the hospital lobby; we were floating on happiness! We can't truthfully say that the battle is completely over. But the finish line is certainly in sight. I am certain that we could not have made it without the Good Lord, our family, and our true friends. To each and every one of you, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I especially want to express our appreciation to World Wrestling Entertainment, and the McMahon Family. This space that I am allowed to use uncensored here at WWE.com has always given me a venue to share my feelings with you. I think that it is also time for you to know that my contract with WWE expires in two months. So, until October 15 rolls around, you can find me right here in my little corner, where I have been writing my column since WWE.com first opened its doors. Take care my friends! -PB
Guest thebigjig Report post Posted August 6, 2002 That's really cool. I visit the KayfabeMemories wrestling boards every now and then and occassionally post in the World Class Championship Wrestling Memories board where Percy is quite the regular. It's there on that board where I found out his wife had cancer and of course was very sympathetic to him, so this news is truly great to hear

Guest Ram Report post Posted August 7, 2002 I mark for Bearer, and his wife beating cancer is good news to hear. I know he will cherish every minute they have together. I only hope if I am ever in his spot, I would stay as strong throughout it as he has.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted August 7, 2002 Yea, that is great to hear about his wife, although I thought it was a bit strange that he talked about his contract expiring near the end... couldn't he have waited until the next column?
