I have about 300 wrestling tapes in my collection.

With DVD becoming so popular I am worried that my tapes will become obsolete. I have a feeling that VHS tapes will be phased out but will they continue to make VHS players so that I can watch my wrestling tapes ?

My VCR is fine at the moment but in 5 years when I need to replace it will I be able to buy one ?

Anyone else with the same problem ?

Well I have a ton of wrestling tapes too but I'm not really gonna worry about my VHS there will be some way to transfer them in the future no doubt. Though I'm still gonna try an keep a VHS just in case. ;)

same here... I might try to get an extra VCR someday when I have the extra cash...

if only we could see all the ECW commercial tapes released on DVD I wouldn't have this problem!

Id buy another VCR now while you can get one for under 50 bucks, and then stash it away and don't use it. That way, you'll have one down the road if you need it.

Another solution are those players which have DVD and VCR.

I don't know if VCR's are necessarily going anywhere anytime soon, at least not until someone has come up with a good way to replace them.

Until they have a DVD Recorder for the home or some digital VCR that works really well, is of a comparable price to VHS, and is as simple to use a VHS (push rec + play) then the VHS VCR will be around for a long time, simply because people can use it to tape things.

The movie studios and tv networks seem to really be holding back digital recorders because they don't want people making perfect digital recordings of the stuff they give away for free... and even worse they don't want them skipping commercials.

So until something comes along that can record things really well, don't expect VCR's to go obsolete.

And when the next video recorder comes along, just record all your wrestling tapes on to that!

Amazingly we get a load of ECW releases on DVD here in the UK. Everything from Holiday Hell 1995 to Path Of Destruction and every PPV inbetween. Do you guys not get them? Actually a some of them are region 0 and play on any DVD player and of course if you have an player that can play region 2 DVD's then you could import them from the UK.

I believe VHS will eventually be phased out (just like a music cassette) because it's videotape. It's fragile and unreliable IMO.

But I think what people really need to worry about is to save for a HDTV. The american government has ordered that all TV signals form 2006 on MUST be HD. And in case you didn't know, if you happen to have a regular TV and try to catch a HD signal all you'll see is...nothing. So I think that's the real long-term investment to make.

If regular television is gonna be phased out in 2006, then all the Television manufcaturers should stop making 4:3 ratio televisions and go widescreen. Movie distributors should also stop worrying about the soccer moms who want DVDs in full screen also.

With DVDs getting full screen releases and big screen TVs still being made square, I don't think HDTV is ever gonna launch properly.

You'll be able to record your VHS tapes onto DVD before you know it so you won't have any problems in the future of no VHS.

Home DVD recorders currently exist but they are on the $1500 new technology/test market level for now. Within 3 years home DVD recorders and recordable DVD discs will be affordable and common place with the general pulbic.
