There are no mandatory basslines one needs to know outside of the basics. But start playing the intro to "Peace Sells" (Megadeth) to some metalheads and you'll get a good reaction...

Nah, I can think of some essential basslines. N.I.B. comes to mind. Isn't as hard as it sounds, either. (The intro, that is) Too Many Puppies by Primus should be in the first 10 songs a bass player should learn, that way, they can say, "Check it out, I know some Primus." It is also mandatory that every bass player must try "Is It Luck" at least once and then get frustrated, smoke a cigarette, then play something easier.

heh. I tell people i'm a bass player and that primus is one of my fave bands, and they're all like 'whoa man you gotta play that stuff!!' so i just play the toys go winding down or the air is getting slippery or something. I love playing rancid songs too.

When your in an emo/hardcore band that takes alot of influence from these bands, you tend to know alot of the songs. Do I like emo? Yes, but I don't limit myself to it. I also like bands like Candiria, Shai Halud, and Heroin, aside from the Thursday/Taking Back Sunday kind of music

Candiria are one of the worst bands I have ever heard in my life. Decent music for most of their death-ish songs, but once they try to growl...ugh. Oh, and don't get me started on their rap-ish songs, because I can't stand the guitar work at ALL in those songs. I mean, it's mostly just palm-muted E chords...I've played some easy shit, but not like that!

I can't play bass but I know how to play Black Sabbath's "Paranoid". A friend of mine thought me, and it's so damn easy I think anybody could play it.
