Guest O.J. Hart Report post Posted August 8, 2002 I hate Band Camp and just plain being in drum line. I'm in my first year of High School Band and I just can't do it. I'm not into like I thought I would be. My section leader just hates me and she bitches at me constantly because I can't march too good in my first ever time marching. I just can't do it. Our Drum Instructor is having us learn all new stuff and play with a new technique and evryone is used to the technique we've been using since we were in 5th grade. I know I sound bitchy but i just can't do it. My playing is pretty good for a first year player, but i can't march and play music at the same time. I get out of step and out of line. I might consider going to the pit which hardly marches, only when they go over to the sideline to get evrything set for the performance. Please don't bash me because of this. Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Report post Posted August 8, 2002 So......there-was-this-one-time-at-Band-Camp,and-you-didn't know-how-to-play-the-Drums? "My-name-is-Petey-and-I-have-Big-Balls!"
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Im sorry, I won't say anything. But Im sure that you've opened the proverbial can of worms on the whole "Band Camp" thing. I mean, its easier than saying something about Lex Luger sucking to LexLugerRules..
Guest O.J. Hart Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Petey? Who's that?
Guest mesepher Report post Posted August 8, 2002 it gets easier to march and play at the same time once you get some practice at it... pretty soon you'll be able to march without concentrating onwhat foot is on what beat. try keeping time with your feet, that should help. left on the 1 and 3 beats... right on the 2 and

Guest Daredevil21 Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Where you at O.J.? Our drumline used to fuckin own, but then we lost all of our instructors and we've been rebuilding since last year. Marching is kinda tough, especially when you're playing something, but I got the hang of it for the most part. Don't worry about your section leader, bitches be trippin, but it's sorta their job to keep the line in check. I've been lucky since all our leaders since I've been here have been some of the nicest people in the line. Pit's alright, but if you don't have much talent with all of the keyboards (marimbas, vibes and such), you may end up on something shitty like accessories. My one friend has been on accessories since freshman year for no other real reason than he just pretty much sucks. Yeah, but just keep with it. If you're new to it, then you shouldn't worry so much. You'll get it.
Guest O.J. Hart Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Thanks for the support DareDevil, but the older kids (juniors and senoirs) have been getting on me since day 1 of band camp and don't realize this is only my first year and them bitching to me and getting on my case for 10 hours a day doesn't help. God, i miss middle school.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted August 8, 2002 I wasnt in Band, but when I was in 7th grade, I was in Chorus, and I cannot carry a tune in a rubber bucket now, but I managed to do my best and got A's anyway cause the teacher felt sorry for me. But anyway..
Guest Kingpk Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Welcome to high school band. My first year was a mess, we REALLY sucked. Then the instructor quit and we got as close to a drill instructor you can get as the new director. We won 1st in parade and field show the next 3 years in every competiton we were in and last I heard they took 1st in every one since I graduated.
Guest Daredevil21 Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Well, it's sort of a tradition to give the n00bs of the drumline/band a hard time. It differs, cause different people respond different ways. Some just joke around and act like asses, but they let you know it's all good in fun. Others however, take this "torment the n00b" thing way too seriously and cross the line of messing around and being a total dick. I wasn't in the the drumline or band my freshmen year, and I am somewhat happy, since this senior absolutely tormented almost all freshmen in the drumline. He was going into the army and would just treat everyone in the bassline (he was the section leader for that) like shit. They would mess up one thing and he'd punch them hard in the arm everytime. It was cool when I joined though, since all the seniors we're real mellow cept one bitch, but hey, we all know what they do. Anyway, hang with it. It may be hard and a bit intimidating for a while, but it'll mellow out. And what location are you at O.J.? Does your line compete or anything?
Guest O.J. Hart Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Yea, we compete. We are in Washington County in Pennsylvania. Our first parade is the county fair next week and i'm so dmn nervous we're gonna lose cause of me and everyone will hate me. I can't sleep tonight because of it. It's 2:30 and I'm wide awake scared like shit.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted August 8, 2002 hmm... Relating chorus to band...I knew I sucked bad at our first performance, everyone else knew I sucked, and we finished 2nd, and everyone was mad at me, and I was mad at myself, and I was gonna quit, but then at the last second I said to hell with what everyone thought about the way I sang and went on singing. We never won anything that year (first year in the schools someodd year chorus history) but I didnt care.. Its not like I was the SOLE reason for us not winning..I still got A's (then again everyone got A's as long as they showed up for all practices and performances...) Guest Daredevil21 Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Actually I meant does your drumline only compete? They have some organizations for those things like WGI. That's what we did (and are still gonna do, I suppose). It's like a "winterline" type of thing.
