Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted August 8, 2002 I've never understood why U2 were/are so amazing. Aside from all the charity work they do i've never thought much of em as a band. And whilst i like the strokes, hives and white stripes, all are very overrated.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted August 8, 2002 I like the White Stripes, but, having heard the Strokes' Is This It and the Hives' Veni Vidi Viscious and be put into a coma by both, I will say they are definitely overrated.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted August 8, 2002 I've never understood why U2 were/are so amazing. Aside from all the charity work they do i've never thought much of em as a band. And whilst i like the strokes, hives and white stripes, all are very overrated. Any group who can put out The Joshua Tree and then come back 4 years later with Achtung Baby impresses the hell out of me. I'd have to say that, in terms of totally and utterly changing their sound, style, and product, U2 has been the most successful right-off-the-bat band. They're one of my absolute favorites because they've been putting out damn good music for 20 years, and once you get to Joshua Tree, everything beyond is a different sound. As a band, they come together amazingly...no one remembers U2 for guitar solos or crazy rhythm section breakdowns, but I'll be damned if that music doesn't gel ridiculously well. Hence my case for them not being overrated...perhaps recently, because all the acclaim they've gotten for All That You Can't Leave Behind is a bit much, but altogether, nah. Who do I think is overrated...the latest surprise to me was The Flaming Lips. Maybe it was just the hype of "oh my GOD best album of the decade" getting to me, but I went down to the record store and gave The Soft Bulletin a listen. All-right chamber pop about scientists and motion...but not exactly brilliant. Felt quite hollow to me.
Guest NazMistry Report post Posted August 8, 2002 I'll agree with U2 being overrated. I don't understand why so many proclaim them to be one of the all time greats. I like HMKMTMKM, Sweetest Thing, and Beautiful Day has a place in my heart now because of Bob Barron's lyrics, but nothing else by U2 has struck me as being better than average. Wu-Tang for me are overrated, there is far better Rap out there. Oasis are overrated as well, plus Liam and Noel are idiots.

Guest godthedog Report post Posted August 8, 2002 yeah, you're gonna get flamed for that. let's see, who's overrated: U2: been going downhill after 'achtung baby' (especially with that piece of shit 'pop'), and nobody in the media has seemed to catch on. these guys, especially bono, have the single most overinflated sense of importance in the music industry. grateful dead: not a good band, not a good band, not a good band. i have yet to hear an enjoyable song by them. and they're not on any of the woodstock compilations because they were stoned out of their minds while playing, and sucked. oasis: okay, i take it back: THESE GUYS have the most overinflated sense of importance in the music industry. when your lead vocalist says his songs are as good as anything john fucking lennon ever wrote, you need an ego check. if they weren't constantly comparing themselves to the greatest band ever, they'd just be another throwaway group and i could ignore them. but since they seem to think "if this was 1966, we'd be the beatles," i feel a certain need to put them in their place. if this was 1966, they'd be fucking strawberry alarm clock, okay? what new musical ground have these drunken egomaniacs broken? in what new ways have they used the studio? how have they changed the way albums were made? everyone in britain seems to cream all over them, but outside the u.k., NOBODY CARES. JUST MAKE YOUR CRAPPY LITTLE ROCK MUSIC AND SHUT UP. aerosmith: when did they become america's greatest band? did i miss the meeting where everyone said "okay, they basically make throwaway party rock music & they've done the exact same thing for over 20 years, but they've been around a long time and sold a lot of records, so they're now officially america's greatest band"? what suddenly made these guys better than the velvet underground, the doors, talking heads, pearl jam, nirvana, the pixies, ween, r.e.m. and tool? did aerosmith try something different, important and revolutionary while i wasn't looking? Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted August 8, 2002 i'd agree with Edwin about U2. There is no one member outstanding in the band, but the band has moulded together to make on of the better bands around. Overrated hardly, but they have got their recongnition that they can still produce kick ass music. i'd say Deep Purple and Grateful Dead are overrated
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted August 8, 2002 The Doors are overrated beyond belief. Much like Led Zeppelin, I can see where they broke ground, and there has yet to be a band that sounds like them. But also like Led Zeppelin, the music makes me change the radio station or walk away from a party if I hear it. Sorry, but the band's overrated.
Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Sex Pistols...They're basically revered as one of best punk bands of the '70s, but in reality they suck. I mean, most of their songs are throwaway crap save for "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the UK". Ramones own them. Tool. Overrated & Boring. Musical geniuses, my ass. The only band that can cure insomnia. Aerosmith is really overrated as well. Everyone of their songs sounds the same.
Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted August 8, 2002 I concur with the Zeppelin vote, although I respect them in the sense of musical history. I find the Beatles to be incredibly underwhelming. Radiohead is overrated to the point of insanity; I like The Bends, but it isn't great, and it's still better than OK Computer. As for U2...they were the first band I loved when I began branching outside of metal in early 1992, and it was not because of The Joshua Tree , an album I find to be overrated to the extreme. War and Rattle & Hum were what did it for me, although I enjoyed all of their stuff. That is all.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted August 8, 2002 i love tool, but they are definitely a love or hate situation i'll accept that. I second oasis, and the doors. and muse, they just piss me off royally.

Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted August 8, 2002 No, Oasis rule. Overrated would be Nickelback and RHCP. i think oasis have just turned into a self parody, with all the songs sounding even more indistinguishable than they did already. I definitely agree with nickelback tho. Horrible. As are 'A' who all the nu metal twats here in england are sucking the cocks of right now. They are a joke. Guest godthedog Report post Posted August 8, 2002 No, Oasis rule. Overrated would be Nickelback and RHCP. if you dig the music, it's kind of catchy & that's fine, but...how does one defend their egos and comparisons to the beatles?

Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Tool. Overrated & Boring. Musical geniuses, my ass. The only band that can cure insomnia. *best D-von voice I can muster* Oh my brotha! Testifyyyy!!!!! Nirvana is The Most overrated band of all time Nevermind kicked ass...other then that there were average at best...if Eddie Vedder killed himself before Kurt then Pearl Jam would be this huge legendary band, not Nirvana. I use to be into Nirvana...now I just get pissed that this asshole is reveared as the greatest songwriter ever and all that...he's not. And as soon as the a-hole killed himself "Smells like Teen Spirit" gets voted the greatest video of all time???? My ass

Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Oasis is not overrated, and their egos just do not need to be justified. That Liam Gallagher is a fucking prick is one of the things I like about this band. But their songs are good and catchy. I don't care how they stack up against the Beatles, who *are* overrated though still a good band. U2 is overrated as all fuck. Except I don't know anyone who likes them, except balding thirty somethings who are starting to acquire a paunch. Still overrated though. Most of the other bands mentioned in this thread are overrated as well except for Nirvana, and arguably Wu Tang and the Flaming Lips. I'd like to throw Weezer into the mix as well. Pinkerton is *the* overrated 90's album.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted August 8, 2002 i agree with Radiohead. how can you say the guy is a masterful singer when he basically just whines his way through the song
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted August 8, 2002 To me Radiohead is only technically overrated. I like them a lot, but yeah they're overrated.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Wow, I agree with a lot of the bands listed here so far: Led Zeppelin The Doors Flaming Lips The Strokes Weezer And then my personal picks: Jay Z The Smashing Pumpkins Destiny's Child / Beyonce (lump 'em in with Britney, as far as I'm concerned)

Guest cartman Report post Posted August 8, 2002 Ok of ALL the anality going on in this thread how can anyone say the beetles are overrated? They played just about every genre of music there is. I especially love anyone under like 30 saying they are overrated...THAT impresses me.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted August 9, 2002 Ahhhhhh U2 hate- I basically with everything Edwin pretty much said. Except for Mysterious Ways and the DVD version of Beautiful Day no guitar riff ever really stands out but the songs just kicks ton ofs ass. And I'm glad I could make Beautiful Day more accessible to fans. :-) U2 RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted August 9, 2002 Oasis is not overrated I don't like Oasis, but I wouldn't call them overrated. If anything, they're underrated, as they're usually trashed for being Beatles rip-offs.

Still overrated though. Most of the other bands mentioned in this thread are overrated as well except for Nirvana, and arguably Wu Tang and the Flaming Lips. I'd like to throw Weezer into the mix as well. Pinkerton is *the* overrated 90's album. But I'm 19 and not paunchy...oh well. When I saw them on the Elevation Tour last year, the crowd was quite the mixture. A good amount of 30 and 40somethings, but well over half the crowd had youth on their side. "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation" really seemed to do well with "the kids." On the Pinkerton issue...I'll defend that album till the day I die. Honest, gritty rock, but the huuuuuuuuge difference between Pinkerton and what most people consider "emo" is that it has WIT, by god. Earnest songwriting, great solos, and genuine wit and charm = a-okay in my book. Since then, Weezer's output has been all right, but unexceptional...Green was a good pop record, but nothing too amazing, and Maladroit has a few amazing bright spots amidst a wealth of otherwise entirely average stuff. I wouldn't call *that* overrated though, since those last two albums have never really been regarded as the second coming of Geek Christ anyway.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted August 9, 2002 U2 eh whatever. I just don't see it, but there's not much point in arguing taste. As far as Pinkerton goes, I think it's a pretty nice album. I'd give it a 6 on a 10 point scale. There are some songs on there that I enjoy a lot, particularly "tired of sex" and "why bother?" But the rest of the songs seem pretty mediocre to me. And for some reason, there's something about that album, where I just feel like I'm listening to the same song over and over again. Personally I like the blue album a little better, but not much better. I just enjoy it top to bottom more. Admittedly neither the Green Album nor Maladroit are particularly overrated depending on who you talk to, but I just feel like Weezer viewed in composite is overrated.
