overrated bands

Recommended Posts

Guest mesepher
i don't really think that Led Zeppelin in a whole is overrated its just Robert Plant and Jimmy Page are

how is Robert Plant overrated? Have you heard his solo stuff... my goodness its awful. His latest release is actually pretty good though.

as far as singing... he does sing rather well. and still can pull it off to this day.

I agree with Radiohead, Metallica, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers (even though I like 'em, they're really nothing special), Weezer, and... ummm... who hasn't been listed yet, how about Deep Purple, Eminem and Beastie Boys.

Radiohead is quite obviously overrated, if only because no band could possibly live up to the sort of hype that they have. The same goes for The Strokes--which is totally beyond me, given that their album is pretty average faux garage rock. But when you have major publications proclaiming you the savior of rock and roll...how could you not be overrated.

I definitely agree with RHCP, as I've never seen what the big deal with them is. Also, Pavement is hella overrated: their first two albums were great, but everything else was spotty at best.

Good lord, how can I overlook the Beastie Boys when talking about overrated bands? Up until a few years ago, I tried and tried to see what everyone else saw in them, but to no avail.

I greatly enjoy age being a factor in thinking the Beatles are overrated. Tremendous. Anyway, as with Zeppelin, I respect their place in musical history, but they are incredibly overrated, IMO.

I agree with Nirvana. Can't believe I didn't mention them; I really, really hated them for a long time. Now I just don't care. Average band, end of story.

Pinkerton is amazing. The rest of Weezer's output is unspectacular.

That is all.

I know I'm in the minority on Pinkerton, but what's amazing about it? The xylophone? I just don't see what's so great about that album. It's as unspectacular as all of their other releases from where I sit.

I agree on both bands, but probably for different reasons on Pavement. In my opinion, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is the hella overrated album. I think both slanted & enchanted and wowee zowee are actually better albums, while their remaining output gets panned where they deserve it, and praised where they deserve it, in my ever arrogant opinion.

I might not be the most qualified person to answer this, as I know shit about what really makes good music vs. bad music, but rather just know what I like. However, I would say that what makes Pinkerton stand out head and shoulders above Weezer's other works is EMOTION.

Most of the songs on the album are charged to the max with Rivers's personal feelings, and I as well as many others can FEEL that when we listen to the album and in some cases empathize, and this brings about (to me at least) a very cathartic feeling.

Compared to the Blue/Green/some of Maladroit stuff that's just impersonal banter usually (but I still really like it), Pinkerton is just so much more REAL and RAW.

That's my best guess. One of my 5 favorite albums, at least.

<_< How exactly is Metallica 'over-rated'?

I'd consider an over-rated band to be one that has some sort of gimmick, and dosen't really do anything.

Like Tool. :)

Beatles are the most overrated band ever, followed by Dave Matthews, Metallica, Weezer (Who I would like to beat up, just because I know I could) Oasis (who SUCKS), and all these new lame re-garage rock bands coming out that need to go away faster than that neo-swing jazz crap everyone was all about a few years back.

Tool has a gimmick?

You can certainly not like them, but when I think "gimmick," I think something more along the lines of Gwar, i.e. We Wear Big Silly Costumes, or the Hives, i.e. Look, We Have Funny Names And Ape Mick Jaggar.

I suppose writing alternately about suffocation in society and spiritual transcendence could be a gimmick, buuuuut...no.

I know I'm in the minority on Pinkerton, but what's amazing about it? The xylophone? I just don't see what's so great about that album. It's as unspectacular as all of their other releases from where I sit.

For me, it's the stuff I mentioned in my first post. At least, those are my analytical, break-it-down reasons for liking the album. On a more basic level, I love it. It's earnest and personal, and easy to connect to--not in the "Oh my god I'm just like him I'm gonna go cry into my tea now over a girl" sense that one can typically get from 'personal' songwriting, but in the sense that it's so specific and subtly charming through all its depressing trudge. I'll take the honest and smirkingly confessional tone of "El Scorcho" over a standard "Baby! I'm so emmmmmmmpty! Come back toooo meeeee! Yeah yeah yeah!" any day.

Also, I think the Blue album is another bit of Weezer output that is pretty damn impeccable. The similar unique, specific earnestness is here too, but in a much lighter vein and a pretty much perfect pop record. 40 minutes, 10 songs, no filler, and sing-along charm to last forever. I maintain that early Weezer has some of the most memorable and just plain fun song structures I've heard in all music. Just a defense in advance, I guess, but I've never heard anyone really call that album overrated, so.

Guns N Roses are overrated as well

Very much so. I'm tired of people saying good things about them.

I like the Blue album, more than Pinkerton actually, just cause I think it's solid from top to bottom, unlike Pinkerton. Plus there seems to be more variation on the Blue album than Pinkerton, at least to me anyway. If Pinkerton means a lot to people emotionally, than I can understand that, but personally it doesn't strike me in any profound or subtle way any more than A LOT of other albums do , except for "Why Bother." So that's that. Nevertheless, there are some embarassing lyrical moments on this album. You all know it.

I know. But I'll bash U2 twice as much as the whole lot of 'em combined if I can.

Ok of ALL the anality going on in this thread how can anyone say the beetles are overrated? They played just about every genre of music there is.

I especially love anyone under like 30 saying they are overrated...THAT impresses me.

i've learned that 99 times out of 100, when somebody says 'the beatles suck' or 'the beatles are so overrated' it's out of sheer ignorance. VERY few people i know dislike them after having heard their catalog (or just 2 or 3 albums), and they can't be judged just by what is heard on the radio, because most of what makes so many people think they're so great doesn't get played on the radio. so i usually just let it go.

I think Pinkerton is solid all the way through, also. Additionally, I just think the songs are better than on the first album. *shrug*

99 times out of 100, the people who say things like that say them out of sheer arrogance and a sense of superiority. I have heard over 75% of the Beatles' catalogue, and I remain unimpressed. When two of your best friends, and your brother, are huge Beatles fans, you're going to hear a lot of their stuff. I like a few songs here and there, but I simply cannot get into them.

Including yours. Please, continue to make blanket statements about people you know nothing about; it builds character.

That is all.

The proof that the Beatles are somewhat overrated? That their fans can be that fucking haughty about them. There are few other bands in the history of music, who you just *have* to think is the greatest band ever or else you're "ignorant."

Whatever. I actually like the beatles. And I understand why they're a band that most people can agree on. But they *are* overrated. Just saying something is overrated does not mean you are trashing it or insulting it either.

To be honest, I can't see Pinkerton being overrated when most magazine publications picked it as the WORST album of the year. On top of that, I hate most of the new "Garage" bands coming out now. I can't stand the Strokes, nor can I stand all of their counterparts. Last Nite has to be the worst mainstream song of the year IMO.

It's not 1996 anymore though, and there are a hell of a lot of people running around pimping Pinkerton. It may be their least commercially successful album, but as of today, it's their most critically acclaimed.

As far as the beatles go, I've heard the entirety of the following. Hard Days Night, Revolver, White Album, Sgt. Pepper's, and Rubber Soul. To my understanding, that's said to pretty much encompass their different sounds fairly well. I can understand why people enjoy them so much, but I wouldn't consider them the greatest of all time by any means. They wrote good songs, and influenced a lot of better musicians. That's as much as I can say for them, I'm a discriminating elitist metalhead however, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, as i don't like ANYTHING. It's true, I don't. There's seriously about two dozen bands outside the realm of metal I listen to. In fact, I don't even like the majority of metal. I can respect talent anywhere, whether it's Junior Brown, Howlin' Wolf, Bach, or Steve Vai. There's just a very very thin black line of stuff I actually enjoy listening to. Most of their logos are hard to read, too. But I digress..

Beatles. Good songs people liked. Average technical talent. Right place, right time. When considered the best ever, that makes them overrated.
