Help me make a decision

I really like import games, but since the PS2 came along I haven't been able to really get any without these two options.

 

1. Take a chance with a modchip and screw up the machine for all eternity.

 

or

 

2. Buy a Japanese PS2

 

Which should I do?

I'd buy a japanese PS2, because if you break the other, then you won't even be able to play U.S. games.
