Underated Bands

Recommended Posts

Guest BionicRedneck

Well, there is an overated thread...

So, who are the most underated bands/artists...

IMO, its Alice In Chains,or Soundgarden, simply because Nirvana got all their publicity.

Maybe Soundgarden, but Alice in Chains is pretty well-known and fairly renowned. I was never a big Soundgarden fan, but Alice in Chains definitely put out some good stuff while they were around (I used to say they were the only good thing to come out of grunge).

I think Bush is an underrated band. Sure they've had some really popular songs, but even though they're not a GREAT band, they're a lot better than most people give them credit for.

Rush seemed to get pooped on by the media for some strange reason... yet they are one of the most technical bands out there.

Blue Oyster Cult is recognized for three songs (two of which are very bad) when in reallity they have several awesome albums, and still rock harder than ever to this day.

Frank Zappa has been overlooked partially due to the extreme nature of his lyrics... sadly... FZ ruled and proved he could do more than just wail on a guitar...

Acid Bath is fuckin' killer. I agree with Zappa and Rush. No one seems to have heard of X-Cops outside of die-hard GWAR fans, they've got some AWESOME stuff, heavier than most of GWAR, but still sick. Deep Purple doesn't nearly get the credit they deserve, as well as Ten Years After.

I know for a FACT that I will get flamed for this, but I actually think that Incubus doesn't get the love it deserves, because it tends to be softer or whatever, I don't know. Morning View overall is much better than Make Yourself, which was pretty good on its own. On top of that, I don't think Incubus has put out the best album that they could put out just yet. But that's just me. I could understand why most metalheads dislike them. Hell, most metalheads dislike most metal since they are so elitist, but that's just me ranting, making, not a bias, but a very accurate generalization...

i don't think Incubis is underrated at all nor overrated. they are getting the recongnition that they deserve, and yes I think Incubis can pull out on hell of an album

Megadeth I find is underrated, and is usually compaired to Metallica...

Screaming Trees: They never really found the same recognition other Seattle bands achieved in the early 90's and they never became grunge icons. Mark Lanegan was comfortably the best vocalist of any Seattle band of the era and their sound was a great mix of power and grace.

Mark Lanegan: One of the most underappreciated solo artists around, his first couple of albums came out when Screaming Trees were still around and after their split he is up to album number 5. More of a quieter and low key folk/blues type sound than a 'rock' sound. Definately someone who deserves more recognition, much like his former band.

Holy shit i'd forgot about screaming trees! i have 'dust' and yes it's damn good!

Soundgarden are twice the band nirvana were IMO. absolutely LOVE them.

And melvins. Stag shows how many different sounds they are capable of producing, and electroretard has some absolutely mind blowing effects on it. They rule.

Sparklehorse. Have made 3 immensely beautiful albums. Should be huge. Kinda glad they're not.

Third Eye Blind. Most people tend dismiss them as "just another alternative pop-rock band with a huge hit." These people also tend to not notice Stephan Jenkins brilliant, poetic lyrics and perfect pop hooks. Sure, "Semi-Charmed Life" was played to the point where I want to scratch my eyes out when I hear it, but the rest of their stuff is GREAT.

As I always say in these "underrated" threads...

STUCK MOJO. This band was doing the fusion of rap and pure heavy metal/hardcore music since 1993, adding in funk elements, and rounded it all out with lyrics ranging from social satire, to music industry satire, to political, to all-out party lyrics. Sadly, the band broke up in 2001, but they are still among my favorite bands of all-time.

I love Sparklehorse as well, along with Wilco and Low they are probably one of my favourite bands to have emerged from the mid 90's onwards.

If Nirvana are the Beatles of the grunge era then Soundgarden must be the Stones. 'Badmotorfinger' still sounds fresher and less samey than much of AIC or Pearl Jam to me. They were good bands as well but I felt Soundgarden just had a little something extra.

Monster Magnet deserve a mention as well, Kyuss maybe the ultimate cult band of 90's stoner rock but Magnet were the total package. 'Spine Of God' is an absolute classic but is probably more of a cult album revered by a select few rather than everyone, their other stuff is equally enjoyable.

I stopped reading Kerrang! years ago but I'm sure they were wise enough to vote 'Badmotorfinger', 'Dust' and 'Powertrip' the best albums of their respective years.

Got to mention Gorkys Zygotic Mynci in here also because they just don't really sound like anyone else and they will never quite gain any mainstream acclaim because they're just too damn quirky for their own good in that regard.

underrated? outside of canada, no one seems to appreciate/accept the tragically hip. awesome live band.

i also think pj harvey doesn't get the mainstream love she deserves.

The Pixies: While people around here seem to like them, they don't get enough credit for everything they did, all of their stuff sounds just as good today, as it did when it came out.

And I always preferred Gluey Porch Treatments over Stag.

velvet underground. they've got some diehard cult fans & influenced a LOT of music since, but never get any real respect or recognition. ditto for the pixies, but not to the extent of the VU, so they're a close second.

Im surprised nobody has said Pearl Jam yet. They deserve a hell of alot more recognition then they get now. They played just as big as a part of the grunge movement that Nirvana did as did Soundgarden by the way whom I feel are very underrated as well and dont get the recognition they deserve. Hell Pearl Jam are the only band that is still around! Theyve been around for 13 years and still going strong. Their' cult following of fans is just unreal and very very loyal and most important they havent sold out yet. Please dont gimmie that bs of releasing a whole tour on cd is selling out because its not. Oh yah and fuck Nirvana

In that same vein, how come no one has ever heard Snot? Nu metal and rap rock owe their very existence to this band. Sure, Strait Up was wretched, albeit a nice gesture, but Snot would've been HUGE had Lynn Strait not died.

As far as Pearl Jam goes, I'd consider them one of the most OVERrated, as opposed to the other way around.

Definitely the pixies, and frank black's solo stuff doesn't get the respect it deserves cos it'll always be compared to the pixies, and it's pretty much a different style of music anyway. I can see why you could prefer gluey porch treatments over stag, it's so goddamn raw. Course, i'm only human and i still find it a bit difficult. But then i have the reissue with all the garage demos on as well, that's probably why.

Motorhead, without a doubt. In a perfect world, they would be mentioned alongside Metallica, Sabbath, and Maiden as metal gods.

Mike Patton. He was doing the Nu-Metal thing back in '89, and was doing it well, before it became shit in the past 3 or 4 years. A great voice, and is in like 786876 bands right now.

This is true. My favorite Third Eye Blind song is actually "Slow Motion", a bone-chilling track that's probably not appreciated by ANYONE who bought the album based on the singles, and the people who would appreciate it probably wouldn't buy the album based on the singles. Ahh... to be young and in pop rock...

Whatever happened to Third Eye Blind anyway? I haven't heard anything about 'em since Blue.
