Guest Kibagami Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Okay. I've got a bit of a dilemma with Silent's no-selling. I gave him 10 vitality for a reason- I want the character to be as LEAST as resilient as old-school Kane, back in '98 when he first debuted. The trouble is, the only really effective way to get stamina like that over without constantly disrupting the flow of my matches is by no-selling big signature moves, and more than a few finishers... The trouble is this. Kicking out of finishers doesn't go over really well in the SWF, unless there's a storyline involved, a particularly important match, or both writers have agreed on it beforehand. This said, do you guys think, as a whole, that Silent no-selling finishers like Kane used to from time to time would detract from your characters, or do you think it's a decent way to preserve the flow of a match while still getting Silent's vitality and general weirdness over? Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted August 11, 2002 If you do it well, it won't. The important thing would be to put it over in the commentary: it's not that the finishers are weak, it's that Silent is frickin' tough. IE: "SPINAL TAP! SPINAL TAP! EDWIN HIT THE SPINAL TAP!" And Silent sits up. "What the hell?" cries Stevens. "That was Edwin's finisher, and Silent just--SPINAL TAP AGAIN! EDWIN HIT HIM AGAIN!--here's the COVER! WHEE!" ONE! TWO! TH--AND SILENT KICKS OUT COMFORTABLY. "My god! Silent is the toughest sumbitch here! What a hoss!" ...uh...okay. Maybe that wasn't the best example. But you couldn't do it a lot, because it would suck to have everyone's finisher busted down. It's something for high-profile matches...I think you'd be best off totally ignoring a few signature moves, i.e. walking right through them with a little bit of dizziness, and only actually no-selling the finishers when you've got a really big stage and it's really, really important. As a writer I'd be much less bothered if you no-sold a delayed German suplex, a dragon sleeper Russian legsweep, and only started to get dizzy after two full Midnight Specials and a half-dozen palm strikes then blew through the Union Jack with a wink and a smile. Guest Renegade Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Well to be honest, if your were taller I wouldnt find it as strange. 6'5'' seems a bit short for a no seller. You are still 6'5'' right? Anyways I dunno, I'm not fond at no selling finishers on a general basis, but then again who the hell am I to tell you.
Guest TheBostonStrangler Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Well, Renegade, you have more wins in the WF than Silent does... *runs away before Silent slits his throat* But seriously, I think Eddie made good points. Take my moveset, for example. If you no-sold my chokeslam and double-armed DDT, that wouldn't be a big deal. They are high-impact power moves, but you're a tough guy. But if you no-sold my finisher, then that would be an issue, unless this is a really big match. Personally, I don't like it, but your character calls for it, so go for it. Guest Kibagami Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Hmmm. Good points all. I suppose I shall limit my no-selling to signatures for now, until I get a better feel for what and where it's appropriate. Of course, I'm going to no-sell a JD's Revenge onto a burning, thumbtack-covered table that's wrapped in barbed wire no matter what. Since, you know, I'm so likely to win and all. Urk. S. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Yeah, I think it depends on finisher too...I mean, Strangler's finisher is a fricking press slam into a Death Valley Driver. That's just NASTY. For someone who uses a tornado stunner like me, or maybe a moonsault or some other high-flying move, something less impactful...still done sparingly, but obviously not as major. Guest Kibagami Report post Posted August 11, 2002 And it's just rude, besides. ::made up that finisher, by the way:: Yeah. S.
Guest HVilleThugg Report post Posted August 11, 2002 All you need to do Silent is get someone to go and grab my old JL matches. I no sold everything...and I think I did it effectively. Well, at least no one got mad when I did it. Although, I had the benefit of working with a huge character....the no selling thing is just harder to make believable with a guy who's only 6'5" and not over 300 pounds (you're under 300, right?). It's all about build...you have to build to the no sell. And you have to make it huge...like, don't just casually no sell things. When you no sell a finisher, it should be a huge deal. Also...and I think this is something you do a good job of already, you can get your no selling over in the beginning of the match. You start the match no selling punches and clotheslines and stuff like that. Then, you start to take over the match, at which point you start selling things. No selling finishers is tough...but when you do it, TIME IS THE KEY! For instance... Edwin hits the Encore Cross on Silent... Edwin doesn't cover, but instaed heads over to the top rope to do something or other... He plays with the crowd a bit (which he is known to do), and then he climbs. Silent looks completely dead, and the announcers are selling it as such... Edwin goes up, leaps....and while Edwin is in mid air, SIlent shoots up Kane style! The announcers and the fans go completely apeshit... Then SIlent grabs edwin and goes on with the match... The time is what makes the no selling more believable and still holds true to your character's tough as nails nature. It gives time to make it more believable, but it also makes you think that maybe silent was faking the whole time, which keeps your image. The whole thing is tough and go...it's gotta work in your match. If it doesn't flow and it's not built right, it's going to suck... Keyword....TIME! Da "no selling genius" H
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted August 11, 2002 I just want it to be known that if Frost and Silent ever meet up, I'm going to no sell everything and it will be like watching Hawk wrestle Nikita Koloff. Or maybe just to be funny I'll have both guys sell everything like (as Scott Keith would say) "Shane McMahon with a super ball up his ass."
Guest Beingz0wningj00 Report post Posted August 11, 2002 No worries Silent... I have a few surprises for you, this Smarkdown! *muah ha*
Guest BA_Baracus Report post Posted August 11, 2002 PROMO (Stubby P. McWeed); "Kane sucks. Try emulating a wrestler who isn't a pile of crap Silent. Mothernature says, good idea..."
Guest SupaTaft Report post Posted August 12, 2002 You have vitality 10, you shouldn't sell anything. Z has a vitality of like 7 and he takes unbelieveable beatings. You have three more points than him, you shouldn't sell anything less than someone's finisher at least 2 times. Or both of their finishers, and hype it up tremendously. You should seriously not sell for anything. You get thrown out of the ring. You no-sell. You get the steps crashed into your skull. You no-sell. You fall from the ceiling. You wait three seconds... then no-sell. 10 vitality is that for a reason. -Taft
Guest Lerrin Breggan Report post Posted August 13, 2002 Hah, get in the ring with me and I'll make you sell. I guarantee that one!

Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted August 13, 2002 Vitality of 10? Silent, your gimmick match should be the No Holds Sold Match; First to sell a move loses. Kinda like Taker/Kane vs Kronik but...wait that match sucked thirty-two flavours of shiitake, so uh... just no sell lots. ::dramatically oversells the phantom punch::
