Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Why the hell do some people actually go to pre-season games and cheer and get exited if something happens. The game means absolutely nothing and people still cheer like Rubes. Since season ticket holders are forced to pay for the 2 pre-season games I understand going but why are you cheering like it's the regular season. It should also be mentioned that Jamir Miller. The Pro-Bowl LB for Cleveland has a torn ACL. Arizona played a pre-season game at the MetroDump a few years back and something like 4 guys had series injuries. Rob Moore's never recovered and his career is basically finished.
Guest Bloodice Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Pre-season is a double edge sword. You either are 1)as good as you were in pre season or 2)a joke the redskins had a great outing and i think they have a team to go 11-5 it all depends on how the team gels. While pre season doesn't make your year it gives a good indication
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted August 11, 2002 The Redskins need the preason to get in sync inb terms of play calling (on both sides of the ball). The fact that they've scored 38 and 37 points in 2 games (which they've won) shows the offense is clicking (its basically between Weurffel and Matthews at QB, but either one is gonna put up huge #'s it looks like). The defense is a bit fuzzy. They had an outstanding outting against the 49ers even though most of the game was against backups. However, against the panthers, it looked like they needed a bit more work and practice. If both sides of the ball click at the same time for most of the season, the Redskins will easily make the playoffs. The only other team that can contend with the Redskins in the NFC East is the Eagles, and very few people are sold on them having a good of a year as last year. There is really only one big obstacle the Redskins need to deal with to make the playoffs : The Dallas Cowboys. (Skins have lost 9 straight to Dallas, which is really, really really sad..) The Redskins cannot afford even one loss to Dallas this year.
Guest Bloodice Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Even though i have family that plays in dallas (jeff robinson) i think the boys are 7-9 at best if that the skins will do just fine under spurrier and they have a good set up defense needs work but they'll be a contender
Guest DrTom Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Vern, I'll agree that the NFL plays too many preseason games. Considering how many guys have gotten hurt in exhibition games the past few years, I think they could cut back to 3 games and be fine. Teams are still going to practice and run scrimmages, and 3 preseason games should be enough for a team to come together. NFL teams play 4 (sometimes 5) preseason games. If baseball did the same thing, their teams would play about 50 preseason games each. There's just no point in it after a while. You've learned what you came to learn, you've decided what you came to decide, and anything above that is just asking for injuries that skew your knowledge and decisions. Guest bob_barron Report post Posted August 11, 2002 Verne- Preseason games are good cause families can go who may not be able to go/afford a regular season game. But there are way too many games though
Guest Rabbi_wilson13 Report post Posted August 11, 2002 I'm going to have to disagree Bob, because preseason games are still really expensive. And it's still just as hard to get tickets if you live near a big football town. (Pittsburgh, like me) NFL Preseason is completely worthless. It's not much fun to watch after the second half, and the injuries (Miller) can really hurt you. It's good for rookies and to decide your 3rd string QB, but you can't really tell how goods a team going to be since your best guys aren't playing their best guys the whole game. And you wanna talk about a bunch of crap? Miami plays on Monday and Thursday. Two games in four days! This isn't baseball, basketball or hockey, people. That right there is dumb, because fatigue leads to injuries, and by the second half of game 2 those poor bench-warmers are gonna be dropping like flies. Really, really hurting flies with cramps, sprains and torn ligaments.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted August 12, 2002 It makes money, hence its not a waste of time. End of story. Ohhh, you meant for the fans, gotcha. Can't argue with that one.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted August 12, 2002 Preseason is only good for rookies, players trying to win starting jobs or spots on the team, and incoming veterans. The only time I can think of where preseason is good is when new systems are being installed, for example Washington needs the preseason to get their offense sorted out. Other than that, it's a big waste of time. And bad things usually happen...at least one key player from each team will probably get hurt and miss time. St. Louis right now has four defensive linemen down with injury, for example. Cut it to two or three weeks at the most, five weeks is just too long for everyone involved. I wonder if in small football towns if the tickets are cheap and stuff but playing Monday and Thursday?? WTF????????
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted August 12, 2002 It's not a waste of time for the owners. To some extent it seems unfair that the rubes are charged full price. But that doesn't mean they have to put on the makeup and act like the game means something. Do you find that some people look to closely at pre-season results when judging how well a team does during the regular season. Locally the Vikings last year went undefeated and people thought they where going to be great. They were terrible, after one pre-season game against Cleveland, which they sucked. Pre-Season doesn't matter.
Guest Kingpk Report post Posted August 12, 2002 Well, Trent Dilfer's out 4-8 weeks because of a preseason game. Guess that doesn't make HIM happy about it.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted August 12, 2002 It is a rip off especially when you go to a game and first stringers play a series or two. Tickets should be dirt cheap, and first stringers should be forced to play at least a quarter. One good thing I think is a positive product of preseason is momentum. For this example we'll use the Benglas. We won Firday night. It doesn't mean anything, but we need all the wins we can get. If the Bengals lose all 4 of their preseason games there is a "here we go again" feeling. They don't need to win them all, but there needs to be some positive taken from these games. Also, we need to figure out who is going to start at QB for us.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted August 12, 2002 As a Giants fan, I found Jeremy Shockey running over the Texans a very good reason to get excited.
Guest Rabbi_wilson13 Report post Posted August 12, 2002 Pinnacle, the preseason may of been worth it just for Shockey's hit on the Texan safety and then the poor little guy's excuse in the locker room. Absolutely priceless. Yeah, look at poor Trent Dilfer, who was finally going to get the starting job he deserved all year last year, and now he's hurt. Granted, its not a season ending injury, but with the division the Seahawks are in, they need to get as many wins as they can piled up if they want a shot at the playoffs. Guest converge241 Report post Posted August 12, 2002 i think they should have 2 preseason games, thats it. Id rather see 2 more regular season games, because at least if a player gets hurt there it was in a meaningful game.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted August 12, 2002 I am a Skins fan and realize that different teams need the preseason for different reasons. When you are coming off a good/great year, you don't need to risk injury in the preseason. When you are coming off a bad year, you need to get your starters out there and have them gel, whether it is against the other teams, 12t/2nd/3rd/4th....whatever, playing time is STILL PLAYING TIME....... Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted August 12, 2002 You have to remember that the preseason is used to make cuts as well as get in-game practice. Football teams have alot of players on the roster and making cuts when you have that many players is not very easy to do.

" oh i understand, but its still not a real game. personally i think you get more of a taste when your own defense is trying to prove itself against your own offense. Obviously minor some heavier hits. Its a necessary evil I understand. I just think it could be shortened based on the fact that they know who the starters are for the most part, and then you have everybody else play in the 1.5 games after the starters get the rust out. Dont they get most of the roster cuts set before preseason games?
Guest danielisthor Report post Posted August 12, 2002 truthfully, i don't think fans should be charged for the preseason games or at least it should only be half priced. The pre-season is for the coaches to get the veterans playing time, get the Free-Agents and rookies into the system and to evaluate them and keep those that work and work on timing and other things. most of the starters don't even play a quarter of the game till the final one.
