Warcraft III

I just was wondering whether or not it would be a game that would be down my alley, or if it would even have a snowball's chance in hell of running smoothly on my machine. I really liked Starcraft, and I played the hell out of Brood Wars, but I've not really gotten a chance to play the first two Warcrafts. Are the races in Warcraft III as varied (yet well-balanced) as they were in Starcraft? How about the single-player mode? The Starcraft single-player campaign absolutely blew my mind... OK, here are my system specs, it is an old-ass computer, but it runs Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the demo of Soldier of Fortune II pretty well...

Pentium III 433

256 MB RAM

32 MB NVidia TNT 2 videocard.

Blizzard said that the required processor speed was 400 mhz, but I don't want to spend 60 dollars on a game that runs too much like ass.

I don't care so much about performance, and I don't mind putting the display settings down to the minimum. I just want a game that runs smoothly enough that it is playable.

Finally, what is your favorite race to play with? The undead clan interests me, for some reason...

Hmm, I'm running it on a P3 1.2 Ghz, with a TNT 1 video card (Diamond V550), and it's OK, though it freezes on me once in a while.

I think it will run like ass on a 433, sorry to say. I know people who have been running it on an ~800 mhz PC, and it just barely chugs along.

I'm taking a break from the game since I'm somewhat stuck in one of the single-player missions (one of those Starcraft-style "Survive for 30 minutes" scenarios, in the Undead campaign).

The single-player game is good, so far. It almost has the same epic feel as Starcraft's, and it's a LOT less tedious than Warcraft II's. To me, it's not as emotionally involving as Starcraft was (I was yelling at the screen when Kerrigan was abandoned, and later, when she was "reborn"), but it's still pretty good. Aside from the CGI movies, most of the storytelling is done through the 3D engine (it zooms in on the characters as they talk to each other, etc..). There are no "Control Room" sequences like there were in Starcraft.

The CGI cutscenes are REALLY well directed, as all Blizzard movies are.

The Undead are kinda fun. As far as resource gathering, they're kind of a cross between the Zerg and the Protoss, in that you can only build on blight (similar to the Zerg's creep) and Acolytes can do other things once they being to summon a building (like the Protoss). It's kind of odd that they collect lumber using your starting melee units though. It's like if you had to collect minerals with zerglings. I still have to get used to using my necromancers and banshees--I have a tendency to ignore my spellcasters in favor of my attack units and heroes.

I haven't tried much of the Night Elves yet, but they still seem cool. Supposedly, the game isn't well-balanced. Lots of people consider the Night Elves to be overpowered compared to say, the Humans. But Blizz will probably even things up in an eventual patch.

They also cut down a bit on some of Warcraft II's micromanagement. Some spells, like Bloodlust and Heal, can be set to autocast, so you don't have to do it yourself.

We have another thread on this, btw:

I'm in the mood to play this now. If anyone wants to do a game, let me know (just respond in this thread).

All right,

I'm going to go ahead and give it a try, I think. I've got a computer up at school next to me that will be able to run the game, so even if it plays like poo on my machine, I can still give the game a try. I got a pretty good deal on it anyways, so it's not going to crunch me in the wallet quite as badly.

Mine plays decently on a 500mhz..just chugs in loading after a few missions. That's solved by restarting and closing unnecessary programs.
